Dolly Ki Doli- Movie Review

Roochster

Dolly ki Doli movie posterI never really looked at Sonam Kapoor as a good actress especially after seeing all her previous films. Dolly Ki Doli, however was something else. I can say I really enjoyed myself throughout the length of the film. Here’s my review.

Plot in short– Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) is a runaway bride. She and her fake family get her married, steal money and jewellery on the first night of her wedding from the house and run away leaving the dulha and his family in shock and embarrassment. Will Dolly ever be caught? Does she not want to really settle down?

The Good– I have to say that this film is a joy ride. It is 1 hour 40 minutes of drama and fun. Abhishek Dogra, the director has done a brilliant job in making a film that has no dull moments at all. The screenplay has the biggest role in this. It is fast paced and well written. Every actor has performed to the best of their ability. Sonam Kapoor has shown signs of improvement and her accent is less snobbish. Her make up and hair has also drastically improved as compared to the rest of her films. Rajkummar Rao delivers a realistic performance. I remember seeing Varun Sharma in Fukrey and thought he was superb! Well, I repeat. He is superb! Bang on comic timing, natural and a lot of fun to watch on screen. I don’t think anyone could have done this role better than him. For me, he stole the show in Dolly ki Doli and I would want to watch the film again mostly because of him. The other supporting actors- Archana Puran Singh, Manoj Joshi, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and the others also make the film a treat to watch. Pulkit Samrat looks like a cake but unfortunately didn’t have much acting scope. He was way better in Fukrey. The old actress who plays the fake dadi was also given equal importance with just one dialogue in the film- “Beti de di, sab kuchh de diya.” That was a real LOL scene.

The Not-so-good– While there are so many good things about the film, I can barely point out the bad because I enjoyed the film so much. So Pulkit Samrat is an absolute hotty, he doesn’t do justice to the role. Also, I felt that the climax of the film was a tad bit disappointing. It just didn’t strike a chord. The music too is below the mark.

Verdict– Overall, Dolly Ki Doli is a fun film that deserves a watch. Jaake dekho!

This is by far Sajid Khan’s worst film as a director because not just the screenplay but even the acting, dialogues, story and direction but on the whole the movie is nothing but a disaster so please avoid watching it!

Bullett Raja- Movie Review

Roochster

Bullett-Raja posterBullett Raja did not look exciting to me when I saw the trailer and as a movie too, it barely entertained. For some reason, Saif Ali Khan to star in a film like this just does not make sense to me. Also, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s style of film making may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Saheb Biwi aur Gangster and its sequel and  Paan Singh Tomar may have worked but Bullett Raja clearly doesn’t. Here’s why.

What’s the story like? Well, let me try this. Raja (Saif Ali Khan) and Rudra (Jimmy Shergill) turn into gangster best friends in Uttar Pradesh and get into a political trap. Then it’s all about a power struggle, hidden ambitions and revenge. In the middle of it all, Raja finds love in Mitali (Sonakshi Sinha) who encourages him to fight what he’s fighting.

I can’t begin to tell you how bored I was while watching the film. Even the people in the theatre were watching it quietly. Not a sound, not a ‘taali’ from anyone especially when you expect it for a movie with a theme like this. The screenplay and dialogues do not do justice to the story which itself is nothing great. Tigmanshu Dhulia is a skilled director who does his best at directing but doesn’t succeed much because of the weak script. There isn’t much to boast about. The styling is ok. Saif Ali Khan looks too wanna-be-ish with the tikka and bad hair.

The cinematography by P.S. Vinod is good. The action scenes look alright. The background score by Sajid-Wajid is very effective while the music is really bad. I can’t name even one song that I liked.

Saif Ali Khan as Bullett Raja is not convincing at all in terms of his look or the way he acts. In fact, Jimmy Shergill who plays the second lead is better and more realistic. Jimmy Shergill’s role is better too. Saif just looks stupid prancing around like a wanna-be Gunda. Sonakshi Sinha looks beautiful even though her role is pointless as are most characters in the film. There’s no scope for her to show her acting skills. Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover and Ravi Kissen who are actors of high caliber are reduced to doing roles that barely count. Vidyut Jamwal who was last seen in Commando is not bad at all. As a cop, he does justice and also looks the part. Unfortunately he had a very short role in Bullett Raja. Chunky Pandey too is barely there (Thank God!)

So, yes Bullett Raja is not my idea of a good film and is not entertaining at all. Go ahead and miss it.

Go Goa Gone- Movie Review

Roochster

Go Goa Gone posterI wasn’t expecting much from this Bollywoodified zombie film, especially with Kunal Khemu in it. But… what a pleasant surprise!

3 friends- Hardik (Kunal Khemu), Luv (Vir Das) and Bunny (Anand Tiwari) who work and stay together don’t have anything exciting happening in their lives. Hardik and Luv spend their time smoking up, drinking and trying their luck with women but nothing seems to work. Work comes up for Bunny in Goa and his friends seize the opportunity and tag along with him. On reaching there, they meet Luna (Puja Gupta) who is Luv’s Facebook friend. She tells them about this ‘Rave’ party happening on an island and they decide to go. All’s not well when they realise the next morning that everyone on the island has turned into zombies. That’s when they meet wanna-be Russian mafia Boris (Saif Ali Khan).

Those of you who have seen the Hollywood flick Zombieland should not expect this to be like it. Sure, the genre is the same but as a movie this one should be judged by itself and not be compared. The directors Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK have done a good job in making a film that is not only entertaining but also well conceptualized. We’ve had enough of those gross looking ghosts in our scary movies! They’re more apt in ‘Go Goa Gone’ to be honest. Atleast you laugh at them because you’re meant to!

The story and screenplay go hand in hand and with a simple premise like in this, the dialogues and expressions work the most. They are very today. Fresh, witty and natural. Good work, writers! I read Kunal Khemu is one of them too! I wish the background music was more pumped up though, like a more punk rock sort of beat going on in the background to pace up the film a bit. The cinematography is good but I expected more from a picturesque place like Goa. I liked how the blood squirted out from the zombies though. That was kind of cool! The music by Sachin-Jigar is different but goes well with the film and all that’s happening in it.

The actors suit the characters well and do justice to their parts. Kunal Khemu as I said, really surprised me. He is good and the most entertaining actor in the movie. Vir Das again is a natural and is a lot of fun to watch. He’s a good looking guy. Saif Ali Khan’s character is fun in the start but gets a bit off later. The way he introduces himself first with his accent I thought, ok this will be interesting and is different from what he’s ever done but he’s just got a long cameo in the film which barely counts as the main hero. Anand Tiwari is a good actor and played the part of a naiive friend very well. He is fun to watch too. Puja Gupta was very ok and didn’t quite fit in with the cast. Honestly, she was not the best choice for the part.

Fun, entertaining and twisted, this film appeals the most to the youth. Go Goa Gone will make you laugh out loud. Go watch it with a bunch of friends!

Race 2- Movie Review

Roochster

Race 2 posterRace came years ago and everyone enjoyed it. Was Race 2 as good? You’re just about to find out.

So, Saif Ali Khan is back in another race for money and love and this time he’s got new competition. Deepika Padokone, Jacqueline Fernandes and John Abraham. They decided not to include Bipasha Basu in this one because Abbas Mustan wanted to cast Johnny boy. Anil Kapoor and his dumb assistant Ameesha Patel are also there to make the film lighter with their double meaning pjs.

The director duo Abbas Mustan is slowly losing it. With the attempt of making it filled with twists and turns, the movie only gets longer and a little pakao. Sure, the film is well styled in all respects and has the shine of a freshly cut diamond but the story and sense the film should have lacks a bit. It clearly isn’t as good as Race.

The actors in the film are all average. I wouldn’t say anyone’s performance is very good. Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel are good but have such cheesy lines that they get annoying after a while. Saif Ali Khan looks his age now with his hair gelled back. His entry scene with him walking out of the water like a young stud boy didn’t help one bit! Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandes look hot with all their sexy outfits revealing their legs and cleavage. Add John Abraham to that list. He’s smoking hot! 😛

The songs are decent and can be danced to. Thank you Pritam! The songs ‘Beintehaan’ and ‘Party on my mind’ are the best in my opinion.

Race 2 as a movie has been disappointing albeit a little entertaining thanks to the 2 and a half  hour fashion show.

Cocktail- Movie Review

Roochster

I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to watching Cocktail ever since I saw the trailer. Chick flick and all that jazz. So as soon as I got done with school, I ran to watch the movie and here’s what I thought of it.

The story is about Gautam (fun, flirtacious, outgoing), Veronica ( loud, attention-seeking, outspoken) and Meera (cultured, boring, compassionate). So, Gautam and Veronica hit it off instantly and start dating but then Meera gets into the picture and things get complicated between the three of them.

In a way, the main plot is a lot like Dil to pagal hai- Gautam- Shahrukh, Meera- Madhuri, Veronica- Karishma. What I mean is there is nothing unique about the story. Its quite predictable. The screenplay is not up to the mark because of which the entire story starts falling down rapidly even though the look entices you and makes you want to watch the entire film. Superb styling and cinematography- very rich. The direction and editing is a bit disconnected because of which there’s no proper flow and it gets you a little restless, especially in the second half of the movie.

I love how Deepika Padukone is styled in terms of costumes, hair, etc. She totally looks the character even though her personality doesn’t allow her to project that in the best possible way. I thought Diana Penty was really boring. She was seedhi-saadhi  and looks beautiful which she had to be but there’s no charm in her which would draw you to her. Saif was his usual self, subtly funny and charming but nothing different from his earlier roles.

Pritam has done a good job with regard to the music yet again. Groovy numbers and Kavita Seth’s voice in ‘Tumhi ho bandhu’ is just too good! I love how the verses have been sung by her! I also like ‘Daaru Desi’ and the songs they played in the nightclub scenes.

So yes, I am quite disappointed with Cocktail. I’d suggest you wait for it to come on some TV channel or just watch it on Dvd.

Agent Vinod- Movie Review

Roochster

The writer is confused, the director is confused, the actors are trying to act smart thinking it’s a James Bond movie, Saif (producer) and Kareena are honeymooning all over the world at the expense of the film which means you must NOT waste your hard earned money watching it and rather just log on to youtube and watch the songs ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’ and ‘Pungi’.
