Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden, Bandra (W)- Review

Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden has been around for a while but I got to trying it only very recently. We went for dinner and drinks on a random weekday see what it was like.

Food and Drinks: Since we were invited to try the place, we ordered for small portions of multiple dishes. Here’s all the stuff we had.

Red Lotus cocktail- Vodka, cranberry, litchi and lemon grass (Rs. 450)-This was totally my kind of cocktail- less alcohol and sweet. If that is your thing, you will love it! I definitely did! I usually have just vodka+ cranberry but lemongrass added a whole new flavour to it which was perfect and definitely something I can try at home some day.

Black Currant Basil Belgian shake- Light beer, blackcurrant, basil, icecream (Rs. 450) – Karan called for this very weird ‘Beer shake’. It was just super sweet black currant milkshake with no trace of beer or basil. Totally avoidable!

Shaoxing BBQ Cottage Cheese in Tartlets- Wok tossed shaoxing wine flavoured cottage cheese garnished scallions (Rs. 350) – This tasted a lot like Kung Pao paneer served with fried kadak puris which went well together. Tastewise not bad at all. Wish the paneer was softer.

Shaoxing BBQ Chicken with Shitake & Scallions in Tartlets (Rs.450) – This was the non-vegetarian version of what I had and Karan thought it was not bad either. He just didn’t like the tartlets much cause they were very oily.

Herb Crusted Buttermilk Chicken Fingers with a Dynamite dip (Rs.375) – Karan felt that this dish was just okay. The chicken was a bit chewy.

German style nachos- Grilled onion, Crème Fraiche, Roasted pepper PipperadeMexico meets Germany (Rs. 299) – Let’s just say I’ve had better. The Nachos were fresh out from a Doritos/Cornitos packet which beats the whole purpose of eating Nachos at a restaurant. The onions were oily, there was barely any flavour from the cheese sauce and cream. Tomato salsa or beans could have saved the dish but that didn’t come with the dish.

Margherita pizza (Rs. 399) – The pizza could have been excellent if the crust wasn’t burnt and if there was some more pizza sauce on the pizza. But it was good overall and went well with our drinks.

Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Beetroot Veloute (Rs. 449) – This was by far the best dish we had! The creamy beetroot sauce was delicious and full of flavour. The sweet potato Gnocchi was not as soft as I had wished it to be but the taste was just right and that’s what made it a really good dish.

Ambience– Located at Hill road, above Mc Donald’s, Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden is a chilled out place to hang out with friends over a few drinks and some food. You will find lit up trees between tables which add some warmth to the otherwise grey and rustic look of the place.

Service & Prices– The staff was warm and friendly and helped us with our orders. I’d probably go on a random day to judge the service better since they knew I was there to review. The pricing is proper for the overall experience of the place.

Verdict– Kaitlyn’s Beer Garden is a nice place to hang out but can be better with minor improvements in the food. Looking forward to my next Red Lotus there! J

1 Tablespoon Pizza Kitchen, Matunga (E)- Review

1-tablespoon-1 I’d been craving pizza for some time and wished to go have some over the weekend; when I got a mail to try 1 Tablespoon, a pizza place. Ha! My prayers were answered! So, Karan and I decided to go to their Matunga outlet and treat ourselves to some really good pizza! Now when I say good, I mean good alright! Read on.

Food– One Tablespoon serves Italian food, mainly pizza and pasta. They also have paninis and some side dishes such as Garlic rolls, Hummus and Pita and coolers. Being a vegetarian only place, this might be a bit disheartening for the non-vegetarians, but I promise you even the Veg pizzas are brilliant! Here’s all the stuff we had:

Spaghetti Aglio Olio– Slightly dry and spicey, but tastewise it was perfect! We thought we’d just try it but wiped it clean because of how yummy it was.

1-tablespoon-pastaCiao Chili (Tomato sauce, cheese, Ricotta, Red Chilli) – My favourite from all the pizzas we tried. This was the first pizza we tried and everything from the bread to the sauce to the toppings was perfect. Karan preferred the Rosa Mexicana pizza though.

Rosa Mexicana (Mexican sauce, cheese, tomatoes, sweet corn, jalapenos, onions) – This was a fully loaded pizza with a Mexican twist. If you like your pizza loaded with toppings, you must have this one.

Mushroom Lovers (Tomato sauce, cheese, mushrooms, minced garlic) – I’m not a mushroom lover but Karan said it was pretty nice.

Quattro Formaggi (Tomato sauce, Mozzarella, Cheddar, Parmesan, Scamorza, Green onions, garlic) – The onions and garlic made a big difference to the regular super cheesy pizza. Try it!

Raspberry Iced Tea, Lemon Iced Tea, Orange Cooler (Tang)-All were too sweet and we had to ask them to add water and ice.

1-tablespoon-pizzasAmbience & Service – Located in Matunga East under a residential building, One Tablespoon is a small place with 3 to 4 tables to sit. A brick wall with a little window stands opposite the tables, adding a nice rustic feel to the restaurant. They deliver to nearby places and also have another outlet at Lower Parel, where they serve pizza by the slice and non veg food.  We were served well and so glad to have ordered all the right stuff.

Prices– As we were invited, our dinner was completely complimentary however, if you plan to go on your own too, everything you eat there is worth every penny. The pizzas range from Rs. 285-405 for a 11” pizza good for one person, the Aglio Olio pasta is for Rs. 275, Paninis are for Rs.195- 225. The coolers are for Rs. 75 each.

1-tablespoon-2Verdict– We’re definitely going to One Tablespoon again, next time to Lower Parel so Karan can try the non-vegetarian pizzas too. Love! Love! Love! Go try! NOW!

Vedge, Andheri (W)- Review

Vedge 6My recent visits to new restaurants proves one thing- all of them are trying to be ‘different’ and give customers something ‘new’ by experimenting with your basic dishes. With their new menu, Vedge too has gotten into that experimental space. I was invited along with some other bloggers from the Food Bloggers Association of India (FBAI) to try new items from their menu. Here’s what I thought of all that I tried.

Vedge 1Food– We had a set menu and could choose what we wanted from it. Let me tell you that it was a LOT of food as we ended up trying most of the dishes from the menu. I’m going to describe what I thought of all the stuff I tried in one- two lines each. All these dishes were well presented and looked delicious.

Vedge 2Pan Supari Martini (Masala, Betal leaf, apple juice)- A brilliant start to my evening, this drink is an absolute must have if you like paan!

Vedge 8Creamy Tomato, Basil & Parmesan soup- I am not a soup fan but this was a delicious soup! Thick, creamy and yum!

Wok Tossed potato, honey chilli sauce- This was the best starter we had! A winner for sure.

Sweet  corn & cheese ball bites with Fresh Herbed mayo- Unfortunately there was a small strand of hair as I cut through one of the crispy looking balls. A big turn off! However, I ignored that and tried another piece. Not bad at all!

Vedge Fully loaded Nachos- These were crispy, loaded with capsicum, cheese, sour cream, olives and tomato salsa. I wish the nacho chips were smaller though.

Chilli Bean Tacos- The filling was adequate but the taste was just ok.

Thai Corn fritters with sweet chilli sauce-This was my least favourite dish. There was too much corn and it was super spicey.

Vedge 4Jalapeno popper & Cream cheese pizza- This was probably the most pointless, bland pizza I’ve ever had! There was no sauce and it felt like I was eating bread and cheese.

Sabzi Galouti Kebab with Coriander & Mint chutney- This was better than I had expected. The kebabs were nice and soft and went well with the accompanying chutney.

Tandoori paneer tikka slider with cheddar cheese and Achari Mayo- The Achari mayo was the USP of this burger. A very interesting mix indeed! Try it.

Desi cheese korma with layered flaky Malabari paratha- Great texture of the paratha but it was so sweet! Since the Korma was also sweet, the combination just didn’t make sense. A spicy sabzi would probably taste better with it.

Vedge 3Thai Massaman curry, brown flavoured rice- The rice was great but the curry was too sweet for our liking.

Stir fry vegetables in hot chilli & basil sauce with Burnt garlic fried rice- I loved the fried rice even on its own! The stir fry veggies  gravy was nice and spicy and went very well with the rice.

Beet & Cheddar Risotto, Lemon, corn & Paprika Risotto- Both lacked the flavour, cheese and thick and sticky consistency one would expect to find in a Risotto.

Spicy Vanilla Chai shake- The combination is just bad! I had one sip and that was it.

Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting- I loved the outer layer but the inside was super sweet and just not that nice.

Vedge 5Magic Chocolate pot- Apart from the melting gimmick, the dessert has nothing to rave about. It only oozes sweetness, eventually overpowering the real taste of the ‘Magic pot’.

Chocolate Mud Pile- I liked that the cake, ice cream, chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, chocolate soil and drinking chocolate were arranged separately and the chef came and mixed it all up for us. I could do without the extra sugar and chocolate soil though.

Ambience– The restaurant has a contemporary + rustic vibe to it. A little bit of this and that. I loved the Moroccan tiles and the hanging filament lamps.

Vedge 7Service & Prices– I wouldn’t be able to comment on the service and prices as we were invited as a blogger and the meal was complimentary.  However, I would like to say that our server Rajesh was very polite and served us well and tolerated all our nakhras while we clicked photos and discussed how the dishes were. From what I gather after reading the menu, I can say that one would end up spending roughly about 750 per head.

Verdict– It was an average experience where food is concerned. I would recommend the chinese food and the Pan Supari martini.

Came here for the second time and it’s been an equally disappointing experience.

Food– The food is bland, the quantity is less and nothing great about the taste overall.
They brew their own beer and we had called for the Mojo Rising 2 ltrs tower which was nice and malty. I had a Cranberry Basil punch which was good.
The fries were so less…smaller than Mc Donald’s regular sized fries. The boys had the Chicken slider which is basically 3 mini burgers that they said were very bad. Karan said that the bread was more flavourful than the pattie. Shame! He would rate that dish -1 on 5. Uuhhh yeah that bad.
The Farmhouse pizza which had a pesto base, topped with bell peppers and pine nuts was so-so. Bland again. We avoided the mushrooms and pumpkin on it. Thank God!
The Onion rings were… wait for it… bland again. Less oily though, which is a good thing.
The Lemon cheesecake was thankfully our last order and luckily tasted good with the right texture and taste. I would have it again if I ever went there.

Ambience– Great place to hang out with a nice vibe, good music and comfortable seating. They have Jenga and Uno to entertain. It’s quite a large place actually with an inside and outside section along with a space on top as well.

Service–  Good service. We would have liked better recommendations for food though.

Prices– We paid Rs. 3549 in total for the 4 of us  including the Beer tower which is not bad but it pinched ‘cause the food was not good at all.

Verdict– Gave it a second chance and was disappointed again. I’m not sure if I’d go there again. Oh well.

Serafina, Fort- Review

Serafina 1Being a Verified Reviewer on Zomato has its perks and I must say that I’m blessed ‘cause I’ve been trying so many new restaurants and cafes all around the city! When Kaiarsh from Zomato, mailed me about the Serafina #Zomatomeetup, I was super excited! I had read mostly good things about the restaurant and I was finally going to try it myself. *woot woot*

Food– Where do I begin! So there was this special menu just for us at the #Zomatomeetup from which we could order whatever we wanted. Now imagine a bunch of hungry foodies sitting at a table…yeah kinda like vultures waiting to sweep its prey off the ground. Haha! Here’s all the stuff I had.

Fresh Lime Soda (sweet) – Perfect in taste, just needed ice.

Potato & Leek Soup- Have it only if you really must have a soup. I’m not a fan of potato in liquid form.

Potato Involtini (Roasted baby potatoes topped with creamy fondue sauce and caramelized garlic- THE BEST potato starter EVER! You cannot, just cannot skip this beauty of a dish when at Serafina! This dish must win the best starter award if there could be something like that. I swear, it’s that good.

Margherita Pizza- Pretty good. I liked that the crust wasn’t as thin as a naan and in fact was slightly crispy.

Serafina2copyTartufo Nero (Robiola cheese, fontina, truffle cheese, truffle oil, sliced black truffle) – Stinks like rotten milk mixed sweaty shoes and methane gas but tastes so good that it will compel you to forget about the stench. It doesn’t sound appetizing at all but once you eat it, you will love it. You’ve just got to trust me about this.

Melanzane Speziata (San Marzano tomatoes, Mozzarella cheese, spicy eggplant, jalapeños, lettuce, goat cheese and balsamic reduction) – I’m not a fan of eggplant, especially on pizza but this one was quite something. A combination of everything right. Tad spicy but delicious nonetheless.

Penne Alla Vodka (Italian peeled tomato sauce, cream and a little vodka) – This reddish creamy pasta was good. I liked that the pasta was nice and saucy.

Farfalle Al Pesto (Bowtie pasta with homemade pesto) – I would have liked some more pesto in this pasta.

Serafina3Ravioli Al Tartufo Nero (Home style Black Truffle Ravioli and a touch of butter) – Smelly again but taste-wise ace.

Risotto Pepperonata (Creamy saffron Risotto topped with assorted bell peppers sautéed in pomodoro sauce) – Great combination and a happy taste that lingers till you have your next dish. I would say let nothing but dessert be eaten after this dish.

Jalapeno Mac n Cheese- Mac n cheese is my usual preference of pasta because I love white sauce pasta. I have to say though that this one at Serafina was just okay. The jalapenos didn’t do much and it was a little bland for my liking.

TiramisucopyTiramisu- OH MY GOD! Its been more than a week and I still can’t forget my first bite of Serafina’s Tiramisu. Whoever came up with that recipe, is pure genius! I would skip all my meals to have just that. Sogoodsogoodsogood! If you’re thinking of what to give me as a birthday or anniversary present, I would love Serafina’s Tiramisu, thank you.

Chocolate Ganache Mousse Cake- #Yummyinmytummy! This one’s got the right amount of chocolate to make you satisfy all your chocolate cravings, especially during that time of the month, ladies. Gentlemen, you will know what it feels like to have your craving satisfied during that time of the month if you were a lady.

Panna Cotta- This was my least favourite dessert. I didn’t like the texture of the Panna Cotta or the taste.

Ambience– With a mezzanine floor, Serafina at Fort is a very well planned and executed restaurant with adequate amount of space to sit, well done interiors and comfortable furniture. The music will take you back to the 80s and 90s, songs that are hum worthy. There’s a bar if you want to just grab a drink and a wood fire oven open for you to see how well they make pizzas from scratch.

Service– I can’t really comment about the service until the next visit as this was a #Zomatomeetup and we had waiters at our service throughout.

Serafina4copyPrices– I wouldn’t say Serafina is reasonably priced. Yes, it is on the expensive side but the quantity and quality of the food is perfect. The potato and leek soup is priced at Rs. 250. The Potato Involtini is priced at Rs. 375, the pastas are mostly priced at Rs. 600 and up and so are the mains. Now the pizzas are priced from Rs. 475 to Rs. 1250 for a 9” pizza. Yup! The Tartufo Nero is priced at Rs.1250 because of its expensive ingredients. The desserts are priced at Rs. 375 for the Chocolate Ganache Cake and Panna Cotta while the Tiramisu which is full value for money is priced at Rs. 595. A Fresh Lime Soda is priced at Rs. 150. In all, if you share a starter, main course and dessert along with individual mocktails, you would spend roughly 1000-1200 per head which is not bad for the brilliant food and Tiramisu you get here!

Verdict– My review can be summed up in 3 MUST HAVE dishes at Serafina- Potato Involtini, Tartufo Nero (Ignore the smell) pizza and TIRAMISU.

Vicinia Cafe & Bar- Kemps Corner- Review

When I heard that Subway had shut down at Kemps Corner I was a bit surprised only to find out that a sweet looking cafe called Vicinia had opened. I did want to try it immediately but never got the chance. Now that I finally did, here I am writing about my experience.

Vicinia Cafe2Food– The menu at Vicinia consists of European and American cuisine. My brother and I wanted to get a taste of everything and so we tried quite a few dishes. As an accompaniment with our food we called for mocktails. I had an Orange Blossom which was quite nice and my brother had a Sparkling Guava drink which was alright. As a starter the first thing that caught my eye was the Cranberry and Goat cheese Crostini. Interesting combination and taste. I totally recommend it! We also tried the Cottage cheese skewers which tasted very good but were too small so it was more like having a starter before a proper starter. I wanted to try the pizza so thought a Margherita would be the best to get an idea. The crust was hard and the pizza sauce was just ok so the pizza overall was a disappointment. The Herbed Rice with Mixed Veggies was superb! It had the right flavours to make it deliciously good! I just wish the portion size of all these dishes was larger. Superb presentation of food otherwise! After a heavy meal, surprisingly I still had space for desserts and so we tried the Gooey Chocolate cake which was yummy. The Berry Ricotta Crumble looked better than it tasted and I would have finished it if it was tastier. I also tried their Classic Cold Coffee which I will recommend because it really was awesome!

Ambience– Located at Kemps Corner, Vicinia is a sweet little cafe and bar that replaced the famous Subway. With a mezzanine floor, Vicinia is adorned with simple and yet comfy-classy furniture. Its actually much larger than it looks from down. Well lit, it gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling and would be a great place to go on a date or simply catch up with a close friend.

Vicinia Cafe1Service– The staff is warm and know their stuff. Our food didn’t take too long to come and there were some nice recommendations from them which helped us pick what we did.

Prices– I wouldn’t say that the items on the menu are well priced because for the quantity you are paying much more. The portion size is small and you would have to call for many items to go out with a full stomach. The Cottage cheese skewers were for Rs.225, Cranberry & Goat Cheese Crostini Rs. 425, the mocktails were for Rs. 150, Margherita pizza was for Rs. 295, Veg Paprika with Herbed Rice was for Rs. 450. The gooey chocolate cake was for Rs. 250 and the Berry Ricotta crumble was for Rs. 200. The Classic cold coffee was for Rs. 135.

Verdict– A great place to meet a friend for a light snack and cold coffee. I recommend their Classic Cold Coffee, Cranberry & Goat Cheese Crostini and Veg paprika with Herbed Rice.

Rating– 3/5

Debonairs Pizza, Andheri (W) – Review

Debonairs pizza 1There are so many pizza joints all over that it’s only getting more and more confusing as to where to order from. Here’s one more to add to the confusion, atleast for the Andheri people. Debonairs Pizza is a South African chain of pizzas that’s finally come to India. I went to try the stuff very recently as a part of a Foodies’ Meet and here’s what I thought of it.

Food– After a long journey to Andheri all the way from South Mumbai I was hungry and couldn’t wait to dig into the food! My friend and I arrived at the right time as we got to try their ‘Pizza Pop-Itz’. They’re basically shaped like muffins and filled with cream cheese that can be had instead of the usual garlic bread which you get everywhere. We tried the Green Chutney-cheese one which was nice and the cream cheese with jalapeno and corn which I loved and highly recommend. Now we all got a chance to go into the Debonairs kitchen and make our own pizzas, groups of three at a time. The first pizza I tried was the Veg Express which had onions, capsicums and mushrooms. I thought it was really good. Next I tried the Pudina Paneer pizza which had paneer, capsicum, American corn and Peppadew (South African brand of peppers). This was my personal favourite because of how wholesome it was. The taste was bang on with the right flavours all fused into the pizza. Next we tried the most expensive- 3 cheese pizza (Mozzarrella, cheddar, feta), spring onions and Peppadew. I thought it was nice but not worth so much money. After hurriedly finish our slices, it was our turn to go make our very own pizza. We decided to make a Half-n-half. Paneer Makhani and Chicken Makhani. I discovered that Debonairs is not only generous with their toppings but also with cheese. We added a generous layer of cheese on top of the sauce and bread after which we added capsicum, onion, paneer, chicken, makhani sauce and then cheese again. Not bad huh?! The pizza was in the oven for less than 4 minutes and our there it was! Hot, fresh and delicious! I’d like to point out that the dough was absolutely fantastic and very well made (in house), unlike other pizza places where the crust is hard and chewy. Also, the toppings and cheese cover the entire pizza right upto the end.  They also have this Triple -Decker pizza which sounds really exciting and I’ll definitely try it the next time I go there.

Debonairs pizza 2Ambience & Service– Debonairs is mainly a pizza delivery joint but they also have outdoor seating arrangements for those who want to dine in. Located at Juhu-Versova Link road, this little pizza joint is not hard to notice. The place is chilled out and great to hang out at with your buddies. The staff is friendly and warm and the pizza doesn’t take too long to be ready too. Like Domino’s they have a deal that assures you get your pizza hot. A little sticker on the box turns red when it’s hot and black when it’s not. So if it’s not hot when you get it, consider your pizza (Only if more than Rs.500) free! Neat, huh?!

Prices– A simple 7” Margherita pizza costs Rs. 75. The Pizza Pop Itz which contain 4 pieces each cost Rs. 125, all the Veg pizzas apart from the Margherita and 3 Cheese cost Rs. 175 (smallest size). The 3 cheese pizza costs Rs. 325! All non-veg pizzas start from Rs. 195. Taxes additional. So the prices are quite competitive with other pizza joints but Debonairs gives you value by adding a lot of cheese and toppings, making your pizza worth every penny.

Verdict– If given a choice, I’d choose Debonairs Pizza over Pizza Express and Dominos!  I recommend the Pudina Paneer pizza and Cream cheese Pizza Pop-Itz!

36 Oak & Barley, Gowalia Tank- Review

36 Oak & barleyI went to 36 Oak & Barley for my best friend’s birthday dinner. I had heard good things about it and couldn’t wait to try the food and see for myself!

Food– We were super hungry when we reached and picked Nachos as the first item from the menu as a starter. The taste was good; the nacho chips were most certainly from a readymade packet and the quantity very less.  Next we tried their famous Chilly Cheese toast, nice but 4 pieces that were less even for one person and hence had to order one more. Next we tried their spiced scrambled cottage cheese bruschetta. Sounds fancy, right? Well, expect nothing more than paneer bhurji on bread. After that, I decided I just had to try their pizza and see if that was worth it. We called for two different ones. One was a simple margherita pizza with mushrooms, olives and onions as toppings. That was decent. The other one was a 3 cheese pizza, ok because it was quite bitter and the pizza sauce didn’t make the bitterness less. The herbed cheese pasta with bell peppers as topping was good but the quantity, less again. My cold coffee with hazelnut was divine! I wanted more but controlled. I wouldn’t recommend the desserts here at all. We had the Vertigo cake which was very ok and the Mud Cake which was bad. The ice cream was yum! For those of you who drink, they have happy hours throughout the day which means ‘buy 1 get 1 free’ on all alcohol options.

Ambience– Close to Cumballa Hill Hospital, 36 Oak & Barley wont be very easy to locate if you’re not familiar with Mumbai roads. It is close to August Kranti Maidan. Once you enter, you’ll find a chic and classy looking place with lots of space, a long bar and a big screen for watching matches. There’s also a smoking area made separately outside which is cool. A perfect place to go grab a drink!

Service– The service is very good! The waiter knew his stuff and was prompt. We got our food pretty quickly. It would be nice to see how it gets when the place is crowded. When we went, there were barely 4-5 tables full so the waiters didn’t have much to do but serve us well. Good job nonetheless.

Prices– The prices are a bit much for the quantity. The Nachos with cheese was for Rs. 225, the Chilly Cheese toast was for Rs. 150, the 3 cheese pizza and pasta were for Rs. 350 each, the cold coffee was for Rs. 150, the Mud Cake was for Rs. 325. We were 5 of us and the total bill amount was Rs.5600 with alcohol and taxes.

Verdict– The food is decent but not for the price. It’s an ideal place if you want to go grab a drink with your buddies. I recommend their cold coffee!

Pizza Express, ColabaI’m crazy about pizza and you probably already know that. For me Pizzeria a.k.a Pizza by the Bay sets the bar for good pizza. Is the latest UK based Pizza Express better or worse? You’re just about to find out.

Food– Considering the place is called ‘Pizza Express’ it’s not a surprise that you’ll find pizzas on the menu along with pasta, salads, sides, etc. We were super hungry and so decided to call for 2 portions of Garlic Bread first. It was a small round loaf which we had to ask them to cut into 3 slices each. Really good bread but where was the garlic? Next there were Baked Mushrooms… about 5 small ones served with dough balls to fill the plate. I don’t like mushrooms so didn’t have it but from what I saw, it looked pretty decent with some cheese as a filling. Thinking that the prices are steep, we decided to call for 1 veg and 1 non-veg 14” pizza. The Veg Giardiniera had mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, red peppers, artichokes, olives and cheese. I didn’t like it at all but the general review of it was just ok. The non-vegetarians had Pollo Ad Astra pizza which they thought was ok and adding a proper amount of toppings would help. Now we thought two 14” pizzas would suffice but we were wrong. We had to call for 2 more 14” pizzas- a Margherita which was boring and a Veg Calabrese (jalapenos, bell peppers, cheese) which was eaten mainly to fill our stomachs. But no, we did have to call for pasta to make sure. It was a simple red and white sauce penne pasta but they had the talent to make it an Indianised version or as our friend Sandeep very rightly called it ‘Penne Makhani’. In short, the pizzas have barely any toppings, the pizza sauce is not that great, the crust is super thin and not filling at all. The pasta is avoidable. Oh and I had to call for ketchup to make the pizza taste better but instead I got the same sauce they put on the pizza and pasta so the pizza didn’t taste any better.

Ambience– Pizza Express is located in Colaba, close to Gateway of India and opposite Indigo Deli. The decor is chic, fun and casual at the same time. I love the little booths and all the sayings all around the restaurant. The place is quite huge and has an upstairs section as well. The black and white flooring adds more character to the interiors. They have some pretty cool ceiling lamps too!

Service– Let’s just say we went on the wrong day. There was an event happening upstairs because of which the place was super noisy and crowded. Also, the staff seemed to be pretty disoriented and confused. They came to our table so many times with food that belonged to another table that we did get a bit impatient to get our food. Also, they are probably too confident that their pizzas are very good and so they just don’t have tomato ketchup. They shouldn’t forget that in India, most people like their pizza with ketchup.

Prices– I’m just going to list the prices first. Garlic bread- Rs. 150, Pollo Ad Astra (Chicken) 14” pizza- Rs. 595, Baked Mushrooms- Rs.280, Veg Calabrese 14”- Rs.725, Margherita 14”- Rs. 450 and Penne pasta- Rs. 495. Total- Rs. 3425 + taxes = Rs. 4125. I’m ok with paying Rs.700 per head as long as the quality and quantity of the food is good. Unfortunately, Pizza Express lacked both.

Verdict– Pizza Express doesn’t even come close to Pizza by the Bay in terms of taste, quality and awesomeness. I’m not sure if I want to go there again.

Cafe Sundance, Churchgate- Review

Cafe SundanceSundance cafe is back after about 2 years, only more classy and sophisticated. However, it was my first time there and here’s what I thought.

Food– The Sundance menu is very cool! Designed like a newspaper with tempting visuals, it serves burgers, sandwiches, pizza, pasta, salads, sides and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. My friend and I decided to share their Factory Nachos- Tortilla chips with cheese, guacamole, tomatoes. Now, it was good but the taste of the tortilla chips was so strong that we could barely taste the cheese sauce. Also, the quantity was barely enough for one person. For main course, my friend had the Terderloin Beef burger served with fries and salad. She really liked it but wished the bread was slightly crispier. I had the Penne in Alfredo sauce pasta sans mushrooms. It was good, a little bland but not meant for more than one person. Adding some bell peppers or corn would have helped. The Garlic bread was nice. My friend tried the Grapefruit Minty cooler which tasted more like Lemonade with a slight bitterness of Grapefruit. We were super full by now but decided to have a dessert anyway. We had their Baked Philadelphia cheesecake with Raspberry and really liked it but it would’ve tasted better warm. Also the sauce on the side tasted like Raspberry Tea sauce.

Cafe Sundance 2Ambience– I hadn’t eaten at the earlier one but I remember the decor used to be very different. Today, Cafe Sundance is classy, posh and expensive, located at Churchgate near Eros cinema. As you enter you’ll see an open kitchen to your left and a mezzanine floor above that. While you’re climbing the stairs, you’ll see some very cool items on display. The seating is comfortable and chic. The lighting is perfect. Also, they give the bill in an Archie’s comics book which is very unique!

Service– Our food came faster than expected and the staff is pretty efficient so no complaints there.

Prices– I understand that everything is getting very expensive but the prices at Cafe Sundance are a bit much for a casual dinner. The Terderloin burger was for Rs. 385, the Alfredo pasta was for Rs. 375, the Nachos were for Rs. 345, Grapefruit Minty cooler was Rs. 150, Cheesecake Rs. 240. And sadly I realized later that they charged us for a Garlic cheese bread when we had a normal Garlic bread portion. We were charged Rs.120 for it. With the taxes and service charge our bill amount came up to Rs. 1864!

Verdict– Good food, lovely ambience and prompt service but the prices are too high to go to for a casual meal.
