Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara- Movie Review

Once upon ay time in mumbai dobaara posterOnce upon a time in Mumbaai was unexpectedly good and that’s what raised the bar for Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobaara. Was it a better film? You’re just about to find out.

The sequel tells us the story of Shoaib (Akshay Kumar) an Underworld Don who is influential and lives life king-size in Mumbai. He hires Aslam (Imran Khan) at a young age to work for him and be one of his gang members. Jasmine (Sonakshi Sinha) enters both their lives and everything changes. Can a mere gang member of a Don win against the Don himself and woo his lady love or will he be a shadow of the master for the rest of his life?

Milan Luthria is a great director! He knows his craft well and makes films for the masses. Now, we’ve already seen that in his earlier films and obviously this one is no exception. The story by Rajat Arora has nothing to boast about but I liked the end. In layman’s terms, this one’s a love triangle with the backdrop of the Underworld in the 1970s and 80s. The focus is on the love stories so you can’t really call it a gangster film. The screenplay is very good. The dialogues are alright but not as powerful as the ones in the prequel. The art direction is smart keeping in mind that it is a period film. Great visuals, sets and costumes. Cinematographer Ayananka Bose has captured Mumbai and all the actors beautifully with his lens, adding his bit to every frame. The action scenes are choreographed well by Javed Eijaz.

The background music is killer! Super job by Sandeep Shirodkar! Pritam’s music this time is just about average. I like the song ‘Yeh tune kya kiya’. ‘Tayyab Ali’ is of course a copy and so the credit goes to the original composers of the song- Laxmikant Pyarelal. Imran Khan’s done a very bad lip sync of the song in the film, by the way. I would have liked the movie without so many songs.

Moving on… The performances are all noteworthy. Who would have imagined Akshay Kumar with his voice playing a Don? Well, I certainly didn’t. Surprisingly, he was quite impressive even though Ajay Devgan’s voice and persona makes the dialogues sound better. Imran Khan who’s not known for acting was quite decent as Aslam. Sonakshi Sinha was outstanding as usual. She has a great on screen presence. Sonali Bendre had a short role but was graceful and mature. Far better than the actress she used to be.

So as a film, Once upon ay time in Mumbai dobaara was entertaining but not as powerful as Once upon a time in Mumbaai. Watch it for the brilliant performances.

Ek Thi Daayan- Movie Review

Ek thi daayan posterHorror movies are not everyone’s cup of tea; but for me they’re just another genre of entertainment. I hadn’t seen a single trailer of the film but knowing the cast made me want to watch it. Konkona Sen Sharma, Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin and Huma Qureshi are actors who wouldn’t work together otherwise and I just had to see what made them come together, especially for a horror film! Here’s my review.

Emraan Hashmi plays Bobo the magician who is in love with Huma Qureshi and has adopted a son with her. During one of his tricks, he gets hallucinations of his little kid sister who had died (when she was young) crying for help. He freaks out and meets his psychiatrist who hypnotizes him and takes him to his past life to find out what’s making Bobo see strange things. He goes back to when he was eleven years old and finds out that there was a ‘daayan’ who  pretty much messed things up back then for him. Now that he’s old enough and understands what happened back then, he understands that ‘Daayan ki saari shakti uski choti mein hi band rehti hai’ and that’s when he decides to end all the drama!

When you watch the film, you will realize that the story in the film is different as compared to other horror films. There are no tantriks or priests to make the ghost go away. So yes, the story works to a large extent except for the ending which is really stupid. The last twenty minutes were so bad that it would make you wonder if there was a separate writer just for writing such a dumb climax. The director Kannan Iyer has done a decent job otherwise as he keeps the pace going and doesn’t bore you. Cinematographer Saurabh Goswami has avoided the typical creepy angles like the one RGV loves and thankfully that works in the favour of this film. The lighting is lovely. The good thing is that the background score is not the only reason for you being scared in the film. You wont be that scared also, don’t worry!

Coming to the performances… Emraan Hashmi has acted better in the past. In Ek Thi Daayan, he’s ok and looks dull and worn out in most scenes. A little more effort could’ve helped him perform better. Huma Qureshi was a surprise package! She not only looks good in the film but also acts well. She’s convincing throughout. Konkona Sen Sharma has always acted well and there’s no doubt that in this film too, she’s done a great job! Kalki Koechlin barely has anything to do. She’s so-so. The child actors acted decently well.

The music by Vishal Bhardwaj doesn’t do much. In fact, the songs in the film slow down the pace a bit.

Ek Thi Daayan is not that good and not that bad. Just about ok. Watch it for Konkana Sen Sharma, Huma Qureshi and a slightly different horror concept.

Kyaa SuperKool Hain Hum- Movie Review

I was really looking forward to watching Kyaa SuperKool Hain Hum after watching all the trailers. I thought they were hilarious and totally crazy! Now, let’s get down to my review.

Coming to the story- What story? Haha what I mean is that there’s no story, just random scenes or jokes put together to create one sex comedy. It involves 2 guys with no ambition in life and aren’t particularly working, who have a double meaning for everything! They come across 2 beauties and chase them around and even land up in Goa with their pug ‘Sakru’ who is the doggy version of ‘Vicky Donor’. After that I don’t know what to say because there’s no story only just tons of pjs and double meaninged jokes.

So, as I said, there’s no story so let me not get into talking about that. Ekta Kapoor’s mantra is ‘Sex sells’ so she’s made sure there’s plenty of sexual innuendos and ‘non-veg’ jokes throughout that will make the college crowd go mad. And to be honest, people were laughing out loud, clapping and whistling throughout. Its clearly a movie for the masses. The styling is good, the hair artist has done a fab job, superb locations and colours! I also felt that Riteish Deshmukh hasn’t looked this good before. He’s worked on his body and he’s showing off his new tattoos on his arms and chest all through the movie. There’s a lot of adverts placed in the movie too- Lawman, Moods Condoms, Global Advertisers, Nimbuzz, Ipill to name a few.

Some of the dialogues are really bad; For example: Riteish Deshmukh at a pani puri stall says, :”Aane ragdo mane chaat’. Very old joke! Also , one of the pugs who Anupam Kher calls his mother is called ‘Rose Mary Maarlo’. Quite old and quite sad too! Many more of those in the movie. There are also some really funny jokes like when Riteish Deshmukh meets this gay guy at a bar and that guy says, “Haha you’re witty” to which Riteish says, “Haha you’re Churchgate”. Now that’s a joke only people in Mumbai will understand. That really cracked me up though!

Coming to the performances, I think Riteish Deshmukh is very good with his comic timing and has done a good job, Tusshar should stick to his ‘Golmaal’ role where he doesn’t need to do much, except for maybe the ‘Chingum’ scene where he acts like Ajay Devgan! Now that was hilarious! Sarah Jane Dias and Neha Sharma look hot and have done a decent job acting also.

Yeh picture itni ‘kool’ bhi nahin lekin phir bhi timepass hai. Dekhna hai toh dekho bhai!

The Dirty Picture- Movie Review

When I heard that ‘The Dirty Picture’ is based on Silk Smitha’s life, I quickly did a Google search and found out that she had done a small role in the movie ‘Sadma’ with Kamal Hasan and she looked extremely horny and weird. Why would anyone make a movie about Silk Smitha and why would Vidya Balan put on so much weight for a movie?! Read on.

The Dirty Picture is about Silk Smitha’s life. Reshma (Vidya Balan) runs away from home searching for work that will make her rich and famous. As luck would have it, even with her simple looks, she manages to get a song in a movie. People don’t like the movie, but when they see her sensuous moves and kaatil adaayein, she becomes the most wanted girl and everyone wants to sign her in their films. From Reshma, she becomes Silk and men love her, want her and can’t get enough of her. But is there anything besides money and fame in her life?

Ekta Kapoor knows what works and what doesn’t. She’s made a smart move and created a film that will be remembered not only for Vidya Balan’s acting and passion to be the character she plays, but everything about the movie replicates a person’s life we knew nothing about. To me that is a big deal. The story is very well played out and each character is well defined. The dialogues are superb and I love the way everything from the 80s ka setting to the costumes to the songs look so real and suit the time she lived in. The whole crew and especially the director Milan Luthria have done a damn good job!

Vidya Balan is the star of the show, undoubtedly! I can’t imagine any actress who’d put on 12 kgs for a movie, jeopardizing her film career. She deserves a standing ovation and hats off to her for pulling it off so beautifully! She looks fantastic even though she has an ugly paunch in the movie and acts effortlessly! RESPECT! She can probably be called the female Aamir Khan in Bollywood who does films because they mean something and not just to make money or whatever other reasons other actors have. She definitely deserves all the awards this year! Naseeruddin Shah might be old but does such a good job that you’d feel no one else would match up to him for the part of Surya. Tusshar Kapoor plays a lallu in the movie and luckily didn’t have a big role so he was quite ok. Emraan Hashmi has acted decently but his voice is quite irritating and monotonous!

The movie has only 3 songs out of which Ooh Lala is just too good and I can’t stop dancing everytime I listen to it thanks to Bappi Lahiri. Even Ishq Sufiyana is lovely.

The Dirty Picture is one of the best movies of 2011 and I totally recommend it! Go watch it in a single screen theatre to really enjoy it! Superb hai boss!
