Love and Cheesecake, Khar (w) – Review

Roochster

Love and Cheesecake was on my ‘To try’ list ever since I read about it and I was pretty excited to go dig into their cheesecakes! Here’s my review.

Desserts– As the name suggests, if you love cheesecakes, this place is for you. You’ll get a variety of cheesecakes here- chocolate, hazelnut, lemon, New York style baked, Bailey’s, coffee, etc. We tried 3 different cheesecakes.

1) New York style baked cheesecake. Now that was superb! Super soft, rich cheesecake with the right amount of sweetness and a yummy Oreo biscuit base! A must have!

2) Lemon Cheesecake- This had a sponge cake base and was strictly ok.

3) Bailey’s Cheesecake- This one’s for all the Bailey’s fans. It’s got the right amount of Bailey’s but the overall taste and sponge cake base are not as good.

Actually we had only asked for the Baked and Bailey’s but they gave us Lemon by mistake instead of Bailey’s and that’s how we also got to try Lemon. (Lucky us ;)) I’d definitely like to try more of their baked cheesecakes though which I think I will love. One advice- If you’re having a cheesecake, warm it for 10 seconds and feel the love. Cold doesn’t taste as good.

Where? Love and Cheesecake is located in Khar, Linking Road (main road), right next to the Guess showroom and a nail spa, Kusum Kunj building. It’s not a cafe where you can sit and enjoy your dessert. You either have to parcel it and eat at home, ask them to deliver or buy and eat in the building premises. We had no option but to stand and eat in the building premises as we weren’t prepared to enter a kitchen straight up as we entered the red door of Love and Cheesecake.

Prices– Now the quality of the cheesecakes is top notch no doubt and so are the prices. We were all planning to have a cheesecake each until we heard the price of the baked cheesecake. That is when we decided to share. The baked cheesecake slice was for Rs. 180 and so was the Lemon (which we got free). The Bailey’s one was for Rs. 250. So yes, they are quite expensive and I do hope they get their prices down and make it more affordable for us dessert junkies.

Verdict– Better pricing, a biscuit base instead of sponge cake and some sort of seating arrangement for at least about 4 people can make Love and Cheesecake one of the best places for cheesecakes in Mumbai. I recommend their New York style Baked cheesecake and I want to try more of their cheesecakes super soon!

Son of Sardaar- Movie Review

Roochster

Whistles, claps, hooting, cheering is what you get when you go for a no-brainer movie for the masses like Son of Sardaar and that is exactly the response I got from a housefull theatre for a 12 noon show on Diwali!

Ajay Devgn goes back from London to India to sell his ancestral land. Little does he know that there are people waiting there for him to take badla because his father had killed the head of their family. And of course, this is supposed to be an action comedy so you’re supposed to find this funny.

So, yeah the story isn’t something I’ll dwell on. You can expect it to be stupid. The screenplay is weak and the dialogues are repetitive. There are some funny action scenes which will make you laugh and that’s about it. Ajay Devgn doesn’t look or act like a sardar.

Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla are the best in the film. They’re very entertaining! I’d like to specially mention Mukul Dev for his performance in this one action sequence at the start when he’s following Ajay Devgn. Vindu Dara Singh is also pretty funny. The son of sardaar- Ajay Devgn I think can do superb action scenes with his intensity and also comedy with a straight face but sadly this movie cannot be counted in the category of awesome movies like Singham and the Golmaal series and so his performance is just about ordinary. I really liked Sonakshi Sinha in the movie. She not only looks good but carries off the role with such ease and energy that it’s fun to watch her act.

The music in the movie is as stupid as the movie itself. The song po-po starring Salman Khan might be a hit only because of Salman Khan and the dumb mouth step. What’s with choreographers these days, anyway? Even the ‘Rani tu main Raja’ song has a stupid step with one hand on the head.

Son of Sardaar is definitely not a superhit entertainer. Very ok and that too only if you’re the masala film type.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan- Movie Review

Roochster

Yash Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, romance, the song ‘Saans’, Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif. So many reasons to watch Jab Tak Hai Jaan! Here’s what I thought of it.

So, Shahrukh Khan plays Major Samar who diffuses bombs for the Indian army. He meets Akira (Anushka Sharma), a journalist who falls in love with him but discovers something about his past which has made him the man he is today. His past has Meera (Katrina Kaif) who is engaged to someone else but loves Shahrukh Khan. Then a couple of accidents (literally) change things a bit. Will not say more.

If you’ve seen Yash Chopra’s movies in the past you’ll know what his love stories are all about. There’s a lot of depth and warmth in each character in the story, there’s amazing music (always) and beautiful visuals. I found most of that missing in his last movie! There’s nothing great about the story and the screenplay is just too weak which could have been saved with better editing. The visuals are beautiful ok- Ladakh and London mainly and of course our gorgeous heroines in them with all the lovely styling, clothes, make-up and hair. The thing is that they’ve tried to make it as ‘today’ as possible, so much so that Shahrukh Khan probably has kissing scenes for the first time ever but the ‘YC’ (Yash Chopra) factor is somehow missing. The first half was extremely slow and boring. I would have really liked the film if it was just the second half.

Coming to the performances… Shahrukh Khan knows all the passionate love wala looks by heart now and he does  them well even with the new heroines even if they lack chemistry or look like his daughters. Luckily, he didn’t overact this time. I like his rugged man look when he’s in the army. Otherwise he looks like a wanna-be with gel in his hair trying to look young. The dance sequence with Katrina in ‘Ishq Shava’ doesn’t suit him at all! Katrina Kaif has done a decent job and you can’t take your eyes off her when she’s on screen. Anushka Sharma I love! I think she’s a natural actor, looks great and she was perfect for the role with all that energy and that contagious smile.

AR Rahman is losing the magical touch he has with music. You wont believe ‘Challa’ by Rabbi is his composition. It’s so bad! I love the song ‘Saans’ though sung by my favourite female singer- Shreya Ghoshal. Ishq Shava and Heer are both nice. Jiya re is fun only while watching the movie.

So, I feel bad but I expected much more from Yash Chopra’s last movie which was not that bad but could have been so much better! This is probably Shahrukh Khan’s low phase but I do hope he bounces back with a better film soon.

Chasing Mavericks- Movie Review

Roochster

Bland and boring screenplay, acting and direction (except for some fantastic surf scenes towards the end) sort of spoil what could have been an interesting and inspirational film.

1920 Evil Returns- Movie Review

A movie with a weak script and out of work actors based in the 1920s where the pretty ghost with red eyes vomits on people instead of scaring them.

Skyfall- Movie Review

Roochster

When a Bollywood film hero dies and comes to life again we say, “That’s utter crap!” When it happens in Hollywood, it’s got to be James Bond and it’s miraculously awesome! Here’s what I thought of Skyfall.

So it starts off with Daniel Craig chasing this guy all around only to get shot by his own team and so it seems like he’s dead. But how can James Bond die, right? So he comes to life again to find the person whose run away with confidential information about terrorists organisations from a murdered MI6 agent. Now that leads him to the guy who was an agent for M but was imprisoned by the Chinese and so he turns a villain and wants to punish M and kill her. You think that can happen with Bond around?

So, I didn’t quite understand the story much because I probably was more engrossed watching the chase and action sequences which are superb, just by the way and hence read that bit up on Wikipedia. Sam Mendes, the director and the cinematographer have created a visually brilliant film. The pace is really good except for in the second half when you’ll feel that the movie is a bit of a drag and it could have been edited better.

I had last seen Pierce Brosnan as Bond and thought he was the best there could ever be but Daniel Craig is very very good and has something about him that convinces you that he is indeed Bond, James Bond. Javier Bardem also is a great villain and Judi Dench as M is old but plays an important role very well. The performances coupled with the thrills and background music make Skyfall quite the entertainer and a must watch, especially for all the James Bond fans.

Cloud Atlas- Movie Review

Roochster

Superb make up, styling, production design and characters but I felt like an idiot sitting for  2 hrs 40 mins in utmost confusion and thinking now there’ll be something breathtakingly shocking and only landed up disappointed because I already knew it was all ‘connected’ and hence the entire movie to me was pointless.

The Pantry, Kala Ghoda- Review

Roochster

Sometimes you walk into a place and can’t help but fall in love with the ambience. There are many such. The Pantry is one of them. Here’s my review.

Food– The Pantry is mainly a breakfast cafe or one for the ‘High Tea’ kind of people. You get sandwiches, quiches, savouries, salads, mains, hot & cold drinks, breakfast specials and desserts. Now here’s an unusual concept. I was quite thirsty and so asked for regular water but we were rather surprised to see a jar with water and a slice of cucumber inside which they said was to add slight flavour to the water. I didn’t like the flavour of cucumber in my water, thank you. Make sure you ask them for water without cucumber in it if you like your water as it is.

The food options certainly are not like the typical cafe you’d have been to. I called for their ‘Flourless 70% cocoa chocolate cake’ as I had just had lunch. I thought it was delicious but would’ve tasted better had it been warmed slightly. My friend tried the Banana bread because she likes bananas. She thought it was nice. I thought it was alright ‘cause the concept of banana and bread doesn’t quite click for me.  She also tried the Ginger Lemon Iced Tea and really liked it. We decided to call for their ‘Fresh Meltdown sandwich’ (among the only 2 options in Veg sandwiches) which had Gorgonzola cheese and apple in multigrain bread. I swear it was just 2 slices of bread with cheese and apple slices and 2 dips/sauces on the side (mustard and tomato salsa). Interesting and also tasted good but not entirely satisfying in terms of quantity. The thing is that they’ve got their dishes right in terms of taste, presentation, quality and selection which makes them different from other cafes but the quantity is so little you’ll have to call for atleast 3-4 things to be full and that in turn might burn a hole in your pocket.

Ambience– Beautiful, vintage, charming, white, lovely. I loved it the moment I saw it from the outside and you will too. It sure is simple looking but is still very classy and chic with a high ceiling, fresh flowers, half blinds like the old times, bathroom tiles on one of their walls and a happy, positive aura overall. It is located in a very “officey” area at Kala Ghoda close to Rhythm House and Fab India. A lot of aunties and old uncles will love the place and will also relate to the music they play here.

Service– They’re warm, pretty aware of whatever little’s available on the menu and don’t take too long to get what we’ve called for. Even the watchman outside politely said, “Good evening” when we were leaving.

Prices– Ok so here’s the deal. If you’re willing to pay the price for a lovely ambience it’s all cool. If not, you’d be staring at the quantity you get for the price you pay no matter how nice the food tastes. The sandwich cost us Rs. 225. The Ginger Lemon Iced was for Rs. 95, the flourless cake was for Rs. 145 and the banana bread was for Rs. 55. So we ended up paying Rs. 281 (with 8% service charge) per head for barely a snack.

Verdict– The Pantry is a classy cafe that can boast of good food but that comes at a price which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It’s certainly not your regular cafe to go to but once in a while if you’re feeling rich and ok with spending a little more, go and live it up at The Pantry.

Ted- Movie Review

Roochster

Entertaining and crudely witty with fun performances by Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and a teddy (Seth MacFarlane) that looks and seems so believable and a story that might feel slightly long but yet well spun, Ted is refreshingly nice.
