Happy New Year- Movie Review

Roochster

happynewyear-posterI was more excited to watch Happy New Year for Farah Khan than for Shahrukh or Deepika. Somehow, Farah Khan’s films are the extremely corny, masala films which are my favourites! Does this fall into the ‘Watch’ or ‘Miss’ category? You’re just about to find out.

Plot in short– Charlie (Shahrukh Khan) avenges his father’s death by hiring a bunch of nuts for robbing diamonds worth 300 crores at the Atlantis, Dubai.

The Good– If you’re a masala movie fan like me, you will definitely enjoy Happy New Year for its over-the-top comedy, extra fillmy punches and colours. Her style defines Bollywood in its true sense, making the audience at single screens blow seetis and maaro taalis whenever Shahrukh Khan or Deepika Padukone appear on screen whether its showing his six pack or the way she moves her body to the tune of ‘Lovely’. The music and dance in the film complement the screenplay which is kind of crazy. There are many LOL moments, mostly stupid ones and some gross ones (like when Abhishek Bachchan vomits all over the people while doing the Dahi Handi).  For a film like this which doesn’t make sense (‘cause you’re making the most of the journey rather than the final product), it’s ok to have average actors because script is king. Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah, Anupam Kher and Jackie Shroff are all good actors and have done a good job but nothing worth winning an award for! The dances have been choreographed really well! Superb locations, gorgeous sets and brilliant styling make for a very glamourous looking film.

The Not-so-good– This film is clearly for the masses and I wouldn’t urge people to go watch it unless you’re a fan of this genre. However, I wish the story wasn’t dragged so much. It felt like it would never end! Also, I wish there was more emphasis given to the story. If dancers like them would win world-level dance competitions, the real dancers would forget what dance really is.

Verdict– A typical Farah Khan film that could have been better in so many ways and yet was fun to watch. Not bad but not that great either. So it may not be a ‘Paisa vasool’ film but it definitely is a Timepass film which I enjoyed.

Bang Bang- Movie Review

Roochster

Bang Bang-PosterI confess! I was super excited to watch Bang Bang only because of the star cast and of course because it was going to be a typical Bollywood film! Was it worth the excitement? Read on.

Plot in short– Harleen (Katrina Kaif) is a bank receptionist and bored with her life. In order to find herself true love, she sets herself up on a date with the help of a site called ‘Trueluvv.com. Cut to entry of Rajveer (Hrithik Roshan), her date and the thief who stole the Kohinoor diamond and has people chasing him everywhere. Harleen must make a choice. She can either go back to her routine, dull life or be with this crazy man and travel the world with him and his escapades.

The Good– Well, the cinematography definitely tops the charts. Glossy, rich and sharp, the visuals are stunning! I thought the performances were decent but not wow! I must admit though that both Hrithik and Katrina looked droolworthy! They look great on screen! Even the styling, hair and make up is amazing! Beautiful locations too! So I’d say lookwise, the film is bang on! The music and background score is not bad either. There are barely any songs in the film but the songs ‘Tu meri’ and ‘Meherbaan’ are foot tapping and melodious.

The Not-so-good– Bang Bang is clearly a mix of a number of action flicks that have released in the recent past such as Dhoom, Ek Tha Tiger, A Holiday, etc. There goes the originality. The direction by Siddharth Anand is very ok. Sadly it has to rely on the weak screenplay which is nothing but a sequence of chase scenes. Keep an eye out for all the ads you get to see in the film such as Pizza Hut, Mountain Dew, Johnson Tiles, etc. which didn’t have to be so ‘in-your-face’.

Verdict– Overall, Bang Bang is nothing but a time pass film which is high on glamour and low on substance. It may be a treat for all the Hrithik, Katrina, Barbie and Ken fans though.

Haider- Movie Review

Roochster

haider-posterYou know its a Vishal Bhardwaj film when you walk out of the theatre with a heavy heart. Haider is not your typical Bollywood flick and Shahid Kapoor is far from being the ‘Chocolate Boy’ in this powerful film. Here’s my review.

Plot in Short– Inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Haider, the film tells the story of Haider (Shahid Kapoor), a poet who returns to his home after several years only to find that his father is missing, his house is burnt and his mother is having an affair with his uncle. Something’s fishy and Haider does not plan to let it be.

The Good– The adaptation has been brilliantly executed. To have Kashmir as the backdrop of the film only made it more interesting. Vishal Bhardwaj has played his cards well and made a masterpiece of a film. Superb screenplay written by him along with Basharrat Peer. I actually made an effort to read the credits online once I got home because making such a powerful film like this, rich in content is not common. Each character has been given life, making the viewer completely engrossed in watching the film from beginning to end no matter how long it is. The cinematographer Pankaj Kumar has captured beautiful moments on camera, making Kashmir look splendid in its most raw form. The most amazing part about Haider is the stunning performances by each and every actor. Award winning performances especially by Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Shahid Kapoor. Its films like these and a director like Vishal Bhardwaj that bring out the best in these actors. I can easily say that this is Shahid Kapoor’s and Shraddha Kapoor’s best film yet. The music and background score which is intense too goes very well with the theme of the film. The song ‘Bismil’ has been choreographed very well and is well composed. I also really really liked the song ‘Aao na’. I couldn’t imagine anyone but Vishal Dadlani singing it!

The Not-so-good–  There’s not much I didn’t like in this movie apart from the fact that it is slightly long and a bit disconnected in a few parts but I guess that’s the beauty of it.

Verdict– Get blown! Haider must be watched for its performances, direction, story, music, Kashmir, cinematography, background score and almost everything else. I loved it!

3 A.M.- Movie Review

I went to watch 3 A.M. only for Rannvijay but was rather disappointed to find a poorly written screenplay with average performances and barely anything to make you want to watch it.

Raja Natwarlal- Movie Review

Roochster

Emraan Hashmi has done better movies in the past with decent performances and sadly Raja Natwarlal disappoints not because of him but because the screenplay lacks the kind of writing one would expect from a con film.

Singham Returns- Movie Review

Apart from the message, the film was filled with violence, loudness and just didn’t have the grandeur or entertainment value as much as Singham.
