Airlift- Movie Review

Airlift-PosterWhen I saw the trailer of Airlift it reminded me so much of Argo which has a very similar story. There may be the similarity of fleeing from the hostage country to their own, but apart from that, Airlift is based on a true story.

Plot in short– Airlift highlights the 1990 Iraq- Kuwait war that left about 1,70,000 Indian nationals hostage in Kuwait.  Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar), a Kuwait-based Indian businessman along with his wife (Nimrat Kaur) and his office staff helps free the Indian hostages from the war zone in Kuwait during the reign of Iraqi emperor Saddam Hussein.

The Good– The performances for one are top grade. From Akshay Kumar to Nimrat Kaur to Purab Kohli to all the other supporting actors, they all make the film interesting to watch thanks to their fantastic performances. The screenplay writer has handled the story well and written the script in a way that engrosses the audience. The movie is well paced. Director Raja Krishna Menon has put together a team of people who know how to do their work well; taking the art director, stylists, cinematographer, producer and every single person involved. There’s no melodrama or filminess to make the film look larger than life, which I like.

The Not-so-good– I felt that even though the story and screenplay are well written, there could have been more heroic scenes where you feel more proud of Akshay Kumar. I also felt that there was no need for so many songs during the film.

Verdict– Airlift is another one of Akshay Kumar’s best films in the recent years. Go watch!

Policegiri- Movie Review

Policegiri movie posterInspired by Dabangg, Singham and Rowdy Rathore and since ‘cop films’ are ‘in’ these days, looks like director K.S.Ravikumar wanted to remake his Tamil hit ‘Saamy’ to create a buzz using the Munnabhai star. Sanjay Dutt is in jail at the right time. Atleast he won’t have to face the media asking him questions about why he would do a film like Policegiri. Gah! Here’s my review.

Sanjay Dutt plays a badass Deputy Police Commissioner- Rudra who makes sure things are in order in the town where’s he posted. He beats up the bad guys for peace and harmony among the people but at the same time also takes bribes from illegal shop owners, smugglers, etc. as long as people are not harmed. He has a girlfriend (Prachi Desai) who is proud of him until she finds out about him taking bribes from politician Nagori (Prakash Raj) who does everything bad to be in the good eyes of people.

Imagine the kind of writing when you have a dialogue like “Born in Mumbai ‘bought up’ in India” (for those who know the difference between bought and brought) and Sanjay Dutt saying it so confidently. The story is so weak that the screenplay and dialogues can barely hold up. There are a few funny scenes and seeti-bajao dialogues though but the rest is quite boring. Some action scenes are well choreographed and the editing of the action scenes is very good. Beautiful cinematography except for a stupid song which is shot entirely in front of a chroma screen and a few other scenes. The styling is ok, the make up is horrible! Prachi Desai looks caked up!

The music by Himesh Reshammiya is not cool and the background score doesn’t do much either.

Sanjay Dutt’s performance is not that great to be honest. Also, at the age of 53, he looks a lot older. So to play a 25-30 yr old guy in love doesn’t suit him at all. Prachi Desai’s character is also quite lame and she doesn’t contribute much to the film. This might be her worst film yet. Where’s the Prachi Desai we saw in Rock On? Sanjay Dutt and Prachi Desai’s chemistry is also non-existent. Prakash Raj is superb! I loved him in Singham and in this film too with the limited scope that he had, he’s done full justice. If it weren’t for him, the film would be a bigger flop. Rajpal Yadav along with Rajat Rawail are there for entertainment but are quite annoying. Om Puri does his best.

If Sanjay Dutt was out, I would throw him back in jail for doing this film. Waste of money!

The Avengers- Movie Review

Honestly, it was not as exciting for me as it might have been for most guys because all the good action was only in the second half and the superheroes were doing more bakbak and hardly using their superpowers throughout the movie.

Robot- Movie Review

I didn’t expect much from this Rajni(kant) and Aishwarya starrer but what do you know! Robot a.k.a Robot was not bad at all!

The film is as massy as it can get! Rajni is a scientist and Ash his love interest. Rajni makes a Robot called Chitti who looks exactly like hi. This robot is made with the intention of helping the Indian Army and protecting the people of India. Unfortunately, Danny Denzongpa (villain) who is also Rajni’s mentor is super jealous of Rajni’s achievements and so, tries a lot of things to make sure Rajni becomes unsuccessful. Then of course many more things happen and I’m not gonna tell you what!

The story is very 90s. It’s obviously not the most practical story but I guess in a movie yeh sab chalta hai especially if Rajnikant is in it… Hai na? 3 hours seem a little long…I wish it was shorter! The special effects are superb though and especially the last half an hour. There aren’t any legendary dialogues in this movie but there are some scenes which are extremely ridiculous and yet cool!

Aishwarya looks beautiful! Her hair and make-up person has done a brilliant job! Rajnikant looks like a monkey with his beard and long ugly-looking hair…luckily they didn’t make the robot look like that (not that the Robot looks like a hero)! But when you watch Rajni on screen, you know he’s a star and no matter how old he is with however little hair on his head, he still has that presence which you can’t deny. He and Aishwarya both have acted well. The action scenes are outstanding! Also, I love the locations they’ve chosen for their songs! Director Shankar has done a good job as a director and the background music was great but somehow I felt that this was AR Rahman’s worst album as a music director. Maybe it’s just me who feels this way but I didn’t like even one song! Very surprising!

So overall, Robot was a full on masala film, quite entertaining but it loses points because it was really long! No Rajni fan should miss this!

Dabangg- Movie Review

Chulbul “Salman Khan” Pandey has done it again! His cool style, dialogue delivery, the dances, the action, the smile, the filminess…uffff! I’m floored… by him…not the movie!

Dabangg means fearless. Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan) is a fearless, corrupt cop who also calls himself “Robinhood Pandey”. He’s got a sad family life but his love life becomes hot and happening after he meets Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha). He has a step brother, Makkhan Pandey (Arbaaz Khan) who is slightly dumb. He gets influenced by a corrupt wanna-be politician and starts killing people for the politician so that he gets some money to pay his father’s hospital bills. Later he realizes he’s being used as he was asked to kill his own brother. But then he realizes and blah blah blah.

Salman Khan is awesome! The moustache looks great on him and he still manages to look handsome in the movie in spite of wearing pants and shirts and police-ki-vardi. The way he delivers his dialogues, dances, does his action scenes, you’d just be staring at him, especially if you’re a crazy fan like me! Sonakshi Sinha is a breath of fresh air! She’s beautiful and acts very well! I think she’s going to be a great actress in Bollywood! The story is a bit thanda… almost pointless. Mahesh Manjrekar shouldn’t have been there at all!

The action scenes are a class apart! They remind me of how the directors from the south make films. Great action cuts! There are some comedy scenes which are decent because of the dialogues but there are a lot of scenes in the movie which were just irrelevant. Being a 2 hours ka movie it felt long! The first half was quite slow. The music is good but the songs are placed anyhow which kinda spoils it! The song ‘Munni badnaam hui’ is kickass and you can’t get enough of Malaika Arora Khan!

Overall, it’s ok…there are a lot of WTF moments in the movie…can be watched once.  This one is for all the crazy Salman Khan fans out there! 😉

Predators- Movie Review

Ok now what do I say about Predators? It’s one of those typical action movies meant for guys! As much as I didn’t wanna watch it, my friend somehow convinced me to go for it.

The movie starts off with 6-7 warriors from various countries dropping down with parachutes onto an unknown planet. Why exactly they agreed to get onto the plane is not explained. Also, there were empty cages/boxes in which various predators were thrown down too. Again, no explanations given. So the point of the movie is to basically make these humans fight with the ugly predators.  In the end, the out of 7, two humans survive and are stuck on that planet. How lame!

Adrien Brody is good in this movie, no doubt, but I felt really bad for him because the movie is so pointless! The predators are ugly with fluorescent yellow blood and they kill humans and even each other. So, I don’t really see why guys would get so excited to watch a movie like this! Ok maybe because of the action… but in a movie so pointless? The special effects are pretty good and so are the places where they’ve shot the whole movie… The forest looks beautiful and inviting (not including the gross predators, of course!) Ok the pace of the movie is good… you wont get bored really; there’ll just be a lot of WTF moments.

All in all, Predators is a stupid movie but decently entertaining, mainly for guys who don’t care whether it makes any sense as long as there’s good action and aggression.

Salt- Movie Review

Angelina Jolie starrer Salt looked pretty interesting when I saw the trailer. And of course, I couldn’t miss it! You will be surprised to learn that I have never watched an Angelina Jolie movie (if you don’t count Kung Fu Panda)!  This was my first!

Angelina Jolie is a stunner! Besides looking gorgeous, she can act well too! I can’t imagine anyone else play Evelyn Salt as well as her.

The screenplay is a mess in parts but the overall pace of the film and Jolie cover up for it. The chase is exciting and leaves that ‘What next?’ question in your mind, which is what a spy thriller is all about anyway. The action scenes are a bit over-the-top and hence may seem absolutely ridiculous, but it’s a movie so you can’t really expect too much out of it.

If you’re an Angelina Jolie fan, watch it. If you like fast-paced action thrillers, watch it. But if you’re going to want to make sense out of every damn thing, don’t watch it. To me, Salt is an entertainer and I really enjoyed watching it.

Kick Ass- Movie Review

After hearing only good reviews for this movie I knew I had to watch it!

Basic story- Geek becomes a superhero (Kick Ass) to fight the bad guys.

Yeah the story is cliché so what’s the hype all about, you ask? Well, beside it being an action-packed bundle of entertainment, this movie has some really awsome scenes and everyone from a 6 yr old kid to a grandfather will enjoy it.  Watch out for Hit Girl in this one! She’s awsome at her age! Even better than Kick Ass!

Things that are really stupid in the movie:

a)      The love angle between Kick Ass and the girl is quite sad.

b)      Big Daddy’s (Nicolas Cage) costume was A LOT like Batman’s.

c)       Kick Ass starts his own profile on My Space…If he’s a geek, shouldn’t he have thought of the IP address and shouldn’t the news people track it down to find out who he is?

Ok so these are just a few stupid things and I’m sure you can point out a lot more of such stuff, but over all, Kick Ass lives up to its name.  Watching this movie is a super fun experience and I’d definitely recommend it to everyone!
