The Jungle Book (Hindi)- Movie Review

Roochster

the-jungle-book-posterAs children we’ve all seen ‘The Jungle Book’ and have a special liking for all the characters. Who can forget the song ‘Jungle jungle pata chala hai’ everytime the show came on TV? The Jungle Book as a film in 3D goes one step further and makes us relive our childhood in the most fun way.

Plot in short– Mowgli (Neel Sethi) has been brought up by wolves and a black panther (Om Puri) since childhood and living with them, he adapts to their way of living in the jungle. But how long can he stay? After all, there is Shere Khan, the tiger (Nana Patekar) who is out to kill him. Will he be able to escape from the dangerous Shere Khan and go to the land of humans?

The Good– The best thing about the film is the breathtaking visuals! The computer graphics artists definitely know their shit. The voice overs of Bagheera by Om Puri and Baloo by Irrfan Khan are superb! Little Mowgli played by Neel Sethi is so natural that one would never think he’s not from the jungle. I also thought that Kaa’s voice over by Priyanka Chopra was fantastic but very short. I wish we got to see more of Kaa. The story is perfect for the first part. It leaves you wanting for more. The flow of the screenplay is perfect. The songs are great to listen to. The Hindi version of Bare Necessities is not bad but at all.

The Not-so-good– I think Shere Khan has a huge part to play and Nana Patekar is excellent as an actor but somehow his voice just didn’t go with the majestic Tiger’s appearance and character. I would have liked to hear a deeper voice for Shere Khan. I can’t really think of anything else except that I wish this is the first of many more parts to come. If it doesn’t, me and Jungle Book’s many fans will be very upset.

Verdict– Go back in time and relive ‘The Jungle Book’ in 3D. This is way better than the series we used to love watching every Sunday on Doordarshan. Go! Go! Go!

Policegiri- Movie Review

Roochster

Policegiri movie posterInspired by Dabangg, Singham and Rowdy Rathore and since ‘cop films’ are ‘in’ these days, looks like director K.S.Ravikumar wanted to remake his Tamil hit ‘Saamy’ to create a buzz using the Munnabhai star. Sanjay Dutt is in jail at the right time. Atleast he won’t have to face the media asking him questions about why he would do a film like Policegiri. Gah! Here’s my review.

Sanjay Dutt plays a badass Deputy Police Commissioner- Rudra who makes sure things are in order in the town where’s he posted. He beats up the bad guys for peace and harmony among the people but at the same time also takes bribes from illegal shop owners, smugglers, etc. as long as people are not harmed. He has a girlfriend (Prachi Desai) who is proud of him until she finds out about him taking bribes from politician Nagori (Prakash Raj) who does everything bad to be in the good eyes of people.

Imagine the kind of writing when you have a dialogue like “Born in Mumbai ‘bought up’ in India” (for those who know the difference between bought and brought) and Sanjay Dutt saying it so confidently. The story is so weak that the screenplay and dialogues can barely hold up. There are a few funny scenes and seeti-bajao dialogues though but the rest is quite boring. Some action scenes are well choreographed and the editing of the action scenes is very good. Beautiful cinematography except for a stupid song which is shot entirely in front of a chroma screen and a few other scenes. The styling is ok, the make up is horrible! Prachi Desai looks caked up!

The music by Himesh Reshammiya is not cool and the background score doesn’t do much either.

Sanjay Dutt’s performance is not that great to be honest. Also, at the age of 53, he looks a lot older. So to play a 25-30 yr old guy in love doesn’t suit him at all. Prachi Desai’s character is also quite lame and she doesn’t contribute much to the film. This might be her worst film yet. Where’s the Prachi Desai we saw in Rock On? Sanjay Dutt and Prachi Desai’s chemistry is also non-existent. Prakash Raj is superb! I loved him in Singham and in this film too with the limited scope that he had, he’s done full justice. If it weren’t for him, the film would be a bigger flop. Rajpal Yadav along with Rajat Rawail are there for entertainment but are quite annoying. Om Puri does his best.

If Sanjay Dutt was out, I would throw him back in jail for doing this film. Waste of money!

Action Replayy- Movie Review

Roochster

To be very honest, I thought this movie would be awesome because it not only looked different but also because of the whole 70s theme. Lekin… itna disappointing it was! Haaaayye!

Action Replayy is supposed to be a light-hearted comedy about Kishan and Mala who’ve had a bad marriage since 35 years and their son Bunty tries to make it right by going back to the 70s when they first met and solves all the problems.

Getting down to what I thought about the movie… The story was lifted from a Gujarati play called Action Replay and before that a Hollywood movie called Back to the Future so there’s nothing mahaan about the story. I barely found myself feeling connected to the story in any way and rarely laughed at a “supposed-to-be” funny scene.

The setting is great though! The set designer and art director should be given due credit for making the setting look so real and colourful. It’s not an easy job so, kudos!

I wouldn’t say the same about the costumes, acting and everything else. Akshay Kumar looks like ulti and was even a little annoying with the bunny teeth and ugly glasses. I didn’t wanna look at him at all, forget the lallu boy acting. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks beautiful and I think she’s looking prettier by the day! Even as an old woman, she looked gorgeous!  She’s done a decent job actingwise. Aditya Roy Kapoor was good and Rannvijay Singh Singha was ok… they deserve a movie which brings out their real talent!

The music by Pritam is very ok except for 2 songs. ‘Zor ka jhatka’ is a great number and I toh start dancing only whenever I hear it! The song ‘Nakhre’ is perfect for the 70s and is pretty good too.

So, Action Replayy didn’t really work for me. It was well below average.
