Godzilla (2014) – Movie Review

Roochster

godzilla-2014-posterApart from King Kong there weren’t too any monster movies I had seen back in ’98 so Godzilla was going to be a thrilling experience. I can’t tell you how excited I was to watch Godzilla again, after more than 15 years and see a bigger, better and scarier Godzilla! I actually went and bought tickets in advance! Well, I was in for a surprise. Well, not a good one. Here’s why.

Plot in short– The world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.

The Good– I thought it was interesting to have massive insect-like creatures created from radiation. The idea is great. Also, there’s a long build up to the main action that starts at two points- one when the creatures come alive and when Godzilla saves America from them. The graphics are great. Even the actors look really serious and committed to their roles. They’re natural and drag the movie as far as they can because Godzilla is MIA almost throughout. So kudos to them.

The Not-so-good– The film is called ‘Godzilla’ right? Well, he doesn’t make an appearance then for the entire first half of the film and is present collectively for not more than fifteen minutes. Ok, so those other beasts are scary too but hey, why call the film Godzilla then? I wanted to watch him more than the actors and the other beasts for sure! There’s too much attention given to the family life of Aaron Taylor- Johnson for reasons that could have been avoided altogether. So yes, I wish Godzilla had a longer and more important part. The first half is a drag and also slightly boring.

Verdict– Godzilla 2014 was a big let down and I really didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I wish to see a more thrilling, scary and better directed Godzilla the next time it’s made.

Rating– 2.5/5
