Happy New Year- Movie Review

happynewyear-posterI was more excited to watch Happy New Year for Farah Khan than for Shahrukh or Deepika. Somehow, Farah Khan’s films are the extremely corny, masala films which are my favourites! Does this fall into the ‘Watch’ or ‘Miss’ category? You’re just about to find out.

Plot in short– Charlie (Shahrukh Khan) avenges his father’s death by hiring a bunch of nuts for robbing diamonds worth 300 crores at the Atlantis, Dubai.

The Good– If you’re a masala movie fan like me, you will definitely enjoy Happy New Year for its over-the-top comedy, extra fillmy punches and colours. Her style defines Bollywood in its true sense, making the audience at single screens blow seetis and maaro taalis whenever Shahrukh Khan or Deepika Padukone appear on screen whether its showing his six pack or the way she moves her body to the tune of ‘Lovely’. The music and dance in the film complement the screenplay which is kind of crazy. There are many LOL moments, mostly stupid ones and some gross ones (like when Abhishek Bachchan vomits all over the people while doing the Dahi Handi).  For a film like this which doesn’t make sense (‘cause you’re making the most of the journey rather than the final product), it’s ok to have average actors because script is king. Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Anupam Kher and Jackie Shroff are all good actors and have done a good job but nothing worth winning an award for! The dances have been choreographed really well! Superb locations, gorgeous sets and brilliant styling make for a very glamourous looking film.

The Not-so-good– This film is clearly for the masses and I wouldn’t urge people to go watch it unless you’re a fan of this genre. However, I wish the story wasn’t dragged so much. It felt like it would never end! Also, I wish there was more emphasis given to the story. If dancers like them would win world-level dance competitions, the real dancers would forget what dance really is.

Verdict– A typical Farah Khan film that could have been better in so many ways and yet was fun to watch. Not bad but not that great either. So it may not be a ‘Paisa vasool’ film but it definitely is a Timepass film which I enjoyed.

Bhoothnath Returns- Movie Review

Preachy and a little too long, Bhoothnath Returns is not as entertaining as the first part even though it’s got great performances, especially from the little boy- Parth Bhalerao.

Jolly LLB- Movie Review

jolly-llb_posterFrom the look of it and the trailers, I thought it would be very boring and it was my last choice of film this weekend. But then I thought, chalo, let’s give it a chance. And so I did. Here’s my review.

Jolly, a.k.a Jagdish Tyagi (Arshad Warsi) is a newbie lawyer from Meerut. He moves to Delhi to make it big. Out there he learns that money can buy anything and lawyers need to lie at the drop of a hat. In his effort to give his career a push, he gets himself into a hit-and-run case by filing a PIL. Now the lawyer whom he has to fight is a shrewd, well established lawyer- Rajpal (Boman Irani) who has all the resources to win the case. Jolly is about to lose focus but girlfriend (Amrita Rao) shows him the path to being an honest and sincere lawyer and person. Can Jolly fight for justice without money or power?

First things first. This is no big budget film with stars to make the marketing easy. The film thrives on direction and good actors. With Jolly LLB, the battle seems to be won. Subhash Kapoor who’s written the story and directed the film has done a great job. Some of the dialogues are quite funny and they do add some character to an otherwise serious courtroom drama. The styling is modest and the production design is kept real which is good. The camera work is good.

Coming to the performances. Arshad Warsi in my opinion has always been a good actor and deserves to do more films like this. His performance as Jolly, the lead character is good, especially in the second half. He’s very likable. Boman Irani as the arrogant and over-confident lawyer is almost perfect. He’s probably only done good work in his career and be it negative or positive he does it with grace. Another actor who’s superb and has done a fantastic job is Saurabh Shukla as the judge. He’s hilarious and so natural that it’s a delight to watch him on screen. Amrita Rao is kind of useless in the film and luckily we don’t get to see her much. Her voice is a bit annoying.

There are barely any songs in the movie which is a good thing. They are quite sad anyway. I’ve heard a song called ‘Law lag gaye’ though which is a little catchy but not in the film.

The film is made with a lot of heart and I think it’s quite entertaining too. There were some people even clapping and cheering in the theatre which is a good sign. Go watch!

Delhi Safari (3D)- Movie Review

The worst 3D animation ever with the most dull, boring and flawed screenplay and dialogues that didn’t even make the kids laugh but good voice overs by Boman Irani, Govinda, Swini Khara and Prem Chopra.

Shirin Farhad ki toh nikal padi- Movie Review

The fact that Boman Irani and Farah Khan were playing the lead actors in the movie made me go and watch the film. Here’s my review.

So, Farhad works at ‘Tem Tem Bra and Panty shop’ in South Mumbai. He’s 45 years old and unmarried. Shirin, 40 years old, works as a Secretary at the Parsi Trust. They both meet, like each other and then fall in love. Then, of course there are small conflicts, family matters that complicate things but not too much.

Bela Bhansali Sehgal marks her debut as a director with this movie and to be honest, I would say she’s a better editor than a director. What could have been an extremely sweet film with good actors and a simple story was made into 2 hours overdone bawaness. I get that she wanted to highlight the life of parsis but she got a little too carried away with stereotyping them. She probably put the whole Parsi acting community except for Cyrus Broacha. Even with the setting being nice and pretty and all that jazz, the story just doesn’t have that appeal.

The actors are all good. Boman Irani and Farah Khan have both lost a lot of weight. Boman Irani’s acting is heartwarming and its always nice to watch him act. Farah Khan is probably acting for the first time and  she’s not too bad. They both look good together and have good chemistry too.

The music is very bad! There’s a song called, “Gadheda” to which Boman Irani dances to. Farah Khan has been given Shreya Ghoshal’s voice and also Usha Uthap’s voice. So weird!

Overall, it’s an ok movie. Not bad but not as good as I thought it would be also.

Cocktail- Movie Review

I can’t tell you how much I was looking forward to watching Cocktail ever since I saw the trailer. Chick flick and all that jazz. So as soon as I got done with school, I ran to watch the movie and here’s what I thought of it.

The story is about Gautam (fun, flirtacious, outgoing), Veronica ( loud, attention-seeking, outspoken) and Meera (cultured, boring, compassionate). So, Gautam and Veronica hit it off instantly and start dating but then Meera gets into the picture and things get complicated between the three of them.

In a way, the main plot is a lot like Dil to pagal hai- Gautam- Shahrukh, Meera- Madhuri, Veronica- Karishma. What I mean is there is nothing unique about the story. Its quite predictable. The screenplay is not up to the mark because of which the entire story starts falling down rapidly even though the look entices you and makes you want to watch the entire film. Superb styling and cinematography- very rich. The direction and editing is a bit disconnected because of which there’s no proper flow and it gets you a little restless, especially in the second half of the movie.

I love how Deepika Padukone is styled in terms of costumes, hair, etc. She totally looks the character even though her personality doesn’t allow her to project that in the best possible way. I thought Diana Penty was really boring. She was seedhi-saadhi  and looks beautiful which she had to be but there’s no charm in her which would draw you to her. Saif was his usual self, subtly funny and charming but nothing different from his earlier roles.

Pritam has done a good job with regard to the music yet again. Groovy numbers and Kavita Seth’s voice in ‘Tumhi ho bandhu’ is just too good! I love how the verses have been sung by her! I also like ‘Daaru Desi’ and the songs they played in the nightclub scenes.

So yes, I am quite disappointed with Cocktail. I’d suggest you wait for it to come on some TV channel or just watch it on Dvd.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu- Movie Review

I was really really looking forward to watching this romantic comedy especially ‘cause Kareena was in it and Karan Johar had produced it. Is it the perfect movie to watch with your Valentine? You’re just about to find out!

As we’ve all heard, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is inspired by the movie ‘What Happens in Vegas’ but I felt it was also similar to ‘Just Married’, ‘Wake up Sid’, ‘I hate Love Stories’, ‘Break ke baad’ and many more such movies. A guy and a girl, get drunk one night and when they wake up the next morning, they’re married. Now all they need to do is get an annulment of their marriage. But, during this period, love comes in the way and things take a turn.

I honestly expected better from this film. Even though it’s barely a 2 hours film, the pace is slow and gets a little pointless. It could easily pass off as a one hour episode of one of the popular comedy sitcoms.  So much could have been done in those 2 hours! I’m not saying that what’s there is bad; I’m just saying that there could have been scenes which would add to making the story interesting. But I loved the camera work, costumes, art direction and make up.

Actingwise, I think Imran Khan has done a good job. He’s definitely getting better at acting and is also getting movies that suit him. Kareena Kapoor is good but too much smiling got a little annoying, even though she looks gorgeous!

Amit Trivedi as a music director has been pretty promising in the past. I wonder what went wrong here. Except for the title track, I wouldn’t care to listen to any of the other tracks.

Overall, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is not a chick flick I’d recommend, especially if you’re going to watch it with your Valentine. Maybe my expectations were too high but this one’s just ok.

Don 2- Movie Review

You know, I was really really looking forward to watching Don 2, not because I love Shahrukh Khan but because I loved Don. Let’s see if this sequel is as good as the real shit.

In this movie, Don, a.k.a SRK gets himself arrested to join Vardhan (Boman Irani) in prison obviously because he has something big in mind. He wants to rob currency printing plates from a German bank and Boman Irani is the key to doing that with the help of a hacker (Kunal Kapoor). Roma (Priyanka Chopra) is a cop and obviously trying to get hold of Don not only because that’s her job, but also because she ‘laaouuus’ him.  So it’s basically based on the line, ‘Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, naamumkin hai’.

First of all, Shah Rukh Khan already gave us one stupid film this year- Ra.One. Second of all, Don was so good, but somehow Don 2 just lacks everything that could have made one hell of an awesome film! Farhan Akhtar is a good director and has an amazing eye for the way a film should look but he just isn’t good enough. The story lacks the thrills and freshness we saw in Don. The whole plot of the movie goes for a toss. Most of the movie is predictable.

Shahrukh Khan is getting older by the day and it shows- in the way he looks and the way he acts. The way he said his dialogues in the earlier Don were a 100 times more effective than in this one! His romantic scenes with Priyanka Chopra were good though. In fact, she was pretty good- not too loud or heroine-type. She played her part well. I also liked Boman Irani even though he had a small role.

The music is ok, not as good as Don’s. Even then, the look of the film (clothes, cinematography, and sets) is classy and looks very International!  Kudos to Farhan Akhtar for that!

Oh story for you! My friend and I had gone to Eros to watch the theatre. The crowd was crazy! People were yelling for most of the first half of the movie, there were drunk men dancing with fake guns on stage later they got slapped and dragged out by cops and to watch that half the theatre went out. So you can imagine what was more interesting to watch!

F.A.L.T.U. – Movie Review

Chaar bajj gaye lekin party abhi baaki hai! was all that I had heard/seen of the movie. From the name only I thought it’d be a stupid faaltu movie! Now, how faaltu is the question. Read on!

A group of 4 friends are rejected by all the colleges as they they’re the ‘don’t-give-a-shit-about-studies type. When their parents grill them about getting into a good college so they can have a bright future, they create a fake college for a day to get out of the mess. What follows is a lot of crazy stuff which I will not enlighten you with here in my review.

So, if you’ve watched the Hollywood flick ‘Accepted’ you might just think this movie’s a waste of time. I was just hoping they’d be a little original! But if you’re in college and went to watch this with your friends, you’ll enjoy it. The movie has flop actor Jackie Bhagnani whose papa is the producer of the film. He’s actually quite a sweet boy but doesn’t know anything about acting! Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Darshan Jariwala and Boman Irani were great and the other actors don’t matter much.

Even though the song’s aren’t that great, except for one, Remo Desouza’s choreography is outstanding, especially the last dance sequence with all the neon lights n all. Superb! It’s supposed to be a comedy film but I didn’t really find any of their jokes that funny.

But all in all, it’s a light hearted film with a good message in the end for college kids. For everyone else, watch ‘Accepted’ instead. Lekin itna bhi faltu nahin hai.
