Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani- Movie Review

Roochster

Yeh Jawaani hai deewani posterI was so excited to watch Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and had great expectations from it as a film. But you know what? It went way above my expectations! This is one of those love stories you wont mind watching over and over again. Here’s why.

Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor), Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) are best friends who live life to the fullest without a care in the world. They love travelling and decide to go to Manali to explore, trek and have a good time. Naina (Deepika Padukone) who’s been a geek all her life decides to get out of her mould and do something she’s never done before. She finds about this Manali trip and decides to go too. During this trip she makes new friends, discovers new things about herself and also falls in love with Bunny. But things are about to change as Bunny wants to travel the world and would soon be going to Chicago to do a course in Journalism. Eight years hence, at Aditi’s wedding, they meet again. This time, everything has changed.

It’s been so long since we’ve seen a very good romantic comedy. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani deserves to and will do very well at the box office and otherwise! Even though it’s nothing but a simple love story, the screenplay is so well written and the story is so well told, that you will enjoy every minute of it. Director Ayan Mukherjee knows how to connect with his audience and he does it very well. With a very good script he manages to tell a story with subtlety and charm. The movie might seem a little long, especially towards the end but you wont mind it that much because you wont find yourself getting bored at any point. Cinematographer V. Maniknandan has captured the beauty of Manali beautifully and adds colour and richness to every frame. I’d say the Deepika Padukone’s styling could have been better considering they’ve made her wear short skirts and dresses in Manali where it snows. Also, wearing a piece of cloth with a ghagra and dupatta for a wedding function in India is a bit too much… or should I say too little?

The casting is bang on! I love how easy going and real the characters are. They all make a difference to the story and have an important part to play. There’s this unsaid chemistry between all the actors, especially Ranbir, Deepika, Aditya and Kalki which reflects in their performances. Ranbir Kapoor is filled with passion and has this magnetic pull that attracts you towards him. He’s pure magic on screen and plays his part with full sincerity. Deepika Padukone is only getting better as an actress. She’s convincing as Naina and has acted well. Aditya Roy Kapur is a good actor but I wish he had more depth to his character than just someone who’s messing around with his life. Kalki Koechlin I have always liked and in this film too she’s very good. The energy she brings to the film is good with her fun and bindaas character. Kunaal Roy Kapur’s role is not any different from what he’s done in the past and he already knows he’s entertaining. Evelyn Sharma as the delicate darling is fun to watch. Tanvi Azmi and Farooq Shaikh are very good.

The music by Pritam is foot tapping. Songs like ‘Badtameez Dil’, ‘Balam Pichkari’ and ‘Dilliwali girlfriend’ stand out. Madhuri Dixit in ‘Ghagra’ seemed a bit out of place and didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the movie but as a song its alright.

I can’t tell you how much I loved Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. I can watch it many more times and still love it! Ranbir and Deepika make a superhit jodi together and Ayan Mukherjee is a fantastic director!  You just cannot miss this movie. You will love it!

MUST WATCH!
