Tanu weds Manu Returns- Movie Review

Tanu-Weds-Manu-Returns-PosterVery rarely would you find sequels better than the first part. Tanu Weds Manu has returned and how! Let me explain.

Plot in short– Tanuja (Kangana Ranaut) and Manoj (R Madhavan) have been married, maybe not happily since 4 years. With disagreements, senseless arguments and fewer sparks both want to end their marriage to live a more peaceful life. A heated up fight at the psychiatrist makes Manu end up in a mental hospital while Tanu escapes to Kanpur. Feeling slightly bad for her husband, she calls his friend Pappi (Deepak Dobriyal) to come rescue him. Once back home, she goes back to being the rebellious, notorious Tanu who would walk out in a towel while a boy’s family has come home to meet her sister. During her stay at her family home, she reconnects with one time boyfriend Raja Awasthi (Jimmy Sheirgill) and also basks in the attention she gets from a new lawyer friend- Chintu (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub) who’s been staying without paying rent at her family home. Meanwhile, Manu comes to India and meets a Tanu look-alike Kusum (Kangana Ranaut) who is a state level athlete from Haryana. Within a couple of weeks he falls for her and is ready to get married. What will happen to Tanu and Manu’s marriage?

The Good– I have to say I enjoyed every minute of the film. Not once did I get distracted by my phone’s constant vibrations (Whatsapp messages). The pace is perfect and the very well written dialogue and screenplay by Himanshu Sharma add the raw desi masala mixed with real cinema making it juicy and flavourful in one go. Director Aanand L. Rai expertly weaves his magic in combining it with great music, styling, production design, cinematography and acting. The song ‘Banno tera swagger’ is a definite favourite. Kangana Ranaut shines in her performance as both Tanu and Kusum, making a clear demarcation between both characters. She looks gorgeous! R Madhavan in all his subtlety is superb! He has great screen presence. Supporting actors Deepak Dobriyal as Pappi is a live wire, very entertaining, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub as Chintu is good, Jimmy Sheirgill is Raja Awasthi is charming. All the other actors too made their presence felt, adding value to the film.

The Not- so-good– I didn’t want it to end. I wish they make a part three.

Verdict– I loved the film and would highly recommend it to everyone. Two hours of pure desi entertainment- music, drama, humour and a lot of masala. MUST WATCH!

Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns- Movie Review

Saheb-Biwi-Aur-Gangster-Returns-posterSaheb Biwi aur Gangster has returned and how!

The sequel goes one step ahead of the prequel and has an independent story keeping the 3 central characters in mind. Irrfan Khan plays Soha Ali Khan’s love interest. He wants to kill Saheb (Jimmy Sheirgill) whose grandfather had killed Irrfan Khan’s grandfather in some war. Mahie Gill is the ‘Biwi’ of the crippled ‘Saheb’ and is mostly drunk throughout and wants to finally have her own identity but needs a mastermind to help her. That mastermind turns out to be the ‘Gangster’ (Irrfan Khan), Saheb’s enemy.

Tigmanshu Dhulia and his team have outdone themselves with the sequel which is better than it’s prequel which seems to be a rarity in Bollywood films. The way the story unfolds is interesting and gripping. The setting is real, rustic and not over-the-top as they show in most movies. The styling is also tastefully done to suit the characters. The cinematography is good in some parts and bad in some.

Jimmy Sheirgill is a delight to watch in the film. I think he’s also extremely underrated and should get his due by doing more interesting roles. Mahie Gill is a little annoying with her forever drunken voice. She looks really good in the movie though. Irrfan Khan is natural and effortless. Soha Ali Khan is superb! I think it’s her best performance yet and she too should get her due by doing films with substance. The supporting cast is good too except for Pravesh Rana who should stick to doing reality shows.

The music of the film can barely be spoken about except for the song ‘Jugni’ which is not new anyway. Sandeep Chowta was briliant once upon a time but now should stick to background scores which he’s very good at.

Overall, Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns is entertaining and I enjoyed it more than the first one.

Special 26- Movie Review

Special 26 posterNot many heist movies can have the kind of effect ‘Special 26’ has on you. This one’s a gem in Bollywood’s treasure chest. Here’s why.

So what’s the movie about? Well, in 1987, a man robbed jewellery worth lakhs from Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai by hiring 28 recruits who applied to work with the CBI. He claimed he was from the CBI and made the shop owner switch off all the cameras, phones and produce cash and jewellery for inspection. In thirty minutes, while the recruits searched for vital information, he walked out of the shop without being suspected by anyone. Special 26 is based on that event.

I must salute Neeraj Pandey, the director of the film for making a film on this incident. He is pure genius. The story is fast paced and gripping. You might feel a little restless in the first half but the second half makes you understand why that was important. The setting is so real that you’ll go back to the 1980s with all the Marutis and Ambassadors, the old school telephones, Vimal ads, etc. The background music is superb! Sanjoy Chowdhury, take a bow! Bobby Singh, the cinematographer’s done a good job with the camera work.

Coming to the performances… Anupam Kher is brilliant, especially in the scene where he’s caught and has to confess to Manoj Bajpayee; Akshay Kumar is good, Manoj Bajpayee is very good as a tough CBI officer,  Jimmy Sheirgill and Divya Dutta don’t have much to do but still make an impact. Kajal Aggarwal just had to look pretty as Akshay Kumar’s love interest and she did it well.

There’s not much music in the movie luckily but I really like the first song that plays when they introduce Kajal Aggarwal.

If you’re wondering what to do this weekend, watch Special 26 and I promise you, you wont be disappointed.
