Sholay 3D- Movie Review

Roochster

sholay-3D-Movie-Poster“What?! You haven’t seen Sholay?” is the standard reaction I’ve always got because I hadn’t seen Sholay until today! Yep! I had only seen it in parts so shame on me! Well, now that I have, lets’s get down to my review.

Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan), a dacoit everyone at Ramgarh is afraid of is the target of Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar), an ex police officer who’s family Gabbar had destroyed along with Thakur’s arms (Yeh haath humko dede Thakur!)In order to avenge his family’s death and save Ramgarh from bullying of all sorts by Gabbar and his gang, he hires Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra), notorious small time thieves.

Directed by Ramesh Sippy in the year 1975, Sholay was definitely made with the best team. The story and screenplay go hand in hand beautifully and create magic on screen. Salim-Javed have written a miraculously corny but brilliant script! The dialogues in the movie are forever etched in our hearts and mimics from all over the world will perform with the same chutzpah they have been doing all these years. Everything from the look of the film to the cinematography, costumes, setting, action and choreography is perfect for its time. In fact, it’s so good that even in 2014 it’s fun to watch. I just felt that the 3D was pointless. Apart from a few effects, there was no requirement at all. And yes, it was a little too long so it could have been edited better. A lot of movies, China Gate being the biggest example have been inspired by Sholay and that says a lot about the film.

The background score is superb! It was amazing that so much attention was given to things like the sound of the cigarette lighting up or the sound of shoes on wood or the horse neighing in the background. The music by R.D. Burman as we know is fantastic! Every song is a superhit! I just didn’t like what they did with the voices in the songs on this 3D version. They sounded muffled and I felt that it could have been avoided.

The performance by every actor in the film is top notch. Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra make a great team together and complement each other as Jai and Veeru. They’re great actors as we all know. Hema Malini has a bit of an annoying role but she manages to still make you like her in an annoying way. Jaya Bhaduri is beautiful and expresses herself well without having many dialogues too. Sanjeev Kumar is excellent as Thakur. Noone could have played the character better. Amjad Khan as Gabbar is a fun villain to watch. Asrani (‘Hum Angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hai’) has a short role but stands out with his dialogue delivery and exaggerated style of acting. All the other supporting actors play a major role in making Sholay what it is.

Sholay comes in the ‘Top 100 films to watch before you die’ category for sure. Very well made, technically first rate, entertaining and an absolute must watch!

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2- Movie Review

Roochster

yamla-pagla-deewana-2 posterI’ve seen Yamla Pagla Deewana before this and I knew exactly what I was going for. Only, I didn’t think it was going to be so bad! Well, here’s my review

Dharam (Dharmendra) and his notorious son Gajodhar (Bobby Deol) are busy fleecing people in Varanasi as ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana Baba’. They come across a super rich man who has a daughter he wants to marry off in London. Their plan is to go to London and get Bobby married to the rich man’s daughter (Neha Sharma). Well mannered and decent Paramveer (Sunny Deol) turns out to be the architect to change the look of the club the rich man owns. Unfortunately, Paramveer is Dharam’s first son.

I don’t know why this film was made in the first place. Bad story, bad screenplay, bad direction are reasons enough to make this is flop film already! What’s the point in spending money on costumes, hair, make up, actors, etc.? The story by Lynda Deol is written so badly that there’s barely any scope for it to do well as a film. For instance, there’s an orangutan and sumo wrestlers to add humour because Johnny Lever and Anupam Kher who are meant to do comedy in the film just got offered the worst roles of their lives! Please notice both of them. You will agree that their roles are not only pointless but also absolutely ridiculous and not funny at all!

The good thing is that they’ve shot in Scotland and UK and there are some pretty visuals. The cinematographer has captured it all well. I also think the background score by Raju Singh is very good although the music is a letdown.

I wouldn’t boast about the performances because there’s not much to really point out except the fact that it’s always nice to see Dharmendra on screen. He’s a good looking man at his age and tries his best to look and act cool. There was barely any scope to act in this film anyway. Bobby Deol is subtle and good. He’s actually too cool for the film. The sardar look really suits Sunny Deol and even though I can’t say too much about his acting, he looks rather dashing and it’s nice to see him do action scenes with his ‘angry man face’. Anupam Kher and Johnny Lever as I said have wasted their time and done the worst roles of their lives. Neha Sharma and Kristina Akheeva look pretty and that’s that.

As a film Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 is worse than the first part and totally a time waste! Not entertaining at all!

Yamla Pagla Deewana- Movie Review

Roochster

Galti ho gayi merese! The trailers looked so good but the movie was the total opposite!

Its one of those movies that you’ve already seen. Sunny Deol, NRI from Canada is in search of his lost brother (Bobby Deol) and father (Dharmendra) in India. Dharmendra ran away with Bobby after separating from his wife in their early years of marriage because of which the brothers have never met each other and one of their parents too. That is just half the story. The other half is that Bobby is in love with a girl whose parents want her to marry someone else. So Bobby along with his brother goes to Punjab to get her and convince her family.

The story is a hotchpotch of sorts. Too many things happening and its quite annoying. I understand having all the 3 Deols is the USP of this film but the comedy was just left to the dogs! Imagine I’m a person who laughs at the most stupid jokes but here I was just hoping the movie would end soon. It got better after the interval though.I actually dragged my friend Karishma who’s come down from Ahmedabad for only 3 days manaoing her that it would be hilarious! She wanted to walk out of the theatre even before the interval and I was actually convinced with the idea but I still made her stay and throughout the movie I was looking at her and laughing. Hehehehe (Evil laugh).

Actingwise Dharmendra was a letdown. I thought Bobby Deol was quite good though. Sunny just did the corny action scenes well. The new actress just looks pretty. Johnny Lever hardly had a role. I think if he was there for longer, it would have increased the comedy percentage from 10% to 30% atleast.

The locations are superb! They could have made better use of them though. The songs are bad except for the title song. The costumes are very bad. The story as I said earlier is a hotchpotch. The dialogues are stupid.

I would’ve appreciated it if the movie was yamla, pagla or deewana… but unfortunately, it isn’t. So do not watch it please.
