B.A. Pass- Movie Review

B.A. Pass-posterIf you’ve seen the trailer of B.A. Pass, you would know that ‘sex’ is an integral part of the film. No wonder the theatre was full of men! But the film is powerful enough to hold high without the ‘sex’ aspect which is definitely a crowd puller. Here’s my review of the critically acclaimed B.A. Pass that’s won awards and accolades from the world over.

Mukesh (Shadab Kamal) stays at his aunt’s place in Delhi after his parents pass away. Being brought up with great etiquettes and manners, he respectfully does what his aunt says even if it means doing household chores, making tea and serving food when guests come home, etc.  He has two sisters who stay far away whom he needs to look after but can’t because he doesn’t make money. When he meets his aunt’s friend Sarika (Shilpa Shukla), everything changes. For the worse.

Director Ajay Bahl has adapted the story ‘The Railway Aunty’ written by Mohan Sikka from the book ‘Delhi Noir’ and what a fine job he’s done to make his debut film B.A. Pass! With such a sensitive story, he’s made a brilliant film. You will be hooked on right from the beginning till the end. Very well written screenplay by Ritesh Shah as well. The cinematography by Ajay Bahl himself is top notch. Great art direction. Delhi looks vibrant and real. The styling is well done. None of the actors look too dressy or wear make up that doesn’t go with the setting of the film. Shilpa Shukla is styled very well.

It’s a good thing there isn’t any music in the film becuase then it would lose momentum.

The performances are all A grade. Shilpa Shukla who’s always done interesting films where her character plays a major role, does it again in B.A. Pass. She’s a natural actor who gets into the skin of her character and does not shy away or think of her “image” when doing roles like these. Shadab Kamal who plays a young innocent boy is outstanding! He’s likable and effortlessly plays the character. Rajesh Sharma who plays Shilpa Shukla’s husband is a great actor and convincingly plays his part too. Dibyendu Bhattacharya who plays Shadab’s Chess mate is good.

B.A. Pass as a film scores and has a lot to offer in terms of content, entertainment and value. Brilliantly executed, this movie cannot be missed! I recommend you go watch it soon but not with family and certainly not with children!
