Bang Bang- Movie Review

Bang Bang-PosterI confess! I was super excited to watch Bang Bang only because of the star cast and of course because it was going to be a typical Bollywood film! Was it worth the excitement? Read on.

Plot in short– Harleen (Katrina Kaif) is a bank receptionist and bored with her life. In order to find herself true love, she sets herself up on a date with the help of a site called ‘ Cut to entry of Rajveer (Hrithik Roshan), her date and the thief who stole the Kohinoor diamond and has people chasing him everywhere. Harleen must make a choice. She can either go back to her routine, dull life or be with this crazy man and travel the world with him and his escapades.

The Good– Well, the cinematography definitely tops the charts. Glossy, rich and sharp, the visuals are stunning! I thought the performances were decent but not wow! I must admit though that both Hrithik and Katrina looked droolworthy! They look great on screen! Even the styling, hair and make up is amazing! Beautiful locations too! So I’d say lookwise, the film is bang on! The music and background score is not bad either. There are barely any songs in the film but the songs ‘Tu meri’ and ‘Meherbaan’ are foot tapping and melodious.

The Not-so-good– Bang Bang is clearly a mix of a number of action flicks that have released in the recent past such as Dhoom, Ek Tha Tiger, A Holiday, etc. There goes the originality. The direction by Siddharth Anand is very ok. Sadly it has to rely on the weak screenplay which is nothing but a sequence of chase scenes. Keep an eye out for all the ads you get to see in the film such as Pizza Hut, Mountain Dew, Johnson Tiles, etc. which didn’t have to be so ‘in-your-face’.

Verdict– Overall, Bang Bang is nothing but a time pass film which is high on glamour and low on substance. It may be a treat for all the Hrithik, Katrina, Barbie and Ken fans though.

Fugly- Movie Review

Fugly is F******BORING because almost everything about it (acting, screenplay, direction, editing, songs) is below average except for Jimmy Sheirgill who wins the film one star out of five.

Darr @ The Mall- Movie Review

Darr @ the mall posterWho would watch a movie called ‘Darr @ The Mall’ man?! Ummm, that’s right. Me. Why would I want to watch it, you ask? Well, cause I LOVE horror movies. How much did I love this? Or did I?

The plot– Asia’s largest mall is ready for inauguration, although there’s a myth surrounding the mall. There have been nine accidental deaths in the mall and the owners are sick of the stories about the mall being haunted. So they decide to re-launch their mall in a grand way. This is when the lead hero of the film Jimmy Shergill (Vishnu Sharma) enters. He is an ex-army officer but lends up becoming the chief security officer of the Amity Mall. On the opening eve the owner of the mall, Mr. Manchanda calls a press conference and to dispel the fears announces that he would spend a night at the Mall with the board of directors. Manchanda and his cronies step into the Mall to spend a night and this to Manchanda is a big business strategy. Manchanda and group are not the only ones to be inside the Mall this night. Manchanda’s daughter Ahana and her friends make their way inside, as wells as Vishnu, the chief of security at the Mall who has a past that haunts him. Facts come clear only by the end when circumstances throw Vishnu, Manchanda and Ahana together. Their stories connect and lead to a mysterious past.

The good– The only good in the film is Jimmy Shergill. He’s a good actor even though he stars in crappy films like this. I’d say the concept of a mall being haunted is scary and a good idea but it really could have had a better story and screenplay.

The bad– Where do I start? Should I talk about how badly written the script is or should I describe the terrible direction. I can’t believe the same director of Ragini MMS- Pawan Kirpalani made this mess! The entire film is quite predictable and so badly written that you’d want to walk out of the theatre after watching the first 15 minutes itself. I was restless throughout the film but still sat through it. The stylist has done a bad job with the actress’ costumes. The cinematography is just ok that too in parts. The computer graphics are bad too! The make up for the ghosts and children acting as ghosts is as bad as the make up in Jaani Dushman. Like a Ram Gopal Verma film, the background score involves children singing, doors opening and loud bangs but this is actually worse than a Ram Gopal Verma film so just imagine. The music is by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy. What a waste! Even the item number by the firang fails to do much. To be honest, I didn’t get scared watching the film at all.

Verdict– So there aren’t too many good horror films in Bollywood and otherwise but this one is worse than bad! Do not waste your time or money on this one!

Bullett Raja- Movie Review

Bullett-Raja posterBullett Raja did not look exciting to me when I saw the trailer and as a movie too, it barely entertained. For some reason, Saif Ali Khan to star in a film like this just does not make sense to me. Also, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s style of film making may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Saheb Biwi aur Gangster and its sequel and  Paan Singh Tomar may have worked but Bullett Raja clearly doesn’t. Here’s why.

What’s the story like? Well, let me try this. Raja (Saif Ali Khan) and Rudra (Jimmy Shergill) turn into gangster best friends in Uttar Pradesh and get into a political trap. Then it’s all about a power struggle, hidden ambitions and revenge. In the middle of it all, Raja finds love in Mitali (Sonakshi Sinha) who encourages him to fight what he’s fighting.

I can’t begin to tell you how bored I was while watching the film. Even the people in the theatre were watching it quietly. Not a sound, not a ‘taali’ from anyone especially when you expect it for a movie with a theme like this. The screenplay and dialogues do not do justice to the story which itself is nothing great. Tigmanshu Dhulia is a skilled director who does his best at directing but doesn’t succeed much because of the weak script. There isn’t much to boast about. The styling is ok. Saif Ali Khan looks too wanna-be-ish with the tikka and bad hair.

The cinematography by P.S. Vinod is good. The action scenes look alright. The background score by Sajid-Wajid is very effective while the music is really bad. I can’t name even one song that I liked.

Saif Ali Khan as Bullett Raja is not convincing at all in terms of his look or the way he acts. In fact, Jimmy Shergill who plays the second lead is better and more realistic. Jimmy Shergill’s role is better too. Saif just looks stupid prancing around like a wanna-be Gunda. Sonakshi Sinha looks beautiful even though her role is pointless as are most characters in the film. There’s no scope for her to show her acting skills. Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover and Ravi Kissen who are actors of high caliber are reduced to doing roles that barely count. Vidyut Jamwal who was last seen in Commando is not bad at all. As a cop, he does justice and also looks the part. Unfortunately he had a very short role in Bullett Raja. Chunky Pandey too is barely there (Thank God!)

So, yes Bullett Raja is not my idea of a good film and is not entertaining at all. Go ahead and miss it.

Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns- Movie Review

Saheb-Biwi-Aur-Gangster-Returns-posterSaheb Biwi aur Gangster has returned and how!

The sequel goes one step ahead of the prequel and has an independent story keeping the 3 central characters in mind. Irrfan Khan plays Soha Ali Khan’s love interest. He wants to kill Saheb (Jimmy Sheirgill) whose grandfather had killed Irrfan Khan’s grandfather in some war. Mahie Gill is the ‘Biwi’ of the crippled ‘Saheb’ and is mostly drunk throughout and wants to finally have her own identity but needs a mastermind to help her. That mastermind turns out to be the ‘Gangster’ (Irrfan Khan), Saheb’s enemy.

Tigmanshu Dhulia and his team have outdone themselves with the sequel which is better than it’s prequel which seems to be a rarity in Bollywood films. The way the story unfolds is interesting and gripping. The setting is real, rustic and not over-the-top as they show in most movies. The styling is also tastefully done to suit the characters. The cinematography is good in some parts and bad in some.

Jimmy Sheirgill is a delight to watch in the film. I think he’s also extremely underrated and should get his due by doing more interesting roles. Mahie Gill is a little annoying with her forever drunken voice. She looks really good in the movie though. Irrfan Khan is natural and effortless. Soha Ali Khan is superb! I think it’s her best performance yet and she too should get her due by doing films with substance. The supporting cast is good too except for Pravesh Rana who should stick to doing reality shows.

The music of the film can barely be spoken about except for the song ‘Jugni’ which is not new anyway. Sandeep Chowta was briliant once upon a time but now should stick to background scores which he’s very good at.

Overall, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns is entertaining and I enjoyed it more than the first one.

Dangerous Ishhq- Movie Review

An idea of the 90s, with an actress of the 90s clearly doesn’t work in 2012 even if it’s in 3D, especially if the movie is called ‘Dangerous Ishhq’ with reincarnation as the main subject and music by Himesh Reshammiya.

Saheb Biwi aur Gangster- Movie Review

I hadn’t seen a single trailer of this movie and went for it aise hi that too at one of the shadiest theatres in Mumbai- New Empire. Ha! Read on!

So basically, Jimmy Shergill is the angry-young- Saheb who has a slightly twisted Biwi (Mahie Gill). They are husband and wife but don’t exactly share that kind of relationship as he’s busy banging another woman who he says is his ‘aadat’. They live in an old palace-like building but they live off his mother’s ‘jaaydaat’ and a dirty hand in politics. He has enemies and among them a Gangster named Babloo (Randeep Hooda) is hired to kill the saheb. Things turn around when Babloo and the biwi start having their own thing going and develop feelings for each other.

The movie was quite gripping even though it seemed a little long. I’d say men, more than women will like it. It has that element in it which just makes it a for-a-guy movie if you know what I mean. The setting is very real and I loved the haveli they’ve shot at. So beautiful! The cinematography, dialogues and direction hold the film very well together making it interesting to watch.

Performance-wise I felt all 3 lead actors were great! After watching Mahie Gill in ‘Not a love story’ she looks 100 times better in this! Jimmy Shergill and Randeep Hooda I feel are two actors who don’t ever overdo acting. They’re very real and convincing in their roles, which is a good thing.

I just felt that the songs were not needed at all. Yes, the Jugni track is brilliant and was even placed well in the movie but apart from that, none of the songs really should have been there! That kind of took away from the flow of the film. Also, I felt that the bold scenes were ok but they sort of overdid them.

So, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster is an above average movie and men will enjoy watching it more than women.

Game- Movie Review

Abhishek Bachchan for me is one of the best actors in Bollywood. He has so much potential it’s not even funny! And that’s one of the reasons I had to watch this movie! For him.

So basically, Game is a thriller. The main plot is that Sarah Jane is killed and Anupam Kher (her father) makes Abhishek Bachchan, Jimmy Shergill, Boman Irani and Shahana Goswami meet him at his private island in Greece to solve the murder mystery and punish the guilty. But since it’s a thriller, there are mysteries that unfold every few minutes and swerve you away from the main plot to make it seem twisted.

Twisted it is. They’ve tried to make it like an Abbas-Mastaan movie, filled with interesting twists but all we got to see was annoying sub-plots throughout! The actors have all done a good job and tried to look convincing with whatever they could give to the story but it just does not seem like a “Game”. I loved the locations and the cinematography! The background score reminded me of Inception’s. The music by Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy is just ok. I just felt that they could have made this a huge hit if there was something different about it. The trailers made it look awesome but it just didn’t live up to those expectations. Game was just ok for me.

Tanu Weds Manu- Movie Review

I was expecting this one to be a nice and sweet romantic comedy… Well, read further to know what I thought of it.

R. Madhavan (Manu), a doctor from London comes to India to find himself a wife and he meets Kangana Ranaut (Tanu), a rebellious girl from Kanpur who smokes, drinks and has a gunda boyfriend (Jimmy Shergill).  As strange as it may sound, when Manu goes to meet Tanu at her place, she’s drunk and passed out. Manu still looks at her face and says yes for marriage. Basically love at first sight. Only later he realizes that she loves someone else and so he helps them get together. Does Tanu wed Manu then?

The story is unoriginal and very predictable. It’s a mix of movies like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Jab We Met, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, etc. But the dialogues in some scenes do make you crack up.

The pigeon with blown-up lips (Kangana) luckily doesn’t have too many dialogues in the movie…her voice is super screechy but she looks beautiful. I really liked Madhavan. He’s simple, subtle and endearing. Jimmy Shergill, who plays a negative character, is actually a pretty good actor. Where has he been all this while?

The music is not that great except for the song which everyone loves- ‘Sadi Galli’ but sadly, that is not shown fully. In all honesty, I thought it was an average movie overall. It had the potential to be way better!
