Jab Tak Hai Jaan- Movie Review

Yash Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, romance, the song ‘Saans’, Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif. So many reasons to watch Jab Tak Hai Jaan! Here’s what I thought of it.

So, Shahrukh Khan plays Major Samar who diffuses bombs for the Indian army. He meets Akira (Anushka Sharma), a journalist who falls in love with him but discovers something about his past which has made him the man he is today. His past has Meera (Katrina Kaif) who is engaged to someone else but loves Shahrukh Khan. Then a couple of accidents (literally) change things a bit. Will not say more.

If you’ve seen Yash Chopra’s movies in the past you’ll know what his love stories are all about. There’s a lot of depth and warmth in each character in the story, there’s amazing music (always) and beautiful visuals. I found most of that missing in his last movie! There’s nothing great about the story and the screenplay is just too weak which could have been saved with better editing. The visuals are beautiful ok- Ladakh and London mainly and of course our gorgeous heroines in them with all the lovely styling, clothes, make-up and hair. The thing is that they’ve tried to make it as ‘today’ as possible, so much so that Shahrukh Khan probably has kissing scenes for the first time ever but the ‘YC’ (Yash Chopra) factor is somehow missing. The first half was extremely slow and boring. I would have really liked the film if it was just the second half.

Coming to the performances… Shahrukh Khan knows all the passionate love wala looks by heart now and he does  them well even with the new heroines even if they lack chemistry or look like his daughters. Luckily, he didn’t overact this time. I like his rugged man look when he’s in the army. Otherwise he looks like a wanna-be with gel in his hair trying to look young. The dance sequence with Katrina in ‘Ishq Shava’ doesn’t suit him at all! Katrina Kaif has done a decent job and you can’t take your eyes off her when she’s on screen. Anushka Sharma I love! I think she’s a natural actor, looks great and she was perfect for the role with all that energy and that contagious smile.

AR Rahman is losing the magical touch he has with music. You wont believe ‘Challa’ by Rabbi is his composition. It’s so bad! I love the song ‘Saans’ though sung by my favourite female singer- Shreya Ghoshal. Ishq Shava and Heer are both nice. Jiya re is fun only while watching the movie.

So, I feel bad but I expected much more from Yash Chopra’s last movie which was not that bad but could have been so much better! This is probably Shahrukh Khan’s low phase but I do hope he bounces back with a better film soon.

Ishaqzaade- Movie Review

I’d only seen the ‘Pareshan’ song and Parineeti Chopra’s superb performance in ‘Ladies vs Ricky Behl’ before the release of ‘Ishaqzaade’. I didn’t have any idea what the movie was about but it had a very raw feel to it which didn’t look very appealing to be honest.  Now that I went to watch it, here’s my review of it.

Story in short? Parma (Hindu boy) and Zoya (Muslim girl) belong to a small town called Almor where everyone has guns and politics plays a huge role. Both their fathers are politicians and hate each other and so by default, so do Parma and Zoya. In a turn of events, they get married and then things get pretty messed up for them.

To start with, the performances were superb! Parineeti Chopra is a supremely talented actress, very natural and full of life. I loved her in the movie and she totally stole the show! Arjun Kapoor is good too and has a very raw look which is appealing somehow. Together they have great chemistry that makes every scene with them a treat to watch.

Except for the first half an hour when I was wondering why I went for the movie, I was gripped throughout. But then it only got better. In fact, it picked up pace just a little before the interval. Other than that, superb direction, editing and dialogues, realistic setting, costumes and make-up, outstanding performances by both Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor and average music by Amit Trivedi.

To me, it was like another Romeo & Juliet, with quite a bit of violence but charming in its own way. I really liked it and totally recommend it!

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl- Movie Review

I’ve loved Anushka Sharma since her first film and liked Ranveer Singh in his but I absolutely loved them together in Band Baaja Baaraat and couldn’t wait to watch Ladies vs Ricky Bahl for the same reason. Was the movie any good though? You’re just about to find out!

Ricky Bahl (Ranveer Singh) is a conman who’s conned more than 30 rich beautiful girls for money. He changes his look and city to avoid getting caught. Out of the 30 dumb girls, there’s one smart girl who gets hold of two others and they pull in (Ishika) Anushka Sharma, who’s a brilliant salesgirl to con the charmer. The rest of the story is predictable so I wont say anymore.

If you’re a girl who’s filmy, romantic and loves Bollywood, here’s a movie you just can’t miss! The story is simple but the treatment is great! Superb screenplay, brilliant cinematography and colours (Yashraj never goes wrong with that ever!), lovely sets, make-up and costumes, realistic dialogues and acting, ok music and superb direction. There aren’t too many faults I could find in this film to be honest. It was just pure entertainment and fun throughout.

Ranveer Singh in this movie is just fantastic! He not only looks good but also acts well and I love the way he says ‘I love you’! I just melted when he said it! 😛 Anushka Sharma is gorgeous! She has amazing screen presence and anything she wears looks as if it’s just made for her. She’s a natural actor and I love the way she delivers her dialogues. All the supporting actors are also very good but I’ll specially mention the girl who plays ‘Dimple’. She’s got the best lines and was just perfect for the role with superb comic timing! She definitely deserves an award for the best supporting actress!

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl might not appeal to a lot of guys but most girls will love it even though it is predictable. It’s a fun film and I think you should watch it!

Lafangey Parindey- Movie Review

I don’t understand why this movie needed to be called ‘Lafangey Parindey’! Is Yash Raj trying to go the Vishal Bhardwaj way? If yes, this movie is so not the type!

From the promos we understand that Neil Nitin Mukesh (NNM) is a fighter and Deepika Padukone (DP) is blind and she skates. Theek hai.  When you watch the movie, you’ll see that DP can actually see. Then there’s this “suspense” reason why she loses her eyesight. Now this suspense reason is not highlighted well. I guessed it from the beginning only. I’m not going to tell you the story or it will spoil a suspense you might not guess!

Neil Nitin Mukesh & Deepika Padukone in a film together is a big no-no! There is no chemistry at all! In fact, the kiss at the end was not even necessary. It didn’t show any chemistry either! DP is too stiff and even though she repeats her clothes so many times, her Reebok shoes do not make her appear poor at any cost! NNM is average as an actor and doesn’t look anything like a “Bambaiya” who stays in a chawl-ish area. I was reminded of the movie Rangeela where Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar share that kind of relationship as friends. But in this movie, it just looks completely fake! Story as I said lacked masala… it was bland. With whatever the director got, he’s directed it in a way that you can’t hate the movie completely.

The music is ok but the songs ‘Dhatad Dhatad’ and ‘Main lafanga’ stand out. They’re quite nice.

Overall, Lafangey Parindey for me was very ok. Lacked the spark!
