Band Baaja Baaraat- Movie Review

Roochster

You’re probably wondering why I went for a movie which has a star cast without stars. Well, I went for it because it’s a Yash Raj film. Simple. Anything romantic, colourful and filmy attracts my attention and so I went for Band Baaja Baaraat (BBB) alone! Yes! Alone because most of my friends would just make a face at the mention of the film’s name or actors in it.

So yes, BBB is full of shaadis. How Shruti (Anushka Sharma) and Bittoo (Ranveer Singh) want to be the best wedding planners in Delhi and so start a Wedding Planning company called ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ . Their rule is that “Agar karna hai vyapaar, toh na karo pyaar” or something like that. They love working together and depend on each other to make all the weddings successful. BUT one night they get drunk and sleep together and before she knows it, Shruti’s in love with Bittoo. Uh Oh!

Yeah yeah, pata hai predictable hai lekin sadela film nahin hai. Like I said earlier, I love Yash Raj films and the dhinchakness is just awesome! The sets look beautiful and vibrant and so do Anushka’s costumes. It makes you wish that your wedding would look as beautiful as their sets.

Amar Singh’s son Ranveer Singh is not bad for his first film but I’d rather watch him as a side actor. Anushka Sharma looks gorgeous in the film. I also think she’s a great actress, very natural. So that way the director’s done his job pretty well, especially cause he wasn’t working with “stars”. The dialogues in some scenes were good but otherwise could have been better. Also, I think the music could have been way better… I just liked one song-Ainvayi Ainvayi. The background score was good though.

So overall, BBB is not mahaan but it’s not bad either. I liked it because it’s entertaining. Time pass movie.

Phas Gaye Re Obama- Movie Review

Roochster

I had to take a pick between watching Deepika Padukone act and a movie I wasn’t expecting much from. I chose the latter and so, I went for Phas gaye re Obama.

Rajat Kapoor plays a NRI in New York who is struck by recession and hence comes to India to sell his ancestral property in some village. He comes across crazy gundas with a hierarchy obviously leading to a politician. The movie is basically about how he gets out of the mess and returns home to his family.

So… The first half was kinda boring. The story is good and interesting but the dialogues and direction lack big time! There might be some dialogues that were really funny because there were these 2 mad guys sitting next to me who laughed at everything but in general, the entertainment quotient was a little less. The second half was still better. They’ve tried to make the setting look very real but it seems a little pointless because the dialogues and big city- accent don’t match the setting.

As an actor I’ve always thought Rajat Kapoor is slightly dull and a little too subtle in his acting. He to me, just didn’t suit the role. Neha Dhupia who plays the role of a gundi tried really hard but unfortunately she didn’t sound or look like one! Amol Gupte, Manu Rishi and Sanjay Mishra were really good. They delivered what they were meant to.  Luckily there were no songs in the movie!

Overall, the movie is ok and can be watched at home. No need to go to the theatre.

Break Ke Baad- Movie Review

Roochster

I know you’re expecting a bad review…and a bad review is what you’re gonna get.

Story- Boy and girl who are chaddi buddies fall in love. Girl has big dreams of being an actress and boy has only one dream- to be with girl (loser). So girl goes to Australia to fulfill her ambition and decides for the both of them that a break is what they need from their relationship. Boy is upset and misses girl. Girl is selfishly doing her own thing in Australia and then calls off their relationship completely. Boy comes to Australia to make things right and sets up a catering business. Finally he has a dream! Girl is still being a stubborn bitch but realizes she’s taking her loved ones for granted so she gets back to boy. Yeah I just told u the whole story! Hawww! Thank me! I’ll be saving you a trip to the theatre!

So why is it not worth watching? Ummm Deepika and Imran are reason enough. Ok also the screenplay. The first half is bullshit! You’ll feel extremely disconnected throughout! I know its supposed to be a simple story like Jab We Met but the screenplay needs to work too, especially if you have actors like Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan! Imran Khan in fact was not that bad. Deepika I feel cannot have good chemistry with anyone…not even her real boyfriend on screen!

It has been shot very well and a lot of money has gone into set design and art direction but what’s the use? The movie just doesn’t work. I think the supporting cast has acted better than the main cast. The songs aren’t great either except for maybe ‘Adhoore’ which is not bad.

Below average movie. One of those you can watch at home if you’re really bored.

Guzaarish- Movie Review

Roochster

Two magical movies released together. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and Guzaarish. No points for guessing which one I wanted to watch more eagerly! If you thought Guzaarish, you suck!

The movie is about a paraplegic ex- magician (Hrithik Roshan) who’s been paralysed since 14 years. He has a nurse (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) who takes care of him.  As his health deteriorates, he files a petition in court (aakhri Guzaarish) to be mercy-killed (Euthanasia).

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has created magic… in his sets. Sorry, but the movie is just not that good. I had great expectations and I’m sure many others did, but Guzaarish was slow and dull. I know the genre is drama but it doesn’t need to drag so much! It went at the pace of 20km/hr or something! I expected more magic but was only left to watch drama and more drama!

The Art Direction is superb! It’ll definitely an inspiration to all those doing Interior Designing and art direction. The colours, designs, props and everything used just makes the film look so rich! Even the cinematography… though simply shot, it looks beautiful! The choreography of whatever little dance and magic sequences were there is also brilliant! The music, which is attempted by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself, is not something I’d listen to otherwise, but it goes very well with the movie theme. So yes, technically, the movie was 1st class!

Coming to the other things… Hrithik’s acting was just ok. I think anyone could have done his part. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan reminded me of Rekha… the way she looked and even her acting. I’m not saying she was bad… she was ok! Aditya Roy Kapoor, who plays Hrithik’s student had a tiny role that needn’t have been there at all. That angle in the movie just seemed pointless to me. He’s a decent actor though.

Guzaarish is just ok.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 1) – Movie Review

Roochster

The beginning of the end is here and I don’t know whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing. What pissed me off a few months back was when they announced that the last Harry Potter book would be split into two as movies. Back then I thought this was so not fair, especially because we have to wait for another 8 months for part 2 of the final Harry Potter book in a movie form. But then I really though… Harry Potter is not about just a book or movie… there’s a connection… something you just don’t want to let go off and that’s how I felt after watching part 1 of Deathly Hallows. After part 2 in July, there’ll be no more Harry Potter. 🙁

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part 1) is about how Lord Voldemort is out to kill Harry Potter before Harry finds all his 7 horcruxes that Dumbledore instructed him to destroy. That’s the only way Lord Voldemort would be finished. So Harry, Hermione and Ron go in hiding and try solving the mysteries of the missing horcruxes and a lot more.

Let me tell you that visually this movie is a treat to watch. Graphically its better than all the other Harry Potter movies.  Ok it did get slightly slow in parts but otherwise I was totally hooked on and didn’t budge from my seat! It was thrilling in parts and otherwise was a great adventure. Everyone’s acted really well and Daniel Radcliffe looked cute…He’s the shortest among the three.  Haha

Overall, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is awesome and I’m watching it again today! Wooohooo! I recommend you watch it too!

The Social Network- Movie Review

Roochster

The much awaited movie about the genius creator of Facebook finally made it to the Indian screens today and I was super excited to go watch it!

The Social Network, directed by David Fincher is about Mark Zuckerberg, a computer geek who created Facebook; how he made billions but lost a handful of great friends.

I’m sorry but I thought the film was not brilliant and neither was it “a must watch”! OK the story is very inspiring and interesting in its own way and I even came back home and mailed Mark Zuckerberg about how I think he’s a genius and awesome but as a movie there was no wow factor. In simple words, the story could have been told more effectively. I understand the genre is drama but there was something missing. That’s what I thought anyway.

Actingwise, Jesse Eisenberg was good except in the beginning for about 5 minutes; I barely understood a few words because he spoke really fast. Ok that’s my problem. And Justin Timberlake isn’t a bad actor, as I had wrongly assumed. Just saying.

Anyway, so as I was saying, the movie’s story is great and I have no problem with that even though Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t exactly shown positively. I just wish it was more gripping and that it would make me go “Wow!”

I know a lot of people who’ve seen it have really loved it but I thought it was just good.
