Dil Dhadakne Do- Movie Review

Roochster

Dil dhadakne do posterAfter Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Dil Dhadakne Do has been the most awaited movie this summer and boy was I excited to watch it! Here’s a quick review.

Plot in short– A dog by the name of Pluto tells the story of a Punjabi family that’s got quite a lot of issues in their lives. The husband (Anil Kapoor) and wife (Shefali Shah) are rich but have their own set of problems. The business is going downhill and so is their married life. Their son (Ranveer Singh) is an obedient boy (so they think), following his father’s footsteps and trying hard to do well at the business but sadly can’t so they’re trying to marry him off to a rich man’s daughter. Their daughter (Priyanka Chopra) is married unwillingly to rich businessman Rahul Bose. There’s everything but love in their marriage and she can’t wait to break free and get back to her one time love Farhan Akhtar. It’s their parent’s anniversary and to celebrate, invitations are sent out to close friends and family for a cruise holiday in Turkey and Greece. On the cruise, Ranveer meets Anushka Sharma, a dancer, Priyanka Chopra meet her ex boyfriend Farhan Akhtar and bitter truths come out between the anniversary couple. Will this dysfunctional family come together?

The Good– Being a Zoya Akhtar film, this one is a pure family entertainer with witty dialogues by Farhan Akhtar, a super stylish ensemble cast, setting, production design, beautiful cinematography and very good performances. She brings out the best side in all her actors. As you will see, Anil Kapoor, with his salt and pepper hair looks like the charming 50 year old who barely looks his age. He’s fantastic as the authoritative and hyper father. Shefali Shah as the wife and mother plays her part with finesse. Priyanka Chopra flaunts her taunt body and delivers an outstanding performance. Ranveer Singh is superb! Naturally witty with his own style, he creates a screen presence like no one else. All the supporting actors- Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Anushka Sharma, Zarina Wahab, Riddhima Sud, the gossiping aunties, and the others equally contribute in making the film a fun 170 minutes to watch.

The Not-so-good– Even though the film is entertaining, there are some things which are extremely underplayed. For instance, Ranveer and Anushka’s love story doesn’t seem to have enough depth to go fighting for it in the end. Also, the first half is a bit of a drag. Too many people, maybe? The music by Shankar Ehsaan & Loy is alright. Luckily not too many songs. The humour in the film may not appeal to a large audience. The classes may love it but the masses may not because of the ‘upper class humour’.

Verdict– A movie with a happy ending and some great performances, this one’s a fun, light humoured family entertainer.

Gunday- Movie Review

Roochster

Gunday-Movie-PosterFor Gunday I wasn’t expecting any theatre to be housefull; that too a show at 1:30 pm. But you know what?  I was wrong! I had to watch it in a theatre that stinks of pee (Central Plaza) ‘cause that was the closest theatre and the next show wasn’t too far away. Anyway, getting down to my review.

Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) both Bangladeshi refugees escape from Bangladesh as Gun Couriers. In Calcutta they take up a job at a small restaurant where they get thrown out from. They decide to make money to survive by stealing coal from trains and selling it. As time goes by, they become greater and more successful at smuggling coal and soon become the most popular ‘Gunday’ in Calcutta. A tough cop (Irrfan Khan) is all set to catch both of them and put them behind bars for all the criminal evidence he has against them. Will their ‘gundagiri’ be successful?

Director Ali Abbas Zafar definitely knows how to make his actors give their finest performance. If you see the story, it’s a typical Bollywood film from the 70s or 80s where revenge and blind love are the basics. The screenplay is alright and the background score really adds pace to the film which seems a bit slow at times. I wish the twists weren’t so predictable. I could guess every single one! The dialogue delivery though is superb! The action scenes are decently choreographed.

The styling is good. Both the actors have killer bodies that you can’t help stare at! The setting could have been better for sure. It all feels too polished and fresh for the 70s, 80s and 90s. The cinematography is great but then, all of Yash Raj’s films have the best cinematographers and use the best equipment to get the most splendid results.

When we speak of performances, there’s no denying that Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor are fantastic actors! They’re smooth, expressive and say their dialogues with style. While Ranveer Singh has his body to score lots of points, Arjun Kapoor impresses with the way he plays a grey shade to his character. Their chemistry is free flowing and entertaining and the best part is that both complement each other. Priyanka Chopra doesn’t have a major role but it is still significant and has done a good job. She looks as scintillating as ever! Irrfan Khan by default makes his presence felt in a large way. He is an actor of another level. Just too good!

The music by Sohail Sen is not exceptional and not that bad either. ‘Tune maari entry’ is my favourite. The other songs are alright. The visuals are beautiful in the song with Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh.

On the whole, Gunday is a one time watch. Masala entertainer with superb performances!

Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram Leela- Movie Review

Roochster

Ramleela-posterSanjay Leela Bhansali is a fantastic director! Goliyon ki Raas Leela Ram Leela just proves that. Here’s more.

So Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone) belong to families that are constantly at war with each other, trying to kill and beat each other up all the time. Yes, you guessed it right. It’s Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

If you’ve seen Ishaqzaade and Issaq in the recent times, you would see a lot of similarities. Ram Leela however, is a classier more passionate film in terms of content among other things. With films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Black to his credit, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has created magic yet again. His every idea is romanticized on screen creating visual poetry you would like to continue watching in real life as well. His vision is both dreamy and real and that translates beautifully. Cinematographer S Ravi Varman creates perfection in his every frame adding to the exquisiteness of the gorgeous sets and locations. The Art director has a huge hand in this who brings out the best in every shot with sets that look grand and palace-like. There’s richness in every frame and the culture, traditions and music are depicted beautifully, making India look more beautiful than what it already is. The screenplay may seem stretched in the second half but you wont mind it because there’s this magnetic force pulling you in which has the ability to keep you gripped. There’s a lot of passion with which the film has been made and it shows.

The costumes, hair, make up and overall look of the film have been given a lot of attention. Each character has a defined sense of dressing. The background score is great and the music by Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself is alright. The songs ‘Lahu muh lag gaya’ and ‘Dhol baaje’ have this Gujarati-folk-ish thing to it that makes it nice to listen to and watch. Brilliant choreography in both the songs. The rest are quite blah.

Ok so now when it comes to performances, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone sizzle on screen. They have this raw, sensual chemistry that is sexy and unpretentious. They look great together and have done a brilliant job acting as well. Ranveer Singh’s accent sometimes slips but Deepika is steady and shines in her performance. Supriya Pathak with her annoying Gujju accent is still powerful and holds your full attention. All the other supporting actors too are exceptional and create the right impact.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is definitely back with a bang and Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram Leela is a film you must watch for its richness in every form!

Lootera- Movie Review

Roochster

Lootera PosterLootera looked beautiful from the time I saw the trailer and the song ‘Sawaar loon’ is lovely. There’s a charm which instantly draws you besides the fact that there’s Sonakshi Sinha and Ranveer Singh in this love story directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Well, there’s more. Read on.

Varun (Ranveer Singh), a thug posing as an archeologist goes to a zamindar’s property in Calcutta with the intention of stealing all his expensive property. Whilst in the process, he falls in love with the zamindar’s daughter (Sonakashi Sinha) and likewise. Very soon though he has to get on with the purpose of his visit and so it’s almost like stabbing the father and daughter who are left with nothing but a small farmhouse in Dalhousie. A couple of years later, they are destined to meet again, only this time, she’s dying of tuberculosis and he’s trying to escape from the police and needs refuge. Is her Lootera here to stay?

Vikramaditya Motwane is a thinking director. With Udaan, he created magic. In Lootera, keeping in mind that it’s a period film, there would be a lot of research and background work before actually starting to shoot it. He’s done a great job as a director by letting the actors breathe and act so naturally. The story is well woven and so are the characters. The screenplay is a bit of a drag though. I wish the film was better paced. Visually it is amazing! From the forest to the snow, including all the grainy night scenes, there’s something very captivating about what you see. The styling, locations and set design has a lot to do with it. Sonakshi Sinha, though in sarees throughout, looks gorgeous. Even without make-up she looks great. Ranveer Singh is well styled too.

The music by Amit Trivedi goes very well with the theme of the film and is not pretentiously ‘old’. As mentioned earlier, the song Sawaar loon is beautiful.

Sonakshi Sinha is brilliant! She’s one of the best actresses we have today and with Lootera the scale goes one notch higher. Ranveer Singh has acted well but his voice is a bit unclear in a few scenes. Divya Dutta has a small role but is good. Adil Hussain as the tough cop was also very good.

As a film Lootera is well made and makes for a great classic romance but is too slow paced to watch it more than once.

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl- Movie Review

Roochster

I’ve loved Anushka Sharma since her first film and liked Ranveer Singh in his but I absolutely loved them together in Band Baaja Baaraat and couldn’t wait to watch Ladies vs Ricky Bahl for the same reason. Was the movie any good though? You’re just about to find out!

Ricky Bahl (Ranveer Singh) is a conman who’s conned more than 30 rich beautiful girls for money. He changes his look and city to avoid getting caught. Out of the 30 dumb girls, there’s one smart girl who gets hold of two others and they pull in (Ishika) Anushka Sharma, who’s a brilliant salesgirl to con the charmer. The rest of the story is predictable so I wont say anymore.

If you’re a girl who’s filmy, romantic and loves Bollywood, here’s a movie you just can’t miss! The story is simple but the treatment is great! Superb screenplay, brilliant cinematography and colours (Yashraj never goes wrong with that ever!), lovely sets, make-up and costumes, realistic dialogues and acting, ok music and superb direction. There aren’t too many faults I could find in this film to be honest. It was just pure entertainment and fun throughout.

Ranveer Singh in this movie is just fantastic! He not only looks good but also acts well and I love the way he says ‘I love you’! I just melted when he said it! 😛 Anushka Sharma is gorgeous! She has amazing screen presence and anything she wears looks as if it’s just made for her. She’s a natural actor and I love the way she delivers her dialogues. All the supporting actors are also very good but I’ll specially mention the girl who plays ‘Dimple’. She’s got the best lines and was just perfect for the role with superb comic timing! She definitely deserves an award for the best supporting actress!

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl might not appeal to a lot of guys but most girls will love it even though it is predictable. It’s a fun film and I think you should watch it!

Band Baaja Baaraat- Movie Review

Roochster

You’re probably wondering why I went for a movie which has a star cast without stars. Well, I went for it because it’s a Yash Raj film. Simple. Anything romantic, colourful and filmy attracts my attention and so I went for Band Baaja Baaraat (BBB) alone! Yes! Alone because most of my friends would just make a face at the mention of the film’s name or actors in it.

So yes, BBB is full of shaadis. How Shruti (Anushka Sharma) and Bittoo (Ranveer Singh) want to be the best wedding planners in Delhi and so start a Wedding Planning company called ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ . Their rule is that “Agar karna hai vyapaar, toh na karo pyaar” or something like that. They love working together and depend on each other to make all the weddings successful. BUT one night they get drunk and sleep together and before she knows it, Shruti’s in love with Bittoo. Uh Oh!

Yeah yeah, pata hai predictable hai lekin sadela film nahin hai. Like I said earlier, I love Yash Raj films and the dhinchakness is just awesome! The sets look beautiful and vibrant and so do Anushka’s costumes. It makes you wish that your wedding would look as beautiful as their sets.

Amar Singh’s son Ranveer Singh is not bad for his first film but I’d rather watch him as a side actor. Anushka Sharma looks gorgeous in the film. I also think she’s a great actress, very natural. So that way the director’s done his job pretty well, especially cause he wasn’t working with “stars”. The dialogues in some scenes were good but otherwise could have been better. Also, I think the music could have been way better… I just liked one song-Ainvayi Ainvayi. The background score was good though.

So overall, BBB is not mahaan but it’s not bad either. I liked it because it’s entertaining. Time pass movie.
