Captain America Civil War- Movie Review

OK let me be honest with you. I am not an Avengers fan. Also, I haven’t seen any Captain America movie so this was a first. I was invited to go for the special preview at PVR Phoenix and I was super excited! Sadly no plus ones allowed and I think Karan was quite jealous cause then he said, ‘Its ok Captain America is anyway boring’ to which I said, “you’re just like the fox who said the grapes our sour cause we couldn’t reach them” 😛 😛 Anyway, here’s what I thought of it.

Plot in short– While the Avengers are doing their best to save people and the world, sometimes, unintentionally it leads to collateral damage. This makes the government doubt the accountability of the superheroes. While Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes must be given full freedom to be themselves and continue helping people while Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) thinks it’s best to let the government take a call on how to protect the country. Standing strong against each other, the Avengers are forced to take sides resulting in a Civil War.

IMG_20160429_180449722The Good-Even though this is supposed to be a ‘Captain America’ film, Ironman Robert Downey Jr. kind of owns it. Some other noteworthy performances come from Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Mackie and Paul Rudd. The action sequences were well choreographed, especially the ones that involved Spiderman. In fact, I think I loved all the parts that had Spiderman. The computer graphics are great in parts and alright in some.

The Not-so-good– I must admit, Avengers is so not my thing and Captain America who I wanted to watch was really not the most important part of the film. Ironman got more screen time and had better screen presence too. I also have to say that I was quite bored in many parts. There is drama, humour, action, yes but the film is not action packed and fast paced as I had imagined and wished it to be. It was a bit of a drag.

IMG_20160429_173356655_HDRVerdict– Captain America/ Avengers is probably not my thing and if you’re a crazy superhero fan, you’re definitely giving me gaalis right now.  It was just a bit better than ok.

The Jungle Book (Hindi)- Movie Review

the-jungle-book-posterAs children we’ve all seen ‘The Jungle Book’ and have a special liking for all the characters. Who can forget the song ‘Jungle jungle pata chala hai’ everytime the show came on TV? The Jungle Book as a film in 3D goes one step further and makes us relive our childhood in the most fun way.

Plot in short– Mowgli (Neel Sethi) has been brought up by wolves and a black panther (Om Puri) since childhood and living with them, he adapts to their way of living in the jungle. But how long can he stay? After all, there is Shere Khan, the tiger (Nana Patekar) who is out to kill him. Will he be able to escape from the dangerous Shere Khan and go to the land of humans?

The Good– The best thing about the film is the breathtaking visuals! The computer graphics artists definitely know their shit. The voice overs of Bagheera by Om Puri and Baloo by Irrfan Khan are superb! Little Mowgli played by Neel Sethi is so natural that one would never think he’s not from the jungle. I also thought that Kaa’s voice over by Priyanka Chopra was fantastic but very short. I wish we got to see more of Kaa. The story is perfect for the first part. It leaves you wanting for more. The flow of the screenplay is perfect. The songs are great to listen to. The Hindi version of Bare Necessities is not bad but at all.

The Not-so-good– I think Shere Khan has a huge part to play and Nana Patekar is excellent as an actor but somehow his voice just didn’t go with the majestic Tiger’s appearance and character. I would have liked to hear a deeper voice for Shere Khan. I can’t really think of anything else except that I wish this is the first of many more parts to come. If it doesn’t, me and Jungle Book’s many fans will be very upset.

Verdict– Go back in time and relive ‘The Jungle Book’ in 3D. This is way better than the series we used to love watching every Sunday on Doordarshan. Go! Go! Go!

Gravity- Movie Review

Gravity-Movie-2013-PosterI went for Gravity expecting a mind blowing film. I was pretty blown over and I’m about to tell you why. But I was also not entirely mind blown. Again, I will tell you why.

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) a NASA engineer and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), an astronaut set out on a space mission, or rather just to see if everything’s ok up in space. Something goes wrong and everything falls apart, including their hope to survive. Lost in space with a lack of gravity, how will they come back to Earth?

So, it started off on a bit of a boring note. The first ten minutes were not fun at all and only because of the reviews, I was expecting it to get a 100 times better after those ten minutes.  It did get better for sure. Director Alfonso Cuaron has taken the story to another level with the beautiful visuals we get to see in front of us, especially in 3D. I’ve seen many 3d movies but this one was visually mesmerizing because we’ve never gotten to see an entire movie where space plays the central character. Great work with the camera and 3d! The way the tears float like water bubbles in air is visually stunning. When it comes to the thrilling aspect, I expected there to be a better build up leading to a great climax which I didn’t think there was.

What’s amazing is the way Sandra Bullock portrays various emotions and challenges that her character faces up in space. She’s superb! George Clooney too is in the movie for a short while but makes his presence felt in a big way. I’ve always had a thing for him. Just so casually charming.

I’d say good job overall but just felt it fell a little short of excitement and the thrilling aspect. Otherwise, watch it for the experience.

Cars 2- Movie Review

So this one’s yet another sequel that’s released this year besides Kung Fu Panda, Pirates, etc. What did I think of Cars 2? Read further.

Mater (Larry the cable guy) is McQueen’s (Owen Wilson) best friend but is taken for granted when certain things about his behavior embarrass McQueen. Things turn around when Mater is caught in a dangerous spy mission and has to prove himself as a person and a friend.

Before they started with the movie, there was a 10 minute Toy Story toon which was very sweet and I wished that went on but anyway, once Cars 2 started, I tried to get into that mode. The movie I felt could have been more gripping and fast paced. Being a Disney Pixar film, I felt it could have been way better but it wasn’t bad either. The animation is superb as expected. I really liked Mater as a character and thought he was very lovable!

Overall, Cars 2 is a decent movie to watch. Guys will definitely like it more than girls but that’s no reason for girls not to watch it at all.

Rio- Movie Review

I had seen the trailer of Rio quite some time back and knew right then that I just had to watch this movie!

Blu, a male blue macaw (bird) has lived in Minnesota with his owner Linda all his life after being kidnapped from his birth place Rio De Jeneiro. He can’t fly and hasn’t seen the real world, outside of the busy city but is very happy that way. He must go to Rio to mate with the last female of their species so that their breed doesn’t get extinct. After meeting the free-spirited Jewel (female blue macaw) and seeing how desperately she wants to get away from the cage she stays in, he realizes that there’s a lot more to life. What happens when they meet?

My brother and I went to watch it on a Sunday morning and absolutely loved every minute of it! Rio is a family entertainer. Everything from the animation to the dialogues to the voices to the story and music is all brilliant! Every character is well thought of and has a purpose in the movie. I could hear little kids laughing out loud in the theatre and while getting out, everyone had smiles on their faces. Now that’s certainly a winner film! Go watch it!

Megamind- Movie Review

Trailers can be deceptive. Such is the case with Megamind. When I saw the trailer, I thought this movie would be awesome but sadly it wasn’t so.

Megamind is a wanna-be bad guy who wants to be known as a bad-ass villain all over the world. In order to do that, he tries to kill the good superhero- Metro Man but realizes that evil can’t exist without good. So he creates a good superhero to show off his being bad skills. But can he stay evil and not experience what love is? Can the good superhero remain good without taking advantage of his superpowers?

Remember ‘Despicable Me’ that released just a few months ago? Well, that had a similar story and guess what… that was way better! In case you missed that and liked this, go watch Despicable Me and you’ll agree with me.

I didn’t fall in love with Megamind… the central character. There are a lot of flaws in the story telling because of which I didn’t see myself going “Awww” or “Oh no!” etc.  The animation is great but I didn’t feel any connection with the story. It was just going on… you know what I mean? Brad Pitt’s voice was hardly used unfortunately. I think he has a great voice! So yeah, these Hollywood guys do a great job with the minutest expressions where animation is concerned and lots of detailing but character detailing wasn’t given as much importance because of which it was just ok for me as a movie.

Despicable Me- Movie Review

Despicable Me is anything but despicable! When the movie starts, you’d wonder if you’ve come for the right movie because all the promotions carry the cute little yellow little things (don’t know what they’re called) don’t appear for at least the first 15 minutes!

The movie is about an evil man who wants to be the evilest by stealing the moon! His life changes when he meets 3 little orphan girls who make him become a great dad.

The animation is great! I love the characters- Gru, Agnes, Vector and the little yellow things which are the cutest! A movie with the right amount of emotions and a good story, Despicable Me is one of those sweet movies that kids and adults can enjoy together.

I’d say avoid 3d because a) the glasses will piss you off and b) there are no special effects meant solely for 3d! Other than this, go watch it and have a good time! You wont be disappointed!

Toy Story 3- Movie Review

Ok for the first time, Twitter had a “promoted trending topic” which means that the Disney Pixar Animation Studios left no stone unturned to make sure Toy Story 3- the final flick of the trilogy got all the publicity; and it was all worth it.

Woody, Buzz and the toy gang are back with a bang in this fun, adventurous and emotional story about growing up and moving on. As their owner Andy prepares to depart for college, his loyal toys find themselves in daycare, where crazy little kids and mean toys don’t treat them very well. Now, all of the toys must band together in one final, crazy scheme to escape their confines and return home to Andy.

There’s really not much to say about this movie. Brilliant animation, good storyline and we already love the characters! I had missed Toy Story 2 but I didn’t feel like I missed something. At the same time, I felt this movie is a perfect ending to the trilogy… It didn’t seem incomplete like Shrek. The only thing I fail to understand is that theek hai, the movie is in 3D but I think it would’ve been the same even normally. Faaltu mein don’t think about spending extra watching it in 3D!

Lotso- the evil bear was so evil I actually felt like hitting him and Buzz Lightyear was too adorable… my hero in this one! Even the Barbie-Ken romance was very cute! Overall, Toy Story 3 is a nice movie with lots of emotions and should not be missed if you’re a Disney Pixar fan.
