Desi Boyz- Movie Review

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from this movie, especially ‘cause it’s called ‘Desi BOYZ’ and plus, you know, movies these days aren’t really that great. So… yeah getting to my review…

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham get laid off because of recession and must find a job to meet their expenses which include the rent of their apartment, Akshay’s adopted son’s daily kharcha and school fees, and the fact that John wants to marry Deepika Padukone and keep her happy. So, they become male escorts for Sanjay Dutt’s company- Desi Boyz and decide not to tell anyone. That doesn’t remain a secret and everything changes.

Ok now, as I said earlier, I wasn’t expecting much from this movie because it looked really stupid. But looks can be deceptive. The story is ok but the screenplay is very good along with the dialogues which make it an out and out entertainer. I just felt that more importance is given to the before -after aspects of becoming desi boyz and their role as desi boyz is limited to barely 1-2 scenes and a song. But as a director, Rohit Dhawan has done a good job.

The good thing is that both Akshay and John are given equal importance in the film. Akshay and John are a great team together and it shows on screen. They’ve both acted pretty well. Deepika Padukone looks pretty but her acting is ok as usual, Chitrangda Singh looks hot even with an overly-caked-up face and manages to do her part well. Omi Vaidya has a short role but is too funny and his comic timing is just perfect! Sanjay Dutt was decent and got the maximum number of seetis and taalis from the audience.

The songs are ok to listen to, not bad. I like the song ‘Tu mera hero’. It was a treat to watch Akshay and John and see the amazing clothes Deepika and Chitrangda are wearing. Also, the sets are designed beautifully.

Desi Boyz is a good entertainer and I can so imagine a sequel to this. Go watch it!

Breaking Dawn -Part 1 (The Twilight Saga)- Movie Review

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson continue being slow and dead in their acting making you wonder if Twilight really deserved 2 parts of the last book like Harry Potter and even though the make-up and graphics are pretty good the movie is not that exciting!

Nawabs, Colaba- Review

I was waiting eagerly to try this new restaurant that’s opened very close to my place and we finally tried the food last night.

Food– Nawabs, The Taste of Awadh is meant for non-vegetarians because there are barely 5-6 dishes for vegetarians out of which one is Biryani! Here’s what we called for: Mix veg (a mix of onions and a few other vegetables without any gravy, very ok), Zafrani Paneer (creamish gravy with so much coconut I felt like throwing up after the first bite!), Veg Biryani (spicy and decent tasting), Roomali Rotis (roomal-less, only plain chapati which wasn’t even soft), Ulta tawa ka parathas (the man on the phone said ‘it’s our speciality’, but it was hard and had nothing to boast about!) I had also tried their Firni before and that too, was disappointing. So yeah, almost everything we had from Nawabs sucked!

Service– We decided to call for the food at home rather than go to the restaurant as it’s a small place and it was a Sunday and guess what? There too, we were extremely disappointed. Considering we stay barely 10 steps away from the place, we should have got the food in half n hour max? OK theek hai, Sunday, lots of deliveries, etc. so throw in 15 minutes more… But no, they took one and a half hours to get the food! Absolutely ridiculous isn’t it?! Agar time lagne wala hai toh pehle se bolo na? Obviously then, I’d give the place a zero for their service!

Prices– The prices are fine. Rs. 100 for the biryani, Rs. 120 for the Zafrani Paneer, Rs. 70 for the mix veg, Rs. 30 for a Roomali Roti (Chapati), Rs. 60 for a crappy ulta tawa ka paratha. Non-veg would be a little more obviously but I think you’d spend a maximum of Rs. 200 per person if you ate non-veg. Our bill total was only Rs. 400.

Verdict– Sorry but this place will shut down very soon. There aren’t too many positive things to say about this new restaurant and when the main thing- the food is so bad, there’s not much to keep the place alive. So, save yourself the trouble!

Shakal Pe Mat Ja- Movie Review

The perfect example of ‘Do not judge a book by its cover’ as it’s a wanna-be Delhi Belly, wanna-be Tere Bin Laden, etc. but it just falls flat on its face with really bad acting, really bad direction and almost everything else because of which my friend didn’t stop cursing me throughout the movie which says enough about it being a bad idea to go watch it!

Rockstar- Movie Review

My expectations from Rockstar were pretty high, considering there’s Ranbir Kapoor as factor 1 and Imtiaz Ali as factor 2. So, this was bound to be a hit, right? Well, read further and find out!

Ranbir Kapoor has one dream- to be a rockstar. But when he becomes one, he realizes there’s a lot more than just the fame and money. There’s loneliness, pain and an emptiness inside which can only be filled by true love.

The story is as obvious as it gets and still it’s somehow not how it should be. Rockstar could have been a hard-hitting film with a super performer as the lead actor but the story focuses too much on the confusing love story between Ranbir and Nargis. I like the way it’s all been edited though and the locations are pretty awesome!

What I love about Ranbir Kapoor is that he gets into the skin of his character and does it really well. In the beginning, he plays Janardhan, a young aspiring singer trying his luck everywhere and doing everything he’s told. He’s innocently adorable. After the transformation, he becomes Jordan, a passionate lover who’s angry almost all the time and sometimes seems to have a mental problem. Nargis Fakhri is another Katrina Kaif. By this I mean that she looks very pretty but can’t act. I wish her well though.

The music by A.R. Rahman is just not how it used to be and for me that is a major let down, especially for a movie like Rockstar where music is of utmost importance. I like Katiyan Karoon and Tum Ho; Sadda Haq is amazing in the movie but I don’t think I’d really download or go buy the music of Rockstar because I wouldn’t see myself listening to the songs otherwise. I’d really expected a lot more from the man who’s made awesome music in the past.

So, Rockstar is really disappointing as a movie even though Ranbir Kapoor’s done full justice to his role.

TUK, Bandra (w)- Review

The Urban Kitchen (TUK) has a baseline that reads- ‘It’s tuking awesome!’ Is it really?

Food– The cuisine comprises of mainly Italian and Indian vegetarian food but you do get a lot of other things. For example, you’ll find Pav Bhaji and Chhole Bature on the menu too.  We called for a Focaccia Sandwich which had marinated mushrooms, balsamic onion, olives and jalapeno. I don’t eat mushrooms or olives but my friends had it and they loved it. Then we had the Jalapeno cheese fritters served with a dip. Both were awesome! The Pita bread with hummus was a little bland for my taste though. Then we called for pizzas- The Quattro Formaggio (combination of 4 cheeses on the pizza.) was lip smacking good and super yummy! The last thing we had was Spaghetti Alio Olio Peprencino which was spicy and had the right flavours to make it awesome! So they’ve got the food right for sure and I’d one hundred percent come back to try some more food!

Ambience– TUK is located at Bandra West, in the National College lane and pretty easy to find. It’s nicely lit with a contemporary look and comfortable seating. There’s an outside as well as inside section.

Service– Good efficient service and your food wont take too long to come which is a good thing. The manager makes sure you have a good time.

Prices– The prices are normal. The Focaccia sandwich is for Rs. 125, a basic pizza would cost you Rs. 175 and then toppings, etc. The Hummus and Pita bread is for Rs. 115, the Spaghetti is for Rs. 195 and so on. So we paid about Rs. 230 per head which is not bad at all and worth the food you eat there!

Verdict– TUK is a great restaurant and they’ve got great chefs! There aren’t too many places that serve such good food for your money’s worth. I recommend! And yes, it is TUKing awesome! 🙂

Had the potential to be an incredibly good movie but it’s a little slow and you wont feel the connection with Winter like you did with Willy (Free Willy).

Poncho, Kurla (w) – Review

Poncho wasn’t listed anywhere online and I was really excited to try the food after being contacted by one of the owners to come, try the food and give feedback. I was wondering when I would go all the way to BKC but luckily a friend had her car and 4 of us foodie friends went there finally. I’m so glad I did!

Food & Prices– Poncho is a Mexican & Italian café/ restaurant and has food that will remind you of home food which tastes good and is superbly priced! The menu has so many tempting things that you may want to try everything. We sure did! Serious! You wont find this kind of food at such reasonable prices anywhere for sure! I’ll tell you exactly what all we had!

1)      Nachos with beans (Rs. 35) – Beans were more like Rajma beans and the cheese was simple melted cheese served on tortilla chips. The cheese was less but overall taste good.

2)      Burrito bowl with paneer & extra cheese (Rs. 75) – An awesome combo of so many things. Tasted nice.

3)      Soft Tacos (Rs. 35) – Fun fillings made it fun to eat!

4)      Margherita pizza with paneer & corn (Rs.90) – Yum!

5)      Misto pasta (Rs. 60) – Very good!

6)      Spicy Cheese Garlic Bread (Rs. 35) – Avoidable

7)      Quesadilla (Rs. 50) – It just had capsicum, cheese and onion but it was super tasty…almost perfect!

8)      Iced Tea (Rs. 20 each) – Strawberry, Lemon, Peach, Ginger Lemon, Black Currant. You name it; we tried it and loved them all!

9)      Lemonade (Rs. 15)– Good

10)   Cold Coffee (Rs. 35) – Just the way I like it!

11)   Oreo Chocolate Mousse (Rs. 45)– Good

12)   Dutch Truffle pastry (Rs. 45)- Could have been good but tasted stale

After having all this and filling our stomachs to the brim, we paid; wait for it, only Rs. 175 per head! Now isn’t that awesome?! I don’t know of many places where you can eat like a hog, try almost everything from the menu and pay less than 200 bucks! But but but, these prices are limited to this outlet only and if they do open another one, which I’m sure they will, the prices will not be the same so I suggest, go dig in at this place asap!

Ambience & Service– Perhaps the only drawback of this place would be the location. They’re located at the end of BKC, near Kurla (w) station at LBS Marg in an office building (Essar House). The restaurant is a simple, basic contemporary self service place with chic furniture. The waiter is sweet even though he’ll reply with a polite ‘yes’ to most of the questions asked to him whether or not he knows what you’re asking him. You’ll get your food within 5-10 minutes so don’t worry if you’re in a rush.

Verdict– Poncho is awesome! Total value for money for simple and good food! I recommend!
