Welcome Back- Movie Review

Roochster

Ridiculously corny, not funny, not entertaining and not worth your time or money in spite of the huge star cast, production costs involved and the so called legacy of ‘Welcome’.

D-Day- Movie Review

Roochster

D-Day posterI saw D-Day and Ramaiya Vastavaiya on the same day. Guess which one was better! Guess! Don’t worry! You’ll get you answer soon enough.

Rishi Kapoor (Iqbal Seth) as we’ve seen in the trailers plays a terrorist/don staying in Karachi. 4 Raw agents- Wali (Irrfan Khan), Zoya (Huma Qureshi), Rudra (Arjun Rampal) and Aslam (Aakash Dahiya) are sent on a mission to bring Iqbal Seth to India to face justice.

Nikhil Advani who’s first directorial venture was ‘Kal ho naa ho’ has come a long way and not in a good way. D-Day might sound and look really interesting but it lacks what makes a good film- a well written story. The screenplay is so badly written that I was yawning through most parts of the movie. No dialogue made an impact even though there are a couple of them that were meant to. Apart from the last 15 minutes or so, the entire movie was a bore! I didn’t understand why the love stories were given so much importance. 3 songs are wasted on Arjun Rampal and Shruti Haasan out of which one made sense. The way that entire song ‘Alvida’ is shot is beautiful. The cinematography otherwise by Tushar Kanti Ray is nice.

The art direction and visuals on screen are realistic. There are a lot of action scenes but none too gripping. The styling of the actors is alright. The music by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy is ok except for the song ‘Alvida’. The background score could have been better to give the film a bit more character.

Irrfan Khan and Arjun Rampal are the pillars of the film. Arjun Rampal especially is only improving with every film. Huma Qureshi is a good actor and has done a decent job in this film. Aakash Dahiya as Aslam is very good. Rishi Kapoor is a brilliant actor but I think his role in D-Day doesn’t do much for him. With barely any scenes and dialogues, Rishi Kapoor’s role is more like a long cameo. Shruti Haasan is good in some scenes and not so good in some but she looks lovely. Nasser (who plays the RAW chief) is a superb actor and could have had more to do in the film.

So, D-Day might have looked promising in the promos but as a film it lacks a lot apart from the performances which are top notch. I would not recommend it.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya- Movie Review

Roochster

Ramaiya Vastavaiya posterThe song ‘Jeene laga hoon’ by Atif Aslam from the film had been stuck in my head for a long time because it had been playing everywhere. Is the movie better than the song? You’re just about to find out.

Ram (Girish Taurani) and Sona (Shruti Haasan) fall in love at a friend’s wedding. They both belong to different backgrounds- Ram from Australia and Sona from a small village in India. Everything’s going well until Ram’s parents (Randhir Kapoor & Poonam Dhillon) and Sona’s brother Raghuvir (Sonu Sood) become barriers in their relationship.

Director Prabhudeva’s third Bollywood film Ramaiya Vastavaiya was made with the clear intention of launching producer Kumar Taurani’s son Girish Kumar. The story has nothing to boast about because it’s been “inspired” by a couple of films we’ve seen in the past. Examples: Pyaar Kiya to darna kya and Maine Pyar Kiya. A story that’s super predictable with some very corny scenes and dialogues are probably not meant for the audience of today. But some of the scenes are quite funny, especially in the second half so screenplay & dialogue writer Shiraz Ahmed has done an ok job. What is amazing is the cinematography by Kiran Deohans. Beautiful and captivating. The styling of Shruti Haasan is bang on! She looks like a girl brought up in a small village wearing all her salwar suits and black bindi on her forehead. Girish Kumar’s styling is too wanna-be-ish. For instance, at a wedding function, he’s wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. The locations and art direction is superb!

The music by Sachin and Jigar is decent. The songs ‘Jeene laga hoon’ and ‘Rang jo lagyo’ are great compositions and sung very well. ‘Jhaadoo ki jhappi’ might be popular but as a song could have been better. The choreography is good.

Girish Kumar might think he’s a stud but he’s in for a surprise. He clearly is not a stud and neither does he fit the bill of an actor. He overacts and would looks more like a villain than a hero. Shruti Haasan looks gorgeous in simple clothes with barely any make up and lovely looking hair. She’s acted ok but is a bit off in some parts. The movie works because of the supporting cast who are very good. Sonu Sood, Vinod Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Satish Shah and Pankhuri Awasthi to name a few.

Ramaiya Vastavaiya tries too hard to be a simple and sweet love story but is not a movie you should go to watch at a theatre. Average.

Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji- Movie Review

Roochster

To be honest, I didn’t expect much from this movie. The trailer, which I had seen just once, was quite sad; so the only reason I went for it was Madhur Bhandarkar. I really like his kind of movies. Errr this one…was different.

The story- 3 house mates-Ajay Devgan (the divorced simple man), Emraan Hashmi (the player) and Omi Vaidya (the bhola guy who works at a matrimonial site but is a poet at heart) meet women of different ages and backgrounds and fall in love with them. Unfortunately, things don’t quite happen as planned. Bas I’m not saying more! It’s quite stupid anyway and I’m also feeling lazy to type.

Where do I start from…so many things about the movie sucked!  The ‘Chatur’ we all loved in 3 Idiots was just not convincing enough as the character he played in this movie. All the actresses were bad except for Tisca Chopra who looked lovely and acted ok! Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi were very ok. The music by Pritam wasn’t that good in spite of Emraan Hashmi being a part of the movie. Madhur Bhandarkar’s direction unfortunately seems directionless. Apart from a few scenes which cracked me up, there wasn’t much to get entertained with.

So, yeah the movie is quite bad. But not as bad as Yamla Pagla Deewana!
