Wazir- Movie Review

Roochster

wazir movie posterWhat happens when you put Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar together? Either they both sing in their unconventional- singer voices or both completely engross you with their acting skills and take you with them on an interesting journey. I feel lucky to have experienced both in the film Wazir. Here’s my review.

Plot in short– Danish (Farhan Akhtar), an ATS officer loses his four year old daughter Noorie while trying to fight a terrorist. This makes him so angry and driven that he single handedly kills the terrorist in a shoot out. This step makes him lose his job and he is suspended. A chance meeting with a physically challenged, retired chess champion Omkarnath Dhar (Amitabh Bachchan) makes him realize that there’s a politician involved in terrorist activities and he must be finished.

The Good– Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi are the true heroes here. They’ve written a top notch screenplay that works well in director Bejoy Nambiar’s favour.  Fast paced and thrilling, Wazir will not bore you one bit in spite of the underlying sadness in the characters that is with you throughout. Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar play a huge role in accomplishing that. Aditi Rao Hydari, despite her small role shines through. Neil Nitin Mukesh is getting better and more convincing with every film as the bad guy. The music in the film is nice and hummable. I came back home to listen to ‘Tere bin’ by Shantanu Moitra, sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal in their soulful voices.

The Not-so-Good– The chess bit might just be overdone a bit more than my liking. Apart from that, there’s not much that I think was not that good except for maybe that the second half of the film is slightly slow compared to the first half.

Verdict– Wazir is a good thriller that has some incredible performances. Go watch!

Vidya Balan chose a great film once again with a highly engaging screenplay but it could have had a better climax and better editing.

Ek Villain- Movie Review

Roochster

ek-villain-movie-posterFrom the looks of it, Ek Villain looked like a must watch film, especially because it seemed like a good ‘thriller’. How thrilling was it? You’re just about to find out.

Plot in short– Guru (Siddharth Malhotra), a gangster because of circumstances and Aisha (Shraddha Kapoor) fall in love and are married. The love story loses balance when a psychopath serial killer (Riteish Deshmukh) kills Aisha. When his lover becomes the latest victim of the serial killer, Guru blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge.

The Good– Riteish Deshmukh takes the cake for performing like a star. He is very talented and should definitely be seen in more films. Siddharth Malhotra is a complete hotty and I have a huge crush on him. Haha! Besides the looks part, he’s acted well too. I like that he’s not too filmy or melodramatic. He’s got the potential to do some serious shit. Shraddha Kapoor has acted better than what she did in Aashiqui 2 so yeah that’s a good thing too. Aamna Shariff too played the wife effortlessly. Now, the story didn’t appeal to me much but if you watch the film you can get two different stories which would have worked better than this. I think if just Riteish’s story was taken along with Aamna Shariff and the various other characters, it would make for a better watch. The styling and make up is top notch. The cinematography is lovely in parts and average in some. The music is soothing to the ears. I like the song ‘Teri galliyan’ a lot.

The Not-so-Good– The screenplay and dialogues are a bit messed up. The direction contributes to it. Some scenes are super corny like the part when the nurse checks Riteish Deshmukh’s pulse, declares him dead and when an injection is stabbed into his heart, he wakes up with a jolt. Quite stupid eh? Yeah, many more such stupid scenes in the movie to laugh at. Kamaal R. Khan was very annoying as expected. I also felt that the editing could have been crisper.

Verdict– Corny and barely thrilling, Ek Villain works because of the performances, especially by Riteish Deshmukh.

The Xposé- Movie Review

Roochster

The Xpose posterAsk anyone to join you for a Himesh Reshammiya movie and you know their response already! Well, as expected, I went to watch ‘The Xposé’ alone. Let’s get down to the review.

Plot in short– Based in the 1960s, The Xposé tells the story of a mysterious murder of a starlet (Sonali Raut) that takes place at a grand Bollywood after-party. There are several suspects out of whom there’s an upcoming star heroine (Zoya Afroz), a South Indian superstar (Himesh Reshammiya), a director (Ananth Mahadevan) and a Star music composer (Yo Yo Honey Singh). Who could it be?

The Good– I have seen all of Himesh’s movies in the past and trust me when I say that this one is undoubtedly the best. The film is a murder mystery and has a well written screenplay, with some glitches here and there, of course, but at least it’s entertaining. I did not find myself getting bored at all. The background score is brilliant and has that thriller feel to it. The music by Himesh Reshammiya is not bad. I like the finale song- ‘Icecream khaungi’ in spite of the lame lyrics. It will remind you of RD Burman’s style of music. I also liked the songs ‘Dard dilo ke’, Surrroor’, which I felt would have sounded better if someone apart from Himesh sang it. The song ‘Sheeshe ka samundar’ sung by Ankit Tiwari is beautiful!  When it comes to the look of the film, I wouldn’t say it takes you back to the 60s, but it’s tastefully done and none of the actors look badly styled. The art direction and cinematography go hand in hand and it all comes out beautifully on screen. About the performances, I’d say that I’m surprised how hard Himesh Reshammiya has worked on his look and his overall screen presence. He’s done a decent acting job too. The debutant actresses Zoya Afroz and Sonali Raut are very good too. They look lovely and are casted well. Ananth Mahadevan, Irrfan Khan and Yo Yo Honey Singh play a great supporting cast.  So looking at all of it put together, I’d say Ananth Mahadevan has directed it really well.

The Not- so-good– So as far as the not-s-good aspects of the film are concerned, I can easily say that the length is one of them. It’s only a film of two hours but you’d feel you’ve been there longer than that. It could have been edited better and the length of songs played could have been shorter. Also, a few things you will find extremely silly. Like Himesh holding an unlit cigarette throughout and the lame reason behind it and some corny dialogues. Apart from that, there’s not much I didn’t like.

Verdict– Go for it or watch it at home with an open mind. It’s really not as bad as you think. Give ‘The Xposé’ a chance.

Final Destination 5- Movie Review

Roochster

I’ve enjoyed watching all the parts of Final Destination and was eagerly waiting to watch this one. How fun was it?

If you’ve followed the movies, they’re all about how a bunch of people survive a freak accident because one guy has a premonition about the forthcoming events and because they survive, they’re haunted by death and must die one by one.

I thought Final Destination 5 started off a little differently… the first 5 minutes were boring. But then it got better and gripping. The excitement builds up and the deaths, no matter how gruesome, freaky and stupid are fun to watch!

It’s one of those movies you can’t get bored watching. Full on entertainment! The acting is good and so is the camera work. The editing however is a little careless in parts; for instance the part at the spa when the fire is about to reach the guy.

Overall, Final Destination 5 is full on time pass and watchable atleast once. I toh enjoyed it!

Knock Out- Movie Review

Roochster

I wasn’t too keen on watching Knock Out but since @BeingSalmanKhan said that the movie is good, I thought, “Ab toh movie dekhna banta hai boss!”

A lot of people would think it’s a copy of  the movie ‘Phone Booth’ but it’s not. Yes, 90% of the movie takes place in a phone booth but the story is very Indian. I wont say much…Just that it reminded me of the movie ‘A Wenesday’.

Sanjay Dutt and Irrfan Khan play the lead roles in the movie and we all know that they both are great actors. They’ve done a great job, especially, Sanjay Dutt. Irrfan Khan looks horrible in his really bad hairstyle! Kangana Ranaut, who I call a pigeon, plays a reporter. She looks really nice but her voice is super annoying and someone needs to teach her how to act!

The movie moves at a good pace and you wont find yourself getting bored which is a good thing, more so because there are no songs. But there are some unnecessary scenes which they could have cut out. The good thing is that there are a few messages that make you a little more aware as an Indian and also feel slightly more patriotic after watching this movie.

Overall, Knock Out wont really knock you out but it is a decent attempt at delivering some important messages to the people of India and its decently entertaining.
