Life of Pi- Movie Review

Roochster

I haven’t read the book…yet. The movie has inspired me to. Here’s why.

Pi’s father decides to move from Pondicherry to Canada for a better life. He owns a zoo and supports a family of 4 including Pi. They decide to go by sea and encounter a deadly storm. The only survivors- Pi, an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena and a tiger find themselves in a lifeboat. In barely any time, the tiger eats up all the animals except for Pi who strives to save himself from being eaten. As the food and water supplies on the lifeboat get over, Pi thinks of various ways to keep himself and the tiger alive in a beautiful adventurous journey.

Ang Lee is pure genius! The way he’s woven the entire story into a blanket of beautiful visuals and storytelling makes it a film that everyone will love. Yes it is slightly slow, especially in the first half but then you forget all about the pace as you’re busy taking in the beauty of imagination and Pi’ journey with Richard Parker- the tiger. I’ve seen the movie Cast Away starring Tom Hanks which was fantastic! I think this one’s pretty similar but goes up by several notches for sure. What makes it even better are the breathtaking 3D effects and the cinematography which play a major role in making the journey worth it.

Coming to the performances… Suraj Sharma who plays Pi for most of the film speaks the unspoken. His performance makes you feel what he feels. I think that’s the biggest compliment I can give him. Irrfan Khan and Tabu don’t have big roles in the film but still deliver beautifully as usual. All the other actors, including the animals, especially the tiger contribute largely to make the film what it is.

On the whole, Life of Pi is an inspiring film that must be watched by everyone! Do not watch it at home! Thank you Yann Martel for writing such an amazing story, a masterpiece and Ang Lee for making it come to life.

Skyfall- Movie Review

Roochster

When a Bollywood film hero dies and comes to life again we say, “That’s utter crap!” When it happens in Hollywood, it’s got to be James Bond and it’s miraculously awesome! Here’s what I thought of Skyfall.

So it starts off with Daniel Craig chasing this guy all around only to get shot by his own team and so it seems like he’s dead. But how can James Bond die, right? So he comes to life again to find the person whose run away with confidential information about terrorists organisations from a murdered MI6 agent. Now that leads him to the guy who was an agent for M but was imprisoned by the Chinese and so he turns a villain and wants to punish M and kill her. You think that can happen with Bond around?

So, I didn’t quite understand the story much because I probably was more engrossed watching the chase and action sequences which are superb, just by the way and hence read that bit up on Wikipedia. Sam Mendes, the director and the cinematographer have created a visually brilliant film. The pace is really good except for in the second half when you’ll feel that the movie is a bit of a drag and it could have been edited better.

I had last seen Pierce Brosnan as Bond and thought he was the best there could ever be but Daniel Craig is very very good and has something about him that convinces you that he is indeed Bond, James Bond. Javier Bardem also is a great villain and Judi Dench as M is old but plays an important role very well. The performances coupled with the thrills and background music make Skyfall quite the entertainer and a must watch, especially for all the James Bond fans.

Ted- Movie Review

Roochster

Entertaining and crudely witty with fun performances by Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and a teddy (Seth MacFarlane) that looks and seems so believable and a story that might feel slightly long but yet well spun, Ted is refreshingly nice.

Arbitrage- Movie Review

Roochster

Even though the trailer gave out most of the movie, I just had to watch it because it looked so good and of course, Richard Gere is in it.

So, basically Richard Gere plays a billionaire who’s broke but needs to put up an image in society that he’s not and try to sell off his company. He’s married with kids and has an artist girlfriend. Things take a turn when a careless road accident kills his girlfriend.

The plot is meaty and interesting but somehow the editor could have done a better job with the cuts. It felt a little longer than it should have been. The cinematography, direction and the look of the entire film is sharp. The build up to the main story takes a little while but once it does, it definitely gets better. The characters are also well defined.

People and critics have said that it’s Richard Gere’s Oscar-winning performance and what not but I don’t agree. He’s good but not so mahaan also! He looks super charming even at his age! Susan Sarandon is a great actress but looks rather old and to cover up she’s worn super padded bras to make her look “young and voluptuous” which doesn’t help at all.

Overall, Arbitrage is good. Could have been shorter but good nonetheless.

Ice Age 4- Movie Review

Roochster

I am a huge fan of the Ice Age movies and it goes without saying that I was really looking forward to watch the fourth movie of the epic animated series.

So basically, Scrat, the squirrel is responsible for a continental drift because of which our favourite characters- Sid, Manny and Diego find themselves having an adventurous journey across the ocean on an iceberg slab (like a ship) and meeting some very interesting creatures on their way.

Top class animation as always, some really funny moments but  some of the new characters weren’t as lovable or endearing as the ones in the previous movies. Yes, Sid’s granny was fun to watch and so was Manny’s daughter ‘Peaches’ but otherwise, the pirates gave the movie a dark shade which I didn’t like too much.

So, Ice Age 4, Continental Drift sort of drifted a bit how awesome its been so far. This one was definitely a step lower when compared to the other ones and I think it’ll be safe to say that you can watch it at home instead of going to a theatre.

The Dark Knight Rises- Movie Review

Roochster

After months of waiting, the Dark Knight (Batman) finally rose and that too more than once in the movie! Haha here’s my review of the biggest movie of the year!

Christopher Nolan’s third movie and final in the Batman trilogy is about the Dark Knight’s comeback. After the death of District Attorney Harvey Dent, Bruce Wayne (Batman) takes a backseat and stops making a difference to society as Batman because he takes the blame of Dent’s death. But Bane, a scary looking masked terrorist is on the loose and he’s planting bombs all over Gotham city. And so, the Dark Knight rises.

The man that makes the trilogy so good is Christopher Nolan. No offence to the actors and the others, but this director is the genius behind the legend ‘The Dark Knight’. He’s in a way given Batman a new look, a new image without taking away the image of our childhood superhero.  His thought process is great and he makes any film look like magic. I loved the effects, the cinematogprahy and the look of the film. However, the editing could have been crisper because 2 hrs and 45 minutes is a little too long and to be honest, I did get a little restless in the second half of the movie even though the first half was superb. The build up to the part where we finally see Batman is great! I just had to hoot when I saw Batman on screen, that was something everyone was eagerly waiting for!

Christian Bale as Batman is perfect! His physique, height and acting make him the best choice! Anne Hathway came as a pleasant surprise to me with her role and the way she acted it. We’re so used to seeing her as this sweet, beautiful looking actress in happy roles, always smiling. But she effortlessly played the character of a jewel thief and it was probably her best performance yet! Tom Hardy (Bane) was good and looked threateningly scary with his body and mask but there’s no comparison to our favourite villain- The Joker (Heath Ledger) from The Dark Knight. All the other performances were good. I also thought Jospeh Gordon-Lewitt who played Detective John Blake has great screen presence and played his part very well. Somehow, the Batman-Selina combination reminded me of our very own Aishwarya-Hrithik jodi in Dhoom 2. Some of you who’ve seen the movie might agree with what I’m saying.

Overall, The Dark Knight Rises is a great movie which most people will love. I was a little disappointed with the length of the movie; I would give an extra star had it been a 2 hour movie, which would even leave me wanting more, but for now I’ll stick to 4 out of 5 stars.

Men in Black 3- Movie Review

Roochster

This was my first Men in Black movie and after seeing the trailer, I just had to go watch it! I’m so glad I didn’t miss it! Here’s why.

The story– Boris the Animal and his alien nation are all set to destroy earth. J and K must destroy Boris first in order to save the planet. But there are some secrets J doesn’t know about because of which he travels back in time to 1969, meets K there and together they recreate history.

So, lots of weird looking aliens, superb special effects and well-paced screenplay make MIB 3 lots of fun to watch! It’s an entertainer to the core with some really funny moments!

Will Smith and Josh Brolin’s performances are outstanding! Tommy Lee Jones had a small role but created an impact even then. Jemain Clement as Boris the Animal was great as the villain!

Overall, Men in Black 3 was fun even though the 3d was pointless. I’d definitely want to go back and watch the first two parts!
