Welcome Back- Movie Review

Roochster

Ridiculously corny, not funny, not entertaining and not worth your time or money in spite of the huge star cast, production costs involved and the so called legacy of ‘Welcome’.

Dil Dhadakne Do- Movie Review

Roochster

Dil dhadakne do posterAfter Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Dil Dhadakne Do has been the most awaited movie this summer and boy was I excited to watch it! Here’s a quick review.

Plot in short– A dog by the name of Pluto tells the story of a Punjabi family that’s got quite a lot of issues in their lives. The husband (Anil Kapoor) and wife (Shefali Shah) are rich but have their own set of problems. The business is going downhill and so is their married life. Their son (Ranveer Singh) is an obedient boy (so they think), following his father’s footsteps and trying hard to do well at the business but sadly can’t so they’re trying to marry him off to a rich man’s daughter. Their daughter (Priyanka Chopra) is married unwillingly to rich businessman Rahul Bose. There’s everything but love in their marriage and she can’t wait to break free and get back to her one time love Farhan Akhtar. It’s their parent’s anniversary and to celebrate, invitations are sent out to close friends and family for a cruise holiday in Turkey and Greece. On the cruise, Ranveer meets Anushka Sharma, a dancer, Priyanka Chopra meet her ex boyfriend Farhan Akhtar and bitter truths come out between the anniversary couple. Will this dysfunctional family come together?

The Good– Being a Zoya Akhtar film, this one is a pure family entertainer with witty dialogues by Farhan Akhtar, a super stylish ensemble cast, setting, production design, beautiful cinematography and very good performances. She brings out the best side in all her actors. As you will see, Anil Kapoor, with his salt and pepper hair looks like the charming 50 year old who barely looks his age. He’s fantastic as the authoritative and hyper father. Shefali Shah as the wife and mother plays her part with finesse. Priyanka Chopra flaunts her taunt body and delivers an outstanding performance. Ranveer Singh is superb! Naturally witty with his own style, he creates a screen presence like no one else. All the supporting actors- Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Anushka Sharma, Zarina Wahab, Riddhima Sud, the gossiping aunties, and the others equally contribute in making the film a fun 170 minutes to watch.

The Not-so-good– Even though the film is entertaining, there are some things which are extremely underplayed. For instance, Ranveer and Anushka’s love story doesn’t seem to have enough depth to go fighting for it in the end. Also, the first half is a bit of a drag. Too many people, maybe? The music by Shankar Ehsaan & Loy is alright. Luckily not too many songs. The humour in the film may not appeal to a large audience. The classes may love it but the masses may not because of the ‘upper class humour’.

Verdict– A movie with a happy ending and some great performances, this one’s a fun, light humoured family entertainer.

Mahabharat- Movie Review

Roochster

Mahabharat posterI remember being told the various Mahabharat & Ramayan stories by my grandmother as a child. Back then, we also used to watch both the Ramayan and Mahabharat serial on Tv. Oh how can we forget the way the Mahabharat song starts or the ‘Main samay hoon’ part with the Rishi muni and space in the background. Anyway, let’s get down to the review of the animated Mahabharat.

Coming to the story. The Pandavs and Kauravs who are at constant war with each other must fight to survive and rule over Hastinapur. Besides the war, we also learn about the five pandavs, the bravest and wickedest kauravs and of course, Draupadi.

I wonder what director Amaan Khan was thinking. I don’t deny the fact that making Mahabharat could be tough but it’s very unfair to watch such a mediocre animated version when you see some pretty brilliant animated films from across the world. Why does India have to have such a poor presentation of their beautifully written mythological tales? The screenplay is a major minus point which takes away the main aspect of the film. The start itself is so poor that I can’t begin to tell you about the remaining. 2 brothers playing at Gateway of India start fighting over a gold coin they both discover. Randomly, an eagle pops out of the coin and starts telling them the Mahabharat story. While all this is going on, there are two squirrels passing comments and a dog making faces. Now just think if the start is like that, what the film would be like.

The animation is horrible and the visual effects aren’t cool either. It’s like watching a video game with a story. So many jerks and grossly designed visuals that you’d rather go back home and watch the BR Chopra Mahabharat on Youtube. There are too many characters and it can get confusing if you don’t remember the story. I got confused so imagine children! Pity them!

The voice overs are kind of a saving grace in this sinking ship. They say the dialogues like they’re meant to even if their faces look like a really bad version of them. For example, Vidya Balan’s animated avatar looks really bad. I’d say Sunny Deol and Amitabh Bachchan’s avatars were the most identical. Anil Kapoor’s too was close to how he looks. The rest were just really bad. Anupam Kher who plays Shakuni mama is probably the most annoying character in the film. His voice gets to you after a while.

The music in the film is not worth mentioning. The background score is a decent attempt but could have been better.

It’s sad that children of this generation have this rendition of Mahabharat to see. I wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone. Please avoid.

Shootout At Wadala- Movie Review

Roochster

Shootout at wadala-PosterDirector Sanjay Gupta is back with yet another stylized action film- Shootout at Wadala which tells us the story of Manya Surve, a notorious gangster who was killed in an encounter in Wadala in the 1980s.

John Abraham plays Manohar (Manya) Surve. In college, he’s a good guy, has a steady girlfriend and even scores well in his exams. So what made him become a gangster? A murder accusation leads him to jail because of which he gets aggressive and wants to kill the people behind his imprisonment.

This is a film only for the masses, rather only for guys who love violence. I went to watch it at a single screen and it was housefull! Sanjay Gupta’s style of film making is typical- action, dialogues and the women all must stand out. The action is very good, the dialogues are killer and the women are nothing but sex objects. In spite of having good dialogues, the screenplay fails to find a steady ground. It goes all over the place and doesn’t do much to tell the story properly. Sanjay Gupta as a director must realize that the film should be beyond violence, abuses and women. The writing is so weak that you wont feel for Manya Surve or his girlfriend. Also, there’s no special effort made by the production team to work on the look of the film. Apart from using old cars, Kangana Ranaut’s styling and Sonu Sood’s clothes in a few scenes, you wont feel like you’re back in the 1970s or 1980s.

On the bright side, the cinematography is rich, the editing for the action scenes is outstanding and yes Milap Zaveri does cause a stir among the audience with his powerful lines.

John Abraham as Manya Surve is surprisingly good. This is by far his best performance to date; probably because he hasn’t got the chance to do any challenging roles in the past. Tusshar Kapoor is alright. Anil Kapoor as always delivers an effortless performance and looks so young! Sonu Sood and Manoj Bajpayee are very good. Mahesh Manjrekar has a small role but is amazing to watch! Kangana Ranaut looks gorgeous but is stuck with the same crying and cribbing kind of role. She still reminds me of a pigeon.

The music by Anu Malik is ok. The background score is very good. What is annoying is that the songs just come up randomly during the movie. Sunny Leone as an item girl has nothing to flaunt but her physical assets. She’s not that great a dancer and can’t mesmerize you with expressions. Priyanka Chopra’s dance number is better.

Shootout at Wadala has nailed it in the camera, dialogue and edit department and can be a major part of John Abraham’s showreel but fails to make an impact as a film based on true incidents. I got quite bored during the course of the film.

Race 2- Movie Review

Roochster

Race 2 posterRace came years ago and everyone enjoyed it. Was Race 2 as good? You’re just about to find out.

So, Saif Ali Khan is back in another race for money and love and this time he’s got new competition. Deepika Padokone, Jacqueline Fernandes and John Abraham. They decided not to include Bipasha Basu in this one because Abbas Mustan wanted to cast Johnny boy. Anil Kapoor and his dumb assistant Ameesha Patel are also there to make the film lighter with their double meaning pjs.

The director duo Abbas Mustan is slowly losing it. With the attempt of making it filled with twists and turns, the movie only gets longer and a little pakao. Sure, the film is well styled in all respects and has the shine of a freshly cut diamond but the story and sense the film should have lacks a bit. It clearly isn’t as good as Race.

The actors in the film are all average. I wouldn’t say anyone’s performance is very good. Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel are good but have such cheesy lines that they get annoying after a while. Saif Ali Khan looks his age now with his hair gelled back. His entry scene with him walking out of the water like a young stud boy didn’t help one bit! Deepika Padukone and Jacqueline Fernandes look hot with all their sexy outfits revealing their legs and cleavage. Add John Abraham to that list. He’s smoking hot! 😛

The songs are decent and can be danced to. Thank you Pritam! The songs ‘Beintehaan’ and ‘Party on my mind’ are the best in my opinion.

Race 2 as a movie has been disappointing albeit a little entertaining thanks to the 2 and a half  hour fashion show.

Mission Impossible 4 Ghost Protocol- Movie Review

Roochster

This movie is clearly not my type as it made me feel restless and slightly bored, even with the gadgets, technology, etc. I just didn’t see myself connect with the second half of it and also felt that Anil Kapoor was such a waste!

Aisha- Movie Review

Roochster

After reading about the movie’s promotions and news from SonamAKapoor’s Twitter updates every single day, I saw the much awaited Aisha this morning. Ab kya kahoon?

I knew it was going to be a chick flick the moment I saw the trailer; and also knew that the film would revolve around Sonam Kapoor as her dad’s the producer.

Adapted from the movies ‘Emma’ and ‘Clueless’, Aisha (Sonam Kapoor) is about a rich spoilt girl who loves shopping, hanging out with her girlfriends and doesn’t really care about her career. She loves playing cupid but hasn’t been in love herself. And predictably, jealousy and loneliness make her realize that she’s in love with her childhood friend Arjun (Abhay Deol).

Aisha as a film is as predictable as one can get. The thing is that you’ll know what’ll happen next but the movie just drags and drags…There are so many scenes which could have just been edited, which would make the movie a crisper product eventually…but no!

Sonam Kapoor for the first time annoyed me with her tenh-tenh (my way of saying whiny, girly nakhras) style of talking. Someone who would be perfect for Aisha’s role in my opinion is Kareena Kapoor. I was surprised to see Abhay Deol in a movie like this! He’s a good actor but in this one, the guy hardly needed to act as Miss Goody-two-shoes  hogged up the entire movie! One actor who stood out was Cyrus Sahukar! He’s naturally good humored and so while acting, he didn’t have to try too hard. The clothes were super-stylish and looked hot on Sonam Kapoor but somehow her make-up in lots of scenes was really bad! There’s nothing outstanding about the way its shot but there are some really nice locations these people have scouted! The music is something I won’t complain about at all! The songs somehow make the movie more complete. Amit Trivedi, once again has made great music, especially the songs ‘Lehrein’, ‘Shaam’ and ‘Suno Aisha’.

So overall, Aisha for me is an average chick flick.
