Policegiri- Movie Review

Policegiri movie posterInspired by Dabangg, Singham and Rowdy Rathore and since ‘cop films’ are ‘in’ these days, looks like director K.S.Ravikumar wanted to remake his Tamil hit ‘Saamy’ to create a buzz using the Munnabhai star. Sanjay Dutt is in jail at the right time. Atleast he won’t have to face the media asking him questions about why he would do a film like Policegiri. Gah! Here’s my review.

Sanjay Dutt plays a badass Deputy Police Commissioner- Rudra who makes sure things are in order in the town where’s he posted. He beats up the bad guys for peace and harmony among the people but at the same time also takes bribes from illegal shop owners, smugglers, etc. as long as people are not harmed. He has a girlfriend (Prachi Desai) who is proud of him until she finds out about him taking bribes from politician Nagori (Prakash Raj) who does everything bad to be in the good eyes of people.

Imagine the kind of writing when you have a dialogue like “Born in Mumbai ‘bought up’ in India” (for those who know the difference between bought and brought) and Sanjay Dutt saying it so confidently. The story is so weak that the screenplay and dialogues can barely hold up. There are a few funny scenes and seeti-bajao dialogues though but the rest is quite boring. Some action scenes are well choreographed and the editing of the action scenes is very good. Beautiful cinematography except for a stupid song which is shot entirely in front of a chroma screen and a few other scenes. The styling is ok, the make up is horrible! Prachi Desai looks caked up!

The music by Himesh Reshammiya is not cool and the background score doesn’t do much either.

Sanjay Dutt’s performance is not that great to be honest. Also, at the age of 53, he looks a lot older. So to play a 25-30 yr old guy in love doesn’t suit him at all. Prachi Desai’s character is also quite lame and she doesn’t contribute much to the film. This might be her worst film yet. Where’s the Prachi Desai we saw in Rock On? Sanjay Dutt and Prachi Desai’s chemistry is also non-existent. Prakash Raj is superb! I loved him in Singham and in this film too with the limited scope that he had, he’s done full justice. If it weren’t for him, the film would be a bigger flop. Rajpal Yadav along with Rajat Rawail are there for entertainment but are quite annoying. Om Puri does his best.

If Sanjay Dutt was out, I would throw him back in jail for doing this film. Waste of money!

Go Goa Gone- Movie Review

Go Goa Gone posterI wasn’t expecting much from this Bollywoodified zombie film, especially with Kunal Khemu in it. But… what a pleasant surprise!

3 friends- Hardik (Kunal Khemu), Luv (Vir Das) and Bunny (Anand Tiwari) who work and stay together don’t have anything exciting happening in their lives. Hardik and Luv spend their time smoking up, drinking and trying their luck with women but nothing seems to work. Work comes up for Bunny in Goa and his friends seize the opportunity and tag along with him. On reaching there, they meet Luna (Puja Gupta) who is Luv’s Facebook friend. She tells them about this ‘Rave’ party happening on an island and they decide to go. All’s not well when they realise the next morning that everyone on the island has turned into zombies. That’s when they meet wanna-be Russian mafia Boris (Saif Ali Khan).

Those of you who have seen the Hollywood flick Zombieland should not expect this to be like it. Sure, the genre is the same but as a movie this one should be judged by itself and not be compared. The directors Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK have done a good job in making a film that is not only entertaining but also well conceptualized. We’ve had enough of those gross looking ghosts in our scary movies! They’re more apt in ‘Go Goa Gone’ to be honest. Atleast you laugh at them because you’re meant to!

The story and screenplay go hand in hand and with a simple premise like in this, the dialogues and expressions work the most. They are very today. Fresh, witty and natural. Good work, writers! I read Kunal Khemu is one of them too! I wish the background music was more pumped up though, like a more punk rock sort of beat going on in the background to pace up the film a bit. The cinematography is good but I expected more from a picturesque place like Goa. I liked how the blood squirted out from the zombies though. That was kind of cool! The music by Sachin-Jigar is different but goes well with the film and all that’s happening in it.

The actors suit the characters well and do justice to their parts. Kunal Khemu as I said, really surprised me. He is good and the most entertaining actor in the movie. Vir Das again is a natural and is a lot of fun to watch. He’s a good looking guy. Saif Ali Khan’s character is fun in the start but gets a bit off later. The way he introduces himself first with his accent I thought, ok this will be interesting and is different from what he’s ever done but he’s just got a long cameo in the film which barely counts as the main hero. Anand Tiwari is a good actor and played the part of a naiive friend very well. He is fun to watch too. Puja Gupta was very ok and didn’t quite fit in with the cast. Honestly, she was not the best choice for the part.

Fun, entertaining and twisted, this film appeals the most to the youth. Go Goa Gone will make you laugh out loud. Go watch it with a bunch of friends!

Aiyyaa- Movie Review

I had seen the trailers of Aiyyaa and I actually wasn’t very excited to watch the movie because it looked quite blah! But once I saw Rani Mukherji dance to ‘Agabai’, I was pleasantly surprised. Forget that the dance doesn’t match the song; Rani was dancing like a pro! So, I decided, chal, let’s give it a try.

Rani Mukherji plays a super filmy, happy and full of life girl who lives in a Maharashtrian middle class family. Her parents want to get her married and finally find the right man for their daughter after making her meet many. She wants to work and make some money so she can do something constructive with her life and so takes up a job at a college library. There she falls in love with Prithviraj, an artist, who always smells good and doesn’t have a very good reputation. Does she go for her parents’ choice or with the one she’s too scared to even talk to?

I’m surprised Anurag Kashyap produced a commercial film like this since it’s so not his type, if you know what I mean. The director’s done a good job but I felt the screenplay was a drag and they’ve overdone the smelling bit. There’s a lot of unnecessary repetition that takes away the surprise element in the climax. The setting, clothes, make up is all very real and visually beautiful. Each character is well defined. I like that the film is not too serious. It’s a ‘Rangeela’ type of movie if I may say, in terms of the look of the film.

Rani Mukherji is superb! She’s the life of the movie and gives a performance that makes the movie fun to watch. She looks lovely throughout even though she plays a very unglamorous role. Prithviraj doesn’t have much to say in the movie but he looks hot, especially in the ‘Agabai’ song. He’s portrayed the character well without having to say anything and that’s a good sign when you’re an actor.  Even the supporting cast was good, especially the girl who plays ‘Maina’ who had a crazy role and the guy who plays Rani’s brother in the film.

I wouldn’t say the songs are superb but they’re fun for the movie. I think the choreographers of all the songs have done a great job and they’ve made Rani move her body very well!

Overall, it’s a light hearted movie with great performances, very well choreographed songs, brilliant art direction and good cinematography. I just wish it was edited better!

Kyaa SuperKool Hain Hum- Movie Review

I was really looking forward to watching Kyaa SuperKool Hain Hum after watching all the trailers. I thought they were hilarious and totally crazy! Now, let’s get down to my review.

Coming to the story- What story? Haha what I mean is that there’s no story, just random scenes or jokes put together to create one sex comedy. It involves 2 guys with no ambition in life and aren’t particularly working, who have a double meaning for everything! They come across 2 beauties and chase them around and even land up in Goa with their pug ‘Sakru’ who is the doggy version of ‘Vicky Donor’. After that I don’t know what to say because there’s no story only just tons of pjs and double meaninged jokes.

So, as I said, there’s no story so let me not get into talking about that. Ekta Kapoor’s mantra is ‘Sex sells’ so she’s made sure there’s plenty of sexual innuendos and ‘non-veg’ jokes throughout that will make the college crowd go mad. And to be honest, people were laughing out loud, clapping and whistling throughout. Its clearly a movie for the masses. The styling is good, the hair artist has done a fab job, superb locations and colours! I also felt that Riteish Deshmukh hasn’t looked this good before. He’s worked on his body and he’s showing off his new tattoos on his arms and chest all through the movie. There’s a lot of adverts placed in the movie too- Lawman, Moods Condoms, Global Advertisers, Nimbuzz, Ipill to name a few.

Some of the dialogues are really bad; For example: Riteish Deshmukh at a pani puri stall says, :”Aane ragdo mane chaat’. Very old joke! Also , one of the pugs who Anupam Kher calls his mother is called ‘Rose Mary Maarlo’. Quite old and quite sad too! Many more of those in the movie. There are also some really funny jokes like when Riteish Deshmukh meets this gay guy at a bar and that guy says, “Haha you’re witty” to which Riteish says, “Haha you’re Churchgate”. Now that’s a joke only people in Mumbai will understand. That really cracked me up though!

Coming to the performances, I think Riteish Deshmukh is very good with his comic timing and has done a good job, Tusshar should stick to his ‘Golmaal’ role where he doesn’t need to do much, except for maybe the ‘Chingum’ scene where he acts like Ajay Devgan! Now that was hilarious! Sarah Jane Dias and Neha Sharma look hot and have done a decent job acting also.

Yeh picture itni ‘kool’ bhi nahin lekin phir bhi timepass hai. Dekhna hai toh dekho bhai!

Ferrari Ki Sawaari- Movie Review

We all know what a fantastic team Raju Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra make because of the films they’ve made in the past (Munnabhai and 3 Idiots). For the very reason I decided that I just had to go watch Ferrari Ki Sawaari.

So, Rustam is a loving father who works at the RTO office. His son is an aspiring cricketer and wants to go to Lord’s stadium in London to play cricket but Rustam unfortunately doesn’t make enough money to even buy him new shoes, forget paying a 1.5 lakhs to go to London. He comes across someone who wants to rent a Ferrari for a day for a wedding and they’re ready to pay him the sum. To fulfill his son’s wish, he decides to go to Sachin’s house and ask him to let him take the Ferrari for a day but he gets lucky and gets the car without doing anything. From there starts a journey full of ups and downs.

To begin with, this is a heartfelt movie with a great story but lacks the pace and the entertainment quotient which should have been there in a movie like this. I felt that the director wanted to make  a happy, sweet family film but the screenplay sort of slowed it down and made it slightly boring. It’s the kind of film where humour plays a major role. Unfortunately, there aren’t any LOL moments in the movie at all.

It’s sad when you have brilliant actors -Sherman Joshi and Boman Irani and their talent is not used to the max. They both have acted very well. The boy who plays Kayo is also good. The music is sad. I didn’t like the Vidya Balan number one bit!

Ferrari Ki Sawaari is a sweet film but a tad bit boring. I’ll recommend Rowdy Rathore for the second time instead!

The Avengers- Movie Review

Honestly, it was not as exciting for me as it might have been for most guys because all the good action was only in the second half and the superheroes were doing more bakbak and hardly using their superpowers throughout the movie.

Rascals- Movie Review

I went to watch Rascals with no expectations what so ever and guess what? Guess guess! I wont tell you just yet so read further!

The story- 2 con men, Chetan (Sanjay Dutt) and Bhagat (Ajay Devgan) run away with Anthony’s (Arjun Rampal) money and car. On reaching Bangkok, they both have their eyes on Kangana Ranaut who’s a rich, pretty and dumb girl (They’re obviously trying to woo her to get her money). Who gets her in the end… or do they?

As a movie, Rascals is so not funny! There are a few scenes that might be, but the rest is just really bad! All David Dhawan has done this time is concentrated on showing skin because the story and dialogues are pathetic! There’s no direction to speak of either. The songs are not that great but they suit the movie, their placement obviously does not count.

Acting-wise, Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan together didn’t seem quite right even though they can act well.  Arjun Rampal was a surprise factor though. He acted well and looked super hot… the best I’ve ever seen him look so far! From the girls, it seems that Lisa Hayden’s only reason for being in the movie is doing that one song and showing her tits and ass. I’d actually say the same for Kangana Ranaut. Please let me tell you that Kangana Ranaut this time has broken her all time record of being a pigeon. In this she not only looks and talks like one but also acts like one. She is so dumb in this movie that even a real pigeon would look smarter!

So, Rascals is totally avoidable this Dusshera! It’s not even a movie for the masses man! Masses pak jaayenge!

ZooKeeper- Movie Review

Kevin James is a great actor but the movie is just too stupid to be true especially for 2011 and so even kids may not find it too fun to watch.
