A Flying Jatt- Movie Review

Roochster

Remo D’souza is a winner for his effort into turning a complete non-actor (Tiger Shroff) into an actor in a film that may not be the best superhero film (extremely stupid climax) but is entertaining enough to watch till the end and one can even expect a sequel to this.

Kerry on Kutton is raw in all aspects except for the performances of all the actors which help in adding some tadka to an otherwise average film.

Ganga- The Soul of India- Show Launch

Roochster

IMG_20160419_153653642_HDRI was invited for the launch event that took place on 19th April 2016 at Four Seasons Hotel, Worli, Mumbai.  I can’t tell you how excited I was, more so because I was going to see Dia Mirza in person. I think she’s one of the most beautiful, poised and positive actresses we have in Bollywood.

Freishia 1The event was hosted by the lovely Freishia who I’ve seen at many events before and also on the show Band Baaja Bride. After a short trailer of the show, she introduced to us Mr. Piyush Sharma, CEO (India & APAC) of Living Group, Zee Entertainment, Mr. Amit Nair, the Business head at Living Foodz and Mr. Shrikant Malladi, the head of programming for the Living Foodz channel. They spoke about the concept, the experience and how Dia Mirza was the perfect person to host the show.

Ganga- The Soul of India

IMG_20160419_155841107 IMG_20160419_155926178 IMG_20160419_155948779Once the short speeches were done, it was time to see the beautiful lady herself- Dia Mirza who made a grand entry on stage. She looked absolutely gorgeous in her Ritu Kumar full length dress and Amrapali earrings. She spoke to us in the audience about her new show.

So what is the show about?

It is Dia’s fascinating journey along the Ganges on ‘Ganga- The Soul of India’ which is all set to air on the  Living Foodz channel. From the 1st of May 2016, every Sunday at 12 noon and 7pm, Dia Mirza will give viewers a peek into the fascinating legacy that is shaped by the country’s longest river. The show explores all that the river has to offer, including the people, history, mythology, anthropology, adventure, music and of course the cuisine animated by its revered waters.

Unveiling of the book

Unveiling of Ganga- The soul of India

This was followed by an unveiling of the book- Ganga from which she read an excerpt. The core team behind the show along with Dia then sat down to answer all the questions from the media. She spoke about the different kinds of food she got to eat, the adventurous activities and spiritual experiences. There were some controversial questions like what she feels about the polluted Ganga, etc. and she handled them all with so much dignity, not hurting any religious sentiments, rather encouraging the youth and NGOs who are spending so much time and efforts to clean up the Ganga. She also told us how there were 11 cameras following her everywhere but this experience was nothing like acting in a film. This is the real her we will get to see on the show and she feels fortunate to explore India is such a wonderful way. I knew I wouldn’t get the opportunity again so as nervous as I was, I asked Dia a question and before that told her that I think she’s beautiful and if I were to compare her to Ganga I would use the word ‘Pure’. Before people would start getting annoyed ‘cause I was taking up time, I quickly asked her, ‘What were her favourite villages/ towns that she visited?’ At first she said it was the entire journey that was enriching but then mentioned ‘Harsil’ from where she got the most amazing view of the Himalayas and ‘Santhal’ which was so green with so many flowers and such nice people.

The Living Foodz team with Dia Mirza

Mine was the last question followed by a photo session by the media and then some of us were in line to get a picture with her. When she saw me coming, she blew me a flying kiss as a thank you probably ‘cause of what I said? Then when I went up on stage, I told her that I’ve been a big fan of hers since Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein and I’d really like a picture with her. She was more than happy to pose for a selfie with me. Yayyy! Day was made.

Selfies with Dia Mirza, the beauty.

The event was followed by High Tea consisting of tea/coffee, Aam panna, Chhaas, Pani Puri, tikkis and tikkas, Jalebis and Rabdi, Panna Cotta and Gulab Jamun Crème Brulee on the menu. I was too happy to bother about the food for the first time probably. Yayy yayy yayy!

I can’t wait to watch Ganga- The Soul of India from 1st May. It looks like a show you mustn’t miss.

Fan- Movie Review

Roochster

fan-movie posterI hadn’t seen the trailer of Fan and neither did I know Shahrukh Khan was playing a double role until I came home and opened a website to read the names of the cast of the film. Hawww! How could I not know it was him only!

Plot in short– Aryan Khanna (Shahrukh Khan) has a huge fan following but there’s one in particular called Gaurav Chadna (Shahrukh Khan)  who would do anything to get just five minutes with the star, to show him his trophy that he won in a talent contest and to offer him some Son Halwa sent by his parents. But one incident spoils everything and turns the fan into a creep and imposter. Will this madness ever stop and how?

The Good– Shahrukh Khan is definitely the best part about the film. In terms of creepiness, remember how creepy-scary Darr was? This is that multiplied 5 times. I was quite creeped out and my heart was beating fast thinking of what would happen next throughout the film. Shahrukh Khan as the fan is actually better than Shahrukh playing Aryan Khanna. The make up and hair artist and stylist play a huge part in making him look the way he looks. Kudos to them! The screenplay and direction is fantastic! Maneesh Sharma takes the story to another level by using the actors’ full potential.

The Not-so-good– There are several things that I found a bit stupid. For example how people barely notice the Aryan Khanna look-alike when he’s walking on the street or when he fools the guards of Aryan Khanna’s mansion and reaches the star’s house inside, almost fooling the wife. But suddenly people recognize him in London at Madam Tussaud’s museum. Also, I felt that it was rather lame for the star to be chasing his fan single handedly when he has the power to call the cops, involve goons and what not to get rid of pschopaths like Gaurav.

Verdict– Ignore the stupidity and enjoy ‘Fan’ for what it is. A thrilling, engaging and entertaining film that one must watch. Hats off to Shahrukh Khan for his best performance yet. For once I can say he deserves an award.

Rating– 4/5

P.S.- Prepare to be totally creeped out!

Ki & Ka- Movie Review

Roochster

Ki & Ka posterThis year so far Bollywood has made some fantastic films and its only April still. Everytime people compare Bollywood with Hollywood’s standards, totally degrading Bollywood, it angers me. There is so much beauty in the films we make even though they may not be technically as superior or may not have the budgets as they do. Whatever it is, Ki & Ka would be a slap in the face to all those Bollywood haters.

Plot in short– The tagline of the film says ‘Striling, pulling, samething.’ In Kia’s (Kareena Kapoor) world, there is no time to cook, clean or socialize with the neighbours. Kabir (Arjun Kapoor) on the other hand, is a builder’s son who doesn’t want to live off his father’s money but be a home maker and look after his family. They meet and fall in love and decide to get married. Can this role reversal result in a happy marriage?

The Good– This movie is meant for those who are open minded and non- judgmental. If you’re not one of these, then please go watch it with an open mind. Director R Balki who is also the writer of the film, has brilliantly executed a concept that works in today’s day and age. Many may not agree but that is only because of the kind of image one has in their head of what a man and a woman are meant to do in their lives. What Ki and Ka show is how wonderful life can be without the pressure of doing something you don’t want to do or being someone you don’t want to be.  A home maker deserves as much respect as a corporate slave. With the crisp screenplay and editing, you will find it an absolute pleasure to watch. Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor may not look like the ‘ideal’ on screen pair but both share great chemistry together. Kareena with her un-Kohled eyes and natural make up looks gorgeous while Arjun Kapoor on his Segway looks like the most chilled out person on Earth! They’re both so comfortable in their roles that it looks so real. Swaroop Sampat who plays Kareena’s mother in the film is effortlessly lovable in her character. I also thought Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan’s appearance was great! I found myself laughing and crying in the film and could relate to so much.

There’s a whole lot of research and mehnat gone into making the sets and locations come to life, trains being a huge part of it. The cinematography works its magic in several scenes and makes every frame look fresh.

The Not-so-good– While many will embrace the subject with open arms, most will turn it down due to narrow mindedness and stereotyping. So this turns out to be a negative because people aren’t even accepting the idea. It may be a little slow in parts but it doesn’t overpower the good in the movie. I wish Arjun Kapoor’s character tried atleast a little to do something with his time instead of acting so lukha at the age of 28. The final thing that didn’t go too well with me was the music. There’s no song that I would like to have on my playlist from Ki & Ka.

Verdict– Ki and Ka is a progressive film about a progressive ladKI and ladKA. Open your mind and I promise you will love it.

Kapoor and Sons- Movie Review

Roochster

kapoorandsons posterYou know how some movies take you in emotionally and leave you speechless. Kapoor and Sons is just that kind of movie. Who would’ve thought!

Plot in short– Arjun, the younger brother (Sidharth Malhotra) works as a bartender and a struggling writer in New Jersey while Rahul (Fawad Khan), the older brother, successful writer and entrepreneur is happy in London. They’re forced to come back to their roots, in Coonoor when their 89 years old grandfather (Rishi Kapoor) suffers a heart attack. During their time together at home, they find out that their parents (Ratna Pathak and Rajat Kapoor) are going through a rough marriage and financially, their father is finding it difficult to cope with the times. They also meet Tia (Alia Bhatt) and develop fondness and friendships individually. The brothers too have their own issues which need to be sorted amongst themselves. How will this dysfunctional family who throws crockery at each other while fighting be able to be happy and together again?

The Good– There are very few movies that have a mix of everything, the kind we call ‘Masala movies’ in Bollywood. The perception one has for this label is that these movies have music, dance, romance, melodrama, action and comedy. Movies like DDDLJ, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dil to pagal hai, Dil, Om Shanti Om, Jab We Met, etc. are great examples. I could see myself feeling all the emotions that were meant to be felt while watching the film. Director Shakun Batra is fantastic! He knows how to draw your attention and not let it leave the screen. I swear I did not look at my phone except for in the interval to say how much I’m enjoying the film. The screenplay writing is so perfect that I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s written for the audience of today, an audience that will relate and accept and love. There are a lot of lovely colours and beautiful looking sets that make Coonoor look picture perfect. And lets also give some credit to the performances. The actors, all of them- Rishi Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Ratna Pathak, Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra and Fawad Khan are brilliant. Even the guy who plays the Kishor, the servant is such a natural. I don’t think the film would have been so good without the realistic performances. It’s just overall such a fun, emotional and happy film that I can’t help but sing praises of it.

The Not-so-good– While I loved the film in its entirety, there are some flaws which can easily be ignored because you’ll be having such a good time. Things like chemistry- Alia Bhatt with Sidharth Malhotra… just didn’t see any. Also, funny how staying in Coonoor or abroad, they all have a typical ‘Bambaiya’ accent. The Mandakini and potty jokes were a bit too much.

Verdict– Get out and watch Kapoor and Sons NOW! You just can’t miss it, dude! Once you see it, you will know why I said so. Ok bye!

Airlift- Movie Review

Roochster

Airlift-PosterWhen I saw the trailer of Airlift it reminded me so much of Argo which has a very similar story. There may be the similarity of fleeing from the hostage country to their own, but apart from that, Airlift is based on a true story.

Plot in short– Airlift highlights the 1990 Iraq- Kuwait war that left about 1,70,000 Indian nationals hostage in Kuwait.  Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar), a Kuwait-based Indian businessman along with his wife (Nimrat Kaur) and his office staff helps free the Indian hostages from the war zone in Kuwait during the reign of Iraqi emperor Saddam Hussein.

The Good– The performances for one are top grade. From Akshay Kumar to Nimrat Kaur to Purab Kohli to all the other supporting actors, they all make the film interesting to watch thanks to their fantastic performances. The screenplay writer has handled the story well and written the script in a way that engrosses the audience. The movie is well paced. Director Raja Krishna Menon has put together a team of people who know how to do their work well; taking the art director, stylists, cinematographer, producer and every single person involved. There’s no melodrama or filminess to make the film look larger than life, which I like.

The Not-so-good– I felt that even though the story and screenplay are well written, there could have been more heroic scenes where you feel more proud of Akshay Kumar. I also felt that there was no need for so many songs during the film.

Verdict– Airlift is another one of Akshay Kumar’s best films in the recent years. Go watch!

Wazir- Movie Review

Roochster

wazir movie posterWhat happens when you put Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar together? Either they both sing in their unconventional- singer voices or both completely engross you with their acting skills and take you with them on an interesting journey. I feel lucky to have experienced both in the film Wazir. Here’s my review.

Plot in short– Danish (Farhan Akhtar), an ATS officer loses his four year old daughter Noorie while trying to fight a terrorist. This makes him so angry and driven that he single handedly kills the terrorist in a shoot out. This step makes him lose his job and he is suspended. A chance meeting with a physically challenged, retired chess champion Omkarnath Dhar (Amitabh Bachchan) makes him realize that there’s a politician involved in terrorist activities and he must be finished.

The Good– Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Abhijat Joshi are the true heroes here. They’ve written a top notch screenplay that works well in director Bejoy Nambiar’s favour.  Fast paced and thrilling, Wazir will not bore you one bit in spite of the underlying sadness in the characters that is with you throughout. Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar play a huge role in accomplishing that. Aditi Rao Hydari, despite her small role shines through. Neil Nitin Mukesh is getting better and more convincing with every film as the bad guy. The music in the film is nice and hummable. I came back home to listen to ‘Tere bin’ by Shantanu Moitra, sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal in their soulful voices.

The Not-so-Good– The chess bit might just be overdone a bit more than my liking. Apart from that, there’s not much that I think was not that good except for maybe that the second half of the film is slightly slow compared to the first half.

Verdict– Wazir is a good thriller that has some incredible performances. Go watch!
