Shuddh Desi Romance- Movie Review

Roochster

shuddh-desi-romance-2013-movie-posterSo, Shuddh Desi Romance probably wasn’t exactly ‘shuddh’. Now, was it worth it is the question. You’ll get your answer soon. Read on.

A shy young boy Raghuram (Sushant Singh Rajput) jumps into the decision of his life- marriage, only to be the ‘Runaway Bridegroom’. Reason? On his way to the wedding, he meets Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra) who’s got that something to make his heart beat faster. A couple of weeks later they meet again only to realise that they’re attracted to each other and there’s there’s an unsaid chemistry between them.  So on a drunken night they decide to marry. Now this time, Gayatri’s got the wedding butterflies and she runs away. A few days later Raghu meets the girl he was to marry first (Vaani Kapoor) and decides to give their incomplete story a second chance.

Here’s a story that talks about how scary a marriage can be. To be in the spotlight, be judged, greet and meet hundreds of people you’ve not met before, being with someone you barely know, the scary word ‘commitment’ are all reasons to make you run away. This feeling is so common with us today that the concept makes complete sense. Director Maneesh Sharma has beautifully told us the story that is not only fun to watch but also seems so real. In many ways it reminded me of Band Baaja Baaraat and yet this one is entirely different. The story by Jaideep Sahni is very well written, sometimes getting a little repetitive but still very enjoyable and different. I wish it was edited better in the second half though. There are some really simple and subtle moments even in the loudness that make the film so endearing.

Being a Yashraj film there are gorgeous colours captured very well with cinematographer Manu Anand’s lens and Rashmi Sethi’s skillful art direction. The costumes and sets are very today and suit the characters. The music by Sachin-Jigar is not bad at all. I love the songs ‘Tere mere beech mein’ and ‘Gulabi’. Great background score too.

I’d like to specifically mention the casting director for this film. Shanoo Sharma has perfectly cast all the characters. Parineeti Chopra is full of life and adds so much by just being there. She’s a natural and has no pretence or ‘typical heroine nakhras’. Co-actor Sushant Singh Rajput who reminds me of Ranveer Singh in this film is fantastic! I loved him in Kai Po Che and he’s too good in Shuddh Desi Romance too. There’s great chemistry between them. Newcomer Vaani Kapoor is unconventional in her own way and yet likable. In fact, all three characters have this effortless chemistry throughout the film. Rishi Kapoor is entertaining as usual and delivers a good performance.

Shuddh Desi Romance is a fresh film. It’s fun, different and crazy in its own way. Watch it for the quirky screenplay, natural and effortless performances and because it’s totally relatable with the youth of today.

Kai Po Che- Movie Review

Roochster

kai_po_che posterEver since I saw the trailer of the film, I knew I had to see it; and I did. Here’s my review.

The story of the film revolves around 3 friends, their struggle to do something out of nothing and achieve success. In the process, they live, learn and lose more than they wish for. The backdrop is of a troubled Gujarat with communal biases, conservative thinking but also filled with lovely colours, beautiful people and warmth.

Abhishek Kapoor is one of those directors who makes movies that are from the heart. I haven’t read Chetan Bhagat’s novel- ‘The 3 mistakes of my life’ on which this movie is based but after watching it, I do want to read the book. The characters are all well written. The cinematography is beautiful. I only wish the theatre I went to had better speakers to hear the dialogues properly. There’s subtle humour that adds charm to the film. The styling is just right.

I’ve seen Sushant Singh Rajput for the first time and I must say the guy has talent. He’s good looking, acts very well and is very likable. Amit Sadh I have seen in some serial before and he’s grown so much as an actor. He’s not likable but lovable. I’ve fallen in love with his smile. There’s something about him that makes him endearing and he expresses without saying anything which is an amazing quality to have as an actor. Raj Kumar Yadav who plays an innocent and simple character is effortlessly cute. He’s played his part very well. The actress Amrita Puri who was very ok in ‘Aisha’ is great in Kai Po Che. She’s pretty and a natural actor.

The music in the film is lovely. Amit Trivedi is one of the finest music composers we have today and his music is fantastic! I love the songs ‘Meethi boliyan’ and ‘Shubhaarambh’.

Watch Kai Po Che for its cultural richness and beautiful performances.
