Singham Returns- Movie Review

Apart from the message, the film was filled with violence, loudness and just didn’t have the grandeur or entertainment value as much as Singham.

Gori Tere Pyaar Mein- Movie Review

Gori-Tere-Pyaar-Mein-posterI can’t believe I thought Gori tere Pyaar mein would be be amazing to watch! From start to finish, this one’s nothing but nonsense and I have plenty of reasons to explain that. Here’s my review.

Sriram (Imran Khan) is a rich, spoilt brat who’s had many girlfriends in his past. He falls for Dia (Kareena Kapoor Khan) who wants to do good for others and make a difference to society. So basically they’re opposites and opposites attract, right? Well, maybe the Almighty had other plans. After being together for almost two years, they realise their life is going nowhere and so are their careers.  Realising this, they part ways. So Sriram succumbs to parental pressure and goes to see a girl his parents like. As crazy as it may sound, at their first meeting itself, she reveals that she she’s in love with someone else and a small conversation makes her realise that there’s a relationship he’s left behind. In order to get back to his lady love, he follows Dia to the village where she’s staying at and helping people. Will love make it through this time around?

First things first. The story is absolute rubbish! What the hell was the writer thinking?! There is no logic to the entire premise or either of the characters. Imran Khan plays a guy who has no life, no work or ambition. He lives off his father’s money and surprisingly there are families that are ready for their daughter to marry such a loser. Kareena Kapoor’s character on the other hand makes little sense. So she’s a girl who lands up at any social gathering and raises her voice against injustice. Apart from that, she has no life or friends. There is barely anything in the story to keep you hooked on especially with such a weak script and screenplay. Director Punit Malhotra seems to have made the film for the heck of it that too just cause he got two good looking actors. The actors alone aren’t enough. Look-wise, yes, the visuals appear beautiful and rich thanks to the cinematography by Mahesh Limaye and the stylists and make up artists.

There’s nothing to boast about the background score or music but I do like the song ‘Tooh’ and find myself doing a little jig everytime I hear it.

Performance-wise, Kareena Kapoor Khan is good but not as good as she’s been in her earlier films. She actually goes a level down by doing such a film. Imran Khan is doing nothing like he’s never done before. Looks out of place in the film, doesn’t look like the hero even with his chest hair showing in every frame (which by the way was not attractive at all!) He looks more like Kareena’s younger brother. They lack chemistry. Anupam Kher with his small role is good but doesn’t create an impact due to the dull script.

As a film, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein fails to impress and I’m quite disappointed.

Satyagraha- Movie Review

satyagraha-movie-posterPrakash Jha’s films are always hard hitting dealing with political issues or issues related to the general public. Satyagraha is no different and we got that from the title and trailer itself. So how was it? You’re just about to find out.

Dwarka Anand(Amitabh Bachchan) loses his son Akhikesh, an engineer in a road accident. A politician looking out for his own reputation in public promises a sum of 25 lakhs as compensation for the mishap. As Akhilesh’s wife Sumitra (Amrita Rao) tries to follow up with the government officials, she realises that none of them are really bothered and are only heating up the chairs sitting in offices. Her father-in-law Dwarka decides to do something about the issue and slaps an official and gets imprisoned. To fight for their rights, Akhilesh’s close friend Manav (Ajay Devgan) and journalist Yasmin (Kareena Kapoor Khan) form a team along with wanna-be politician Arjun (Arjun Rampal) and involve social media and the public. How much of a fight can they put up against the strong politicians and corrupt officials?

The subject is powerful. What lacks is the screenplay. The film drags most of the time because of poor editing too.  Sadly Prakash Jha’s magic doesn’t entirely work this time. I found myself getting distracted by my phone’s constant beeps too often which is obviously not a good thing. Director Prakash Jha went a little too far with the political clichés which we’ve seen the most in his films. I understand that he wanted to stress on the issues that have affected India the most in the recent past, corruption being the most popular, but he forgot to give importance to the script. I would have liked to see less drama internally and more about the issue the movie talks about.

Great work on the costumes and art direction. The cinematography by Sachin Krishn is good in parts. There’s good use of light. The background music works well but weak music and I really didn’t get the point of an item number. The only song that stands out is Raghupati Raghav Rajaram which is not original as we know.

What works for the film are the performances. Amitabh Bachchan is top notch. Even though he underplays the character, he’s done a fantastic job as an actor. Ajay Devgan is brilliant and looks great. Kareena Kapoor looks gorgeous with her strong eye make up and is good. Amrita Rao looks nice but as an actress doesn’t make an impact. Arjun Rampal looked out of place with acting that is just ok. Manoj Bajpayee as the corrupt politician is perfect for the role.

As a film Satyagraha could have been outstanding with its relevance in today’s times but doesn’t quite impress as much or make you feel a strong emotion while watching it. I’d say Satyagraha is a bit of a let down.

Talaash- Movie Review

My mind has been blown! Once again, Aamir Khan proves that he’s not just doing movies to make money or remain famous. He’s genuinely interested in making movies that move you or make you think. With Talaash, he restores all the faith we have in good Indian cinema. Read more.

A popular actor mysteriously meets with an accident, falls into the sea and drowns. Aamir Khan, the cop in charge of this case, with his personal issues tries to solve the mystery and find the person behind the actor’s death. Kareena Kapoor plays a prostitute and Rani Mukherji plays Aamir’s wife. Will not reveal anymore.

Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti have written a very clever and gripping plot that you can’t possibly predict until the very end. That is beautifully executed in a mind numbing suspense thriller film. I also think that a story like this could be a brilliant book! The cinematography is outstanding and rich, especially the scene shot in the water with Kareena Kapoor and Aamir Khan. The screenplay and dialogues are good. The production design, make up, hair is all wonderfully styled. All the characters are well defined and the build up to the climax is very well paced in the second half of the movie. Yes, the first half is a bit slow but chalo, maaf kiya because it all comes together and makes sense in the end!

Aamir Khan is fantastic throughout the film and doesn’t for a second make you feel like you’re watching Aamir Khan the star! He’s completely ghusaod himself into the skin of the character he plays. Kareena Kapoor looks stunning and plays her role with a tremendous amount of confidence and ease. Rani Mukherji, even with barely any make up, convinces you well that she’s a depressed housewife longing for love from her husband. I also thought Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Shernaz Patel acted very well.

The music and background score by Ram Sampat is noteworthy. ‘Jee Le Zara’ sung by Vishal Dadlani has a lot of soul, ‘Muskaanein jhoothi hain’ sung by Suman Shridhar has that thriller edge to it and is sung with lots of style, ‘Jiya laage na’ sung by Sona Mohapatra and Ravindra Upadhyay is my personal favourite! Javed Akhtar’s lyrics are beautiful and meaningful as most times.

I left the theatre with lots of questions in my head, confusion, goosebumps and awe. To me it is a superb film that cannot be missed!

Heroine- Movie Review

Heroine was one film I just had to watch because the subject was so interesting. But the film was so disappointing! Here’s why.

Heroine is about this superstar who can’t act, much like some of our very own Bollywood stars. She’s hot and gets endorsements and movies just because she’s a star. Her love life sucks and as a result she’s always moody and not the first choice when it comes to working with other actors and directors. A PR person comes in who helps her reach a better stage in her career only to be let down because of Kareena’s erratic mood swings and what she does with them. And of course, Madhur Bhandarkar style we see various phases of a ‘heroine’ and those around her in the industry.

Ok now, what was Madhur Bhandarkar thinking?! Yes Chandni bar, Page 3 and Fashion worked because somewhere they were realistic and gave an insight into a world we all want to know about. Heroine is nothing but negative all through! Kareena Kapoor plays a star who has no friends even outside the industry, she gets big films like Katrina Kaif based on looks, she smokes and drinks a lot, she’s moody, she’s insecure about love and even career, she’s had a bad past and what not. So basically there’s nothing positive about her except the fact that she looks good. Madhur Bhandarkar must really hate people in Bollywood to show what he’s shown in the film. All make up men and designers are gay, a small budget film director has that unkempt look and is always more respected as compared to other directors, the main heroine has no friends only, everyone in the industry is a compulsive smoker… how many more clichés ya! To top it all, there’s a lameass ‘item number’ called Halkat Jawani which falls flat on its face because it’s as bad as the songs in his earlier movie ‘Page 3’. Remember ‘Kuwan ma doob jaaoongi’?

So yeah, Madhur Bhandarkar is somehow losing his tag of a ‘realistic film maker’. Heroine is incredibly exaggerated and negative, as if made to remove his bhadaas on some people in the Bollywood film industry. All the actors except for Kareena Kapoor look like they’re from the 90s and even dress like that. The story takes too long to end!

Kareena Kapoor is obviously the star of the film. She looks great and has even acted well but we’ve seen Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut doing the same thing in Fashion, Bipasha Basu in Raaz 3 and Vidya Balan, who was so much more realistic and better in The Dirty Picture if we talk about recent similar films.  Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda have done a good job even though they had small roles. Mugdha Godse said, “Shits!” which sums up her acting skills and how she talks in real life.  Lillette Dubey, Shahana Goswami, Ranvir Shorey and Divya Dutta are superb! Other than that, there are just a bunch of dumb actors excited to work with Madhur Bhandarkar.

Honestly, there could have been so much more to make Heroine a sure shot superhit but Madhur Bhandarkar screwed it up with stereotyping almost everything and creating a film full of negativity and the bad side of Bollywood. Not cool!

Agent Vinod- Movie Review

The writer is confused, the director is confused, the actors are trying to act smart thinking it’s a James Bond movie, Saif (producer) and Kareena are honeymooning all over the world at the expense of the film which means you must NOT waste your hard earned money watching it and rather just log on to youtube and watch the songs ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’ and ‘Pungi’.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu- Movie Review

I was really really looking forward to watching this romantic comedy especially ‘cause Kareena was in it and Karan Johar had produced it. Is it the perfect movie to watch with your Valentine? You’re just about to find out!

As we’ve all heard, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is inspired by the movie ‘What Happens in Vegas’ but I felt it was also similar to ‘Just Married’, ‘Wake up Sid’, ‘I hate Love Stories’, ‘Break ke baad’ and many more such movies. A guy and a girl, get drunk one night and when they wake up the next morning, they’re married. Now all they need to do is get an annulment of their marriage. But, during this period, love comes in the way and things take a turn.

I honestly expected better from this film. Even though it’s barely a 2 hours film, the pace is slow and gets a little pointless. It could easily pass off as a one hour episode of one of the popular comedy sitcoms.  So much could have been done in those 2 hours! I’m not saying that what’s there is bad; I’m just saying that there could have been scenes which would add to making the story interesting. But I loved the camera work, costumes, art direction and make up.

Actingwise, I think Imran Khan has done a good job. He’s definitely getting better at acting and is also getting movies that suit him. Kareena Kapoor is good but too much smiling got a little annoying, even though she looks gorgeous!

Amit Trivedi as a music director has been pretty promising in the past. I wonder what went wrong here. Except for the title track, I wouldn’t care to listen to any of the other tracks.

Overall, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is not a chick flick I’d recommend, especially if you’re going to watch it with your Valentine. Maybe my expectations were too high but this one’s just ok.

Ra.One- Movie Review

I wasn’t really dying to watching Ra.One until I saw Taran Adarsh’s 4.5 stars. Since then, I’d been super excited to watch it! How authentic was his review this time?

Shahrukh Khan plays this video game scientist who creates two characters for his newest video game. His son likes villains better so the bad one Ra.One (Raavan) is more powerful than the ‘good one’ G.One. His son plays the game and loves it but does not complete level 2 because of which Ra.One, jumps to life and is out to kill him and everyone who comes in between. And then comes G.One, the superhero apparently who’ll do everything he can to protect Shahrukh’s son and wife (Kareena Kapoor).

So, where does Chhamak Chhalo fit in? Don’t ask me man! Shahrukh Khan’s honestly tried too hard to make the superhero film of the century, but he fails. He’s not a superhero from any angle! He can’t even play a south Indian scientist to say the least! More on that later.

The start was horrible and made me think “WTF is this!”, but luckily it got better. Only, not better enough. There were interesting parts, yes but there were lots of boring parts too. The story is predictable which is fine, but it’s so badly written! There’s not enough drama, action, build up of story and emotions. The graphics are superb, especially the whole C.S.T thing and I wish I had seen it in 3d to experience the real thing lekin utna kaafi thodi hai pichar ko bachaane ke liye? The music by Vishal & Shekhar is decent- Chhamak Chhalo steals the show!

Coming to the performances, as I said earlier, SRK is so disappointing. He might be good as Rahul, Raj and Don but being a superhero is so not his thing. In fact, I’m confused, is he supposed to be a superhero or a robot?! He just can’t carry it off like apna Krrish a.k.a Hrithik Roshan who looks and acts like a superhero or Rajnikant who was super entertaining as Chitti the Robot. Kareena Kapoor looks beautiful as always and was good as the wife even though she looks twice as young as Shahrukh. The kid acted pretty well too. The show stealer however was Arjun Rampal, surprisingly. He was very good as Ra.One and looked evil too.

I’d just like to say that Taran Adarsh is stupid and does not have a conscience so do not bother reading his fake review. Shahrukh Khan fans will still go for it but others, please remember I warned you! Ra.One might seem like a lot of fun but all that glitters is not gold. This Diwali, go buy real gold instead! 😛

Bodyguard- Movie Review

I had a feeling I would love this movie after watching the song ‘I love you’ but I had my doubts considering I didn’t think Wanted, Dabangg and Ready were that great. Does Bodyguard fall in my category of “ok” films? You’re just about to find out!

Salman Khan (Lovely Singh) is a bodyguard. He’s protective, quick, well-trained but a little innocent. As an assignment he has to protect Kareena Kapoor (Divya) from some goons. He is indebted to her father Raj Babbar (Sartaj Rana) as he had saved his life when he was still in his mother’s stomach. So he goes all out in making sure Divya’s safe at all times. But Divya doesn’t like this wall around her all the time and thinks of a way to divert his attention. She calls him up as a girl named Chhaya and pretends to be in love with him. As days go by, he finds himself falling in love with her. To her surprise, Divya realizes, she’s in love with him for real. And then begins an interesting second half where you wont have even an inkling as to what will happen next.

Coming to what I thought of the film… The story is simple and makes you think that until you reach the end where everything changes. It’s a very different pre-climax and you just wont expect it. I wished it would just be the predictable ending but its not and that’s what makes Bodyguard different. While Dabangg, Ready and Wanted were the typical action comedies, Bodyguard gives the story a little more importance and is treated with a little more love. The director Siddique has done a great job! I just felt that the jokes were quite sad in some parts and a better job could have been done with the dialogues.

Salman Khan is my hero, our hero. I don’t think I stopped smiling throughout the movie! He’s just so awesome that I could look at him for hours! There couldn’t have been a better bodyguard! From the action scenes to the romantic scenes, Salman sticks to his character and makes it very real except that he’s supposed to be a little dumb, which does not come across too well. But he manages to make my heart skip a beat everytime I see him on screen.  Ok getting to Kareena Kapoor. I think she’s shaped herself really well as an actress through the years and is very likable. She looks gorgeous and her eyes are beautiful! She was great as Divya. Among the other actors, the guy who plays Tsunami was very annoying! I just felt like slapping him! I even got sick of reading the lines on his tshirts. Totally pointless! Everyone else was ok. I don’t think Mahesh Manjrekar and Asrani really needed to be there in the film at all. There could have been any other random actors in their place. Katrina in a ‘friendly appearance’ is useless and doesn’t add anything to the song!

Now the music of the film I think is decent. I really like the song ‘I love you’ and even ‘TerI meri’ is melodious.

All in all, Bodyguard is an entertainer and a must watch for all Salman fans! I toh loved it and now I love Salman Khan so much more! PAISA VASOOL ENTERTAINMENT!
