Godzilla (2014) – Movie Review

Roochster

godzilla-2014-posterApart from King Kong there weren’t too any monster movies I had seen back in ’98 so Godzilla was going to be a thrilling experience. I can’t tell you how excited I was to watch Godzilla again, after more than 15 years and see a bigger, better and scarier Godzilla! I actually went and bought tickets in advance! Well, I was in for a surprise. Well, not a good one. Here’s why.

Plot in short– The world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

The Good– I thought it was interesting to have massive insect-like creatures created from radiation. The idea is great. Also, there’s a long build up to the main action that starts at two points- one when the creatures come alive and when Godzilla saves America from them. The graphics are great. Even the actors look really serious and committed to their roles. They’re natural and drag the movie as far as they can because Godzilla is MIA almost throughout. So kudos to them.

The Not-so-good– The film is called ‘Godzilla’ right? Well, he doesn’t make an appearance then for the entire first half of the film and is present collectively for not more than fifteen minutes. Ok, so those other beasts are scary too but hey, why call the film Godzilla then? I wanted to watch him more than the actors and the other beasts for sure! There’s too much attention given to the family life of Aaron Taylor- Johnson for reasons that could have been avoided altogether. So yes, I wish Godzilla had a longer and more important part. The first half is a drag and also slightly boring.

Verdict– Godzilla 2014 was a big let down and I really didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I wish to see a more thrilling, scary and better directed Godzilla the next time it’s made.

I was expecting a great horror film but what I got was just another high school movie where the weird bullied girl ends up standing for herself.

Despicable Me 2- Movie Review

Roochster

I remember how much I loved watching Despicable Me so part 2 with more emphasis given to Gru’s love story, more adventure and a bigger part for the minions made it fun to watch.

Man of Steel- Movie Review

Roochster

man-of-steel-posterLook! It’s a bird… It’s a plane…No its Superman! We’ve heard, read and watched so many stories about him. He’s truly a man of steel and has left us all in awe of him. I’ve always loved Superman, much more than Batman or any other superhero. So when I first saw the trailer of this Christopher Nolan produced ‘Man of Steel’ I was really looking forward to watching it. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. Read why.

The 2013 version of Superman, titled ‘Man of Steel’ is mainly about his origin and discovering himself and his past. Clark Kent has lived in a small town called Kansas all his life with his parents. He’s always known he’s special and has powers that noone else has. When he grows up his intrigue leads him to his true origin. He finds out that the planet he came from- Krypton was destroyed and his parents had sent him to Earth to save him from Zod, a man who will destroy everything including Earth to save his race.

I don’t know why but director Zack Snyder in trying to make the film rich in graphics and fresh in look has forgotten to bring out the soul of Superman and all that he does for people. The graphics are very good; no doubt about that but what lacks is depth in the story. It all seems too mechanical with so much action. I don’t understand the big fuss about Imax 3d either because even in 3d it was nothing great. I would have been ok with watching it in normal 2d because the cinematography is beautiful.

Henry Cavill as Superman might look the part and even be good at this craft but somehow seeing him in the Superman costume doesn’t do much. You wont be awestruck or excited to see him on screen. I preferred his bearded, simple guy look in the movie.  That’s not his fault though. I preferred watching Michael Shannon as Zod who played the bad guy very well. Amy Adams as Lois Lane is ok. Her chemistry with Henry Cavill is almost non-existent. Russel Crowe as Jor-El definitely stands out. He’s got an important role and has the confidence to carry it out well.

This is not the kind of superhero film that’s fun to watch. It lacks the light moments, the romance and the fact that Superman has a soul, forget the red chaddi! I wish there was atleast good background score everytime Superman was on screen. Oh sorry, ‘Man of Steel’.

Fast & Furious 6- Movie Review

Roochster

As a movie Fast & Furious 6 would be Hollywood’s version of ‘Race’ or ‘Dhoom’ but with less emphasis given to the characters or story, focusing more on over-the-top action, fast & expensive cars and muscles

The Call- Movie Review

Roochster

The call posterThe trailer didn’t excite me that much but the concept and Halle Berry did which is why I went to watch ‘The Call’ on an early Saturday morning. Here’s what I thought.

Halle Berry is a 911 Emergency Operator and gets a call from a little girl who is about to get killed. A small mistake turns out to be a nightmare for the girl as she gets killed. 6 months later, she gets a call from another young girl who gets kidnapped. This time, Halle Berry cannot afford to mess up.

I don’t remember the last time I saw a movie that kept me completely glued to my seat and made me feel like I’m right there, where it’s all the bad things are happening and I can’t do anything. It was definitely a long time ago. I don’t think there was even one dull moment from start to end. The director Brad Anderson along with the screenplay writer did full justice to the story. I was super freaked out and was as worried as Halle Berry was during the entire film. The ending might be a little weird but I guess its the writer’s imagination and all movies can’t always end the same way, right? What’s the point then? The cinematography is very good.

Halle Berry is a natural and her performance was so real that I could feel what her character was feeling. Even the little girl who played Casey Welson did a brilliant job. The kidnapper looked like one creepy guy and he surely scared the shit out of me. All the other characters contributed in a major way in making the film what it is.

This is one of those movies that can be watched at any time and still give you the shivers and excitement as you’d get the first time you saw it. Fast paced, interesting and absolutely gripping, The Call is a must watch, especially if you love thrillers!

Olympus Has Fallen- Movie Review

Roochster

Its one of those heroic movies that remind you of the movies you grew up watching as a child where you have tremendous respect for the hero of the film (Gerard Butler in this one), almost believing as if what you’ve just seen is a true event and choosing to ignore all the problem areas, in this case it being the cinematography (too dark).

Like The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty is interesting, real, well directed and the last fifteen minutes, even though completely dark and not as dramatic as I had imagined, make the film stand out.
