Bajatey Raho- Movie Review

Bajatey-Raho-posterVinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey make a great time and usually choose great films. Was this one any good? Well from the trailer it did seem fun. Here’s my review.

Sukhwinder Baweja (Tusshar Kapoor) and his mother (Dolly Ahluwalia) along with Mintoo (Vinay Pathak), Ballu (Ranvir Shorey) and a young boy (Husaan Saad) are on a mission to con the evil businessman/ industrialist Mr. Sabbarwal (Ravi Kissen) for something dreadful he did in the past.

Director Shashant Shah who’s made films like Dasvidaniya and Challo Dilli has hit a hattrick with his small budget comedy film Bajatey Raho. Now the story is nothing spectacular or unique. There are too many cliché’s for it to be different so I wish a little more attention was paid to the story. What is done well is the screenplay. There was a good flow that kept the movie going and made it entertaining without thinking about how predictable it is apart from a few songs that popped up now and then. The cinematography by Arun Varma is very good. Lovely colours and light used in various scenes. Both art direction and styling are simple and real. The sweaters suited Tusshar Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia dressed up as a more fashionable, modern lady looked surprisingly good.

The background music helps quicken the pace. The music is ok. The song ‘Naagin Naagin’ stands out and doesn’t quite fit in with the theme of the movie.  The song ‘Tennu main love karda’ from Desi Boyz converted into a bhajan is quite hilarious.

All the actors in the movie are brilliant but Dolly Ahluwalia steals the show! She is superb! Her comic timing and acting ability is fantastic! Vinay Pathak and Ranvir Shorey sort of go hand in hand and share great chemistry as we have seen in the past. They were both a treat to watch. Tusshar Kapoor was good too. Ravi Kissen is a natural actor and delivers his performance with ease. Vishakha Singh as Tusshar Kapoor’s love interest was not bad either even though there was barely any chemistry between her and Tusshar. Anya Singh as Gudiya was probably the only actor who was trying too hard to act.

Small budget films are finally getting the attention they deserve and people do like them. Bajatey Raho might be a little too predictable but it’s a movie that’s fun to watch and is quite entertaining too. If not at a theatre, do watch it at home.

Heroine- Movie Review

Heroine was one film I just had to watch because the subject was so interesting. But the film was so disappointing! Here’s why.

Heroine is about this superstar who can’t act, much like some of our very own Bollywood stars. She’s hot and gets endorsements and movies just because she’s a star. Her love life sucks and as a result she’s always moody and not the first choice when it comes to working with other actors and directors. A PR person comes in who helps her reach a better stage in her career only to be let down because of Kareena’s erratic mood swings and what she does with them. And of course, Madhur Bhandarkar style we see various phases of a ‘heroine’ and those around her in the industry.

Ok now, what was Madhur Bhandarkar thinking?! Yes Chandni bar, Page 3 and Fashion worked because somewhere they were realistic and gave an insight into a world we all want to know about. Heroine is nothing but negative all through! Kareena Kapoor plays a star who has no friends even outside the industry, she gets big films like Katrina Kaif based on looks, she smokes and drinks a lot, she’s moody, she’s insecure about love and even career, she’s had a bad past and what not. So basically there’s nothing positive about her except the fact that she looks good. Madhur Bhandarkar must really hate people in Bollywood to show what he’s shown in the film. All make up men and designers are gay, a small budget film director has that unkempt look and is always more respected as compared to other directors, the main heroine has no friends only, everyone in the industry is a compulsive smoker… how many more clichés ya! To top it all, there’s a lameass ‘item number’ called Halkat Jawani which falls flat on its face because it’s as bad as the songs in his earlier movie ‘Page 3’. Remember ‘Kuwan ma doob jaaoongi’?

So yeah, Madhur Bhandarkar is somehow losing his tag of a ‘realistic film maker’. Heroine is incredibly exaggerated and negative, as if made to remove his bhadaas on some people in the Bollywood film industry. All the actors except for Kareena Kapoor look like they’re from the 90s and even dress like that. The story takes too long to end!

Kareena Kapoor is obviously the star of the film. She looks great and has even acted well but we’ve seen Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut doing the same thing in Fashion, Bipasha Basu in Raaz 3 and Vidya Balan, who was so much more realistic and better in The Dirty Picture if we talk about recent similar films.  Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda have done a good job even though they had small roles. Mugdha Godse said, “Shits!” which sums up her acting skills and how she talks in real life.  Lillette Dubey, Shahana Goswami, Ranvir Shorey and Divya Dutta are superb! Other than that, there are just a bunch of dumb actors excited to work with Madhur Bhandarkar.

Honestly, there could have been so much more to make Heroine a sure shot superhit but Madhur Bhandarkar screwed it up with stereotyping almost everything and creating a film full of negativity and the bad side of Bollywood. Not cool!

Ek Tha Tiger- Movie Review

First day first show! Believe it or not, but a show at 9 30 am was housefull and probably for the first time in years, I made sure the tickets were booked in advance! Reason? Do I really need to even say it? Salman Khan ya! Duh!

So, as we’ve seen in the trailers, Salman Khan plays an agent from RAW (India Intelligence Agency). The story of the movie revolves around a scientist from the Trinity College who is a suspect for selling the secrets of missile technology of India to Pakistan. While he’s on his mission, he meet Katrina Kaif who works as the scientist’s caretaker. Then of course, mashallah, he falls in love with her and romance happens, thriller happens and action happens. To know more, go to IMDB man!

The entire film looks so rich and beautiful I can’t tell you! Superb cinematography! Breathtaking visuals and good direction. Kabir Khan’s directed John Abraham starrer Kabul Express which wasn’t that great and New York which was good so I was hoping this would be a decent watch, keeping in mind its also a Yash Raj film. The actors look well styled. I felt the story of the film was good too even though most of it was super predictable, filmy and the concentration was more on the love aspect.

Salman Khan, after a very long time does not overpower the film. His character is intense and yet simple. He’s not trying to act too smart like in Dabangg, Wanted, Bodyguard, etc. He’s never looked hotter and I wouldn’t change a thing about the way he’s acted! Katrina’s role is also as important as his and she looks beautiful with her natural make-up. She also has some action scenes for which she got lots of whistles and hoots. I think both have done justice to their parts. There’s good chemistry and even with the height difference, they compliment each other very well. Ranvir Shorey plays an integral part in the movie as Salman’s friend and he’s acted well too.

In a movie like this, the background music plays an important role and I must say that they’ve done a good job with it. The ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ tune is perfect for the movie! The songs are nice. I love ‘Mashallah’ and even ‘Banjara Banjara’ and ‘Laapata’ are decent.

Overall, it’s not a superhit film for me but I was entertained throughout and I think Salman should do more films like this.
