Hate Story 2- Movie Review

Roochster

I can easily say that Hate Story 2 is the twisted- corny- and- B grade- female version of Ghajini and it’s not worth your time.

Horror Story- Movie Review

Roochster

horror-story-2013-posterAmeesha Patel probably left Vikram Bhatt because he makes spooky films. Horror Story is a bad title for a film that is surprisingly not that bad. Here’s more.

So, a bunch of friends after being quite drunk at a nightclub that’s almost emptied out, watch the news that’s playing on Tv. They see that a person committed suicide from a haunted hotel that’s supposed to be shut down because of the numerous deaths that have occurred there, especially from room no. 3046. To find out what the big deal is, they decide to go there themselves acting fearless and completely immature.  They finally realise how dumb they were when one by one each friend start dying. Duh!

Director Ayush Raina has made the story work to an extent that it actually does. In the beginning you would find the actors looking very lame and you would expect a ridiculously bad film. But it only gets better. Surprise surprise! I guess it’s the Vikram Bhatt effect. Somehow, his horror films are always scary even though the ghosts in them look like ugly clowns with badly done make up. The entire concept- of a haunted hotel works. The hotel actually looks spooky and when you imagine yourself in that situation, you would get petrified because of how the story is told. A huge amount of credit goes to the cinematographer Gargey Trivedi who’s done a brilliant job with his camera and lights and the Art director who’s made the hotel look so haunted. There are of course some very dumb scenes in the film and clichés but it’s not easy to make a horror film, especially the type where you’re genuinely scared like I was in this one.

The background score by Amar Mohile is not as overdone as in Ram Gopal Verma’s films. It’s just right and creates the right atmosphere for the film. Luckily there’s no music in the film to slow down the momentum of the film.

All the actors are relatively new and look odd in the start but start getting better as the movie progresses. Karan Kundra and Nishant Malkani stand out from the male lead actors. Among the actresses I thought Aparnaa Bajpai was good. The rest of them are alright and deliver fair performances.

To be honest, I didn’t think Horror Story was bad at all. I was freaked out and scared to be alone for a long time (and this has everything to do with the movie). If you’re a horror movie fan, go watch this!

Ankur Arora Murder Case- Movie Review

Roochster

Ankur Arora Murder Case posterTo be honest, I didn’t expect much from this film except for the fact that it is based on a real life incident. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw it though. Read why.

Dr. Romesh (Arjun Mathur) worked under Dr. Asthana (Kay Kay Menon) at a hospital he was interning at. He had a live-in relationship with Dr. Riya (Vishakha Singh), his co-intern and girlfriend. However, when an 8-year-old boy Ankur Arora (Vishesh Tiwari) dies because of a silly medical mistake by Dr. Asthana, Romesh stands up to fight for justice along with Ankur’s mother Nandita (Tisca Chopra).

The story is written by Vikram Bhatt, who is known to make good thrillers. Although this film is based on a real life incident, the screenplay is well written, especially for the second half. The momentum slowly builds up making it more interesting to watch. Director Suhail Tatari has executed the story well with characters that are well written. There are a few filmy things in the film that might be a put off but the message is the main thing and that is conveyed appropriately. The camera work is good and there are some beautifully shot scenes in the house of Romesh and Riya. Luckily there’s just one prominent song in the film which is melodious and goes well with the theme. The background score enhances the flow of the film.

We have all seen Tisca Chopra as a mother before in Taare Zameen Par and we know how perfectly she fits into the skin of her character. Her acting in this film is also excellent! She’s not melodramatic or over-the-top. Just right. Arjun Mathur as Dr. Romesh is a bit dull in the start but gets better through the course of the film and does his role well. Kay Kay Menon as we know is a great actor and he proves that in this film too with his egoistic, grey character that you will love to hate. Vishesh Tiwari as Ankur is ok. I would have liked to feel more for him or when he died but sadly didn’t. I can’t blame him though because he’s still a child and not every child can act well. Vishakha Singh as Dr. Riya and Romesh’s girlfriend is alright. She’s not too good with doing emotional scenes. Her chemistry with Arjun Mathur didn’t show at all in spite of there being a couple of intimate scenes. Pauli Dam I have seen in a sleazy film again by the Bhatt camp and she was not bad then. She’s a decent actor and as a lawyer in this film too she’s convincing. She reminds me a lot of Mugdha Godse but acts better!

Ankur Arora Murder Case might not have got the right amount of publicity or promotion but as a film it is worth watching. I wouldn’t call it ‘entertaining’ but it is engaging and made with good intentions.

1920 Evil Returns- Movie Review

Roochster

A movie with a weak script and out of work actors based in the 1920s where the pretty ghost with red eyes vomits on people instead of scaring them.

Raaz 3 (3D) – Movie Review

Roochster

Raaz 1 was epic, Raaz 2 was ok and s Raaz 3 was ummm… you’ll find out soon. Read on.

So, Bipasha Basu plays this insecure actress who can’t imagine being anything but the best. When Esha Gupta wins the best actress award, Bips can’t take it and so goes to this creepy man from hell whose aatma bhatkos in India and he can help Bips make Esha suffer. By suffering I mean scary things. And yes, Emraan Hashmi is a lallu director who helps Bips (his girlfriend who treats him like shit) make Esha suffer.

First of all, I was totally freaked out! This is probably the scariest movie I’ve seen in the past one year.  Raaz 1 might have had just one or two scary scenes, but Raaz 3 was full of them! The broad story was good but the screenplay and direction was as shaky as watching a 3D movie without the 3d glasses. Some of the 3D effects were good but otherwise it was just a gimmick to draw audiences, especially to a paid preview show (which I went for). The ghosts’ make up was like ulti with worms even though the sound effects were very good. The set design was very good though. There was this one scene to wards the end where the bad ‘aatma’ tells Bipasha that if she wants to kill Esha, “Tumhe mere saath woh sab karna padega jo ek zinda aurat ek zinda aadmi ke saath karti hai”. And he’s got all these worms all over his body and flies and mosquitoes over his head. So yeah, it was pretty gross and pointless also.

Coming to the performances, Emraan Hashmi as the hero was good. Bipasha Basu also acted well but looked quite old even with all the skin show. Esha Gupta looked gorgeous but was alright. She can’t dance, that’s for sure!

The music is not that great. There’s just one song I liked- Deewana kar raha hai by Javed Ali which is quite melodious.

Jo bhi ho, for me Raaz 3 might not be the best horror movie to watch but it served its purpose. I was bloody petrified and it was entertaining to an extent. If you’re a horror movie fan and like Bollywood’s corniness, go watch Raaz 3.

Dangerous Ishhq- Movie Review

Roochster

An idea of the 90s, with an actress of the 90s clearly doesn’t work in 2012 even if it’s in 3D, especially if the movie is called ‘Dangerous Ishhq’ with reincarnation as the main subject and music by Himesh Reshammiya.

Haunted 3D- Movie Review

Roochster

I wasn’t intending to watch this movie at all but what do you know! I was passing through Eros theatre and randomly decided that I had to watch it! And that’s how I ended up watching Haunted (3D) starring Mimoh, now known as Mahakshay and Twinkle now known as Tia Bajpai.

Vikram Bhatt’s Haunted is the story of Rehan (Mahakshay) who goes to Ooty so sell a house. While he’s staying there he comes across strange sounds which lead to a picture of a lady called Meera. A few days go by and he starts hearing screaming sounds and realizes that there’s a story he needs to get to the bottom of and free the girl.

What did I think of the movie? I thought it was not bad at all! Serious! The cinematography, background music, the story, Mahakshay all kept me hooked on. Somehow, even though they’ve put weird make up to make the ghosts look scary, put songs which are absolutely unnecessary, made Mimoh fly and do stunts that looked hilarious, the movie is really entertaining. In parts it does seem long, especially at the end, but it didn’t get boring at all.

The actress needs acting classes. She just kept yelling “Leave me, leave me” in her screechy voice and even though she has a pretty face, she couldn’t do justice to her role. Mahakshay on the other hand was a surprise factor! I’d seen him in Jimmy and laughed my ass off but in Haunted, Icouldn’t help but take him seriously. He’s done a good job, has lost a lot of weight and cut his hair so he looks also much more presentable. Achint Kaur who becomes a ghost later, fits the role completely. Her voice and make up with white lenses suit her character also.

Overall, I quite enjoyed watching Haunted 3D. I got scared in many scenes and even jumped up and yelled with fright which means it served its purpose. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea to watch an Indian Horror film, but if you love horror movies and Vikram Bhatt’s movies, do not miss this one!
